It's not any one thing it's a package deal. I think the creators wanted to make his non He Man form as feminine as possible to make his He Man form seem more manly. That's the only way I can explain this-

If you can't wrap your mind around it, take my previous post and substitute the word "neon" for "pastels" or even "garish color schemes". It was all very much prevalent in the time period.

It seems to me that the early 'Breakdance' Rappers had little or no choice when it came to what they wore or their props; for that matter I imagine not much has changed but the David Bowie shirt is extremely out of place in any event.

No, no, no!
If you want to see GARISH you must look to the 70's = in my opinion, the ugliest decade for color, ever.
It's like they went out of their way to pick colors and patterns that didn't go together.
Design - wise there was some interesting stuff but those colors were downright hideous - cars and buildings suffered the same fate.

I'm old enough to remember the 80s. When I was a kid we watched He Man all the time. To be perfectly blunt I remember thinking Prince Adam looked gay, which is what I think they were going for with the contrast. No one would suspect effeminate Adam would be uber manly He Man.
No offense to gay people, I was really little and mocking gays was pretty normal back then.
