Nintendo Wii (Revisited)

Nintendo Wii Article
Quote:
Aided by a shortfall of PlayStation 3 consoles in the critical U.S. market, Nintendo has sold 1.1 million units of the Wii since the product's launch date in November, versus 687,000 PS3s during roughly the same period.

Unlike Sony and Microsoft, which spent lavishly on blisteringly fast chips, graphics and cutting-edge disk technology, Iwata insisted Nintendo designers use energy-saving chips and a standard optical disk player to lower product costs. That enabled Nintendo to set the Wii's retail price around $250, several hundred dollars less than the Xbox 360 and PS3.
I just hope that game developers follow with some more titles.

I don't plan on getting a Wii because I am a typical lazy gamer, I enjoy sitting back and not having to move whilst playing my video games, so therefore a 360 is perfect for me

You say this like you have to do cartwheels to play games on the "Revolution". A simple flick of the wrist is all it takes for most games that I've played. If you've ever played a computer game using a mouse, that's about as involved as it is when playing a "Revolution" game.

Can you whip the remote about in wreckless abandon? Sure, but it's not going to result in a more effecting means of control than merely flicking your wrist about. Are some games more comfortable to play while standing? Sure, but just about every game can be played in a seated position as well.

You have obviously never played Rayman.

I greatly dislike that game. It hurts.

I have given in. I now have a preorder on a Wii.

Okay, so *I* is a bit misleading. I'm getting one for my birthday. So, my parents are paying for it.

Actually, I get a Wii whenever the next available shipment is. The next shipment is meant to be this Monday, but I'm not sure if I'm getting one from this coming shipment, if you see what I mean. Apparently they get stock weekly.

Why should I shell out $250 to play with Nintendo's Wii when I have a perfectly good and free one to play with at home?

{OOC: I believe that's PG-13}

Alright boys and girls, any continued discussion about Ten's Wii can be done in the Off Topic thread (where I moved some of your posts). Just a warning that the posts I moved were starting to toe the line.

This topic is for the Nintendo Wii. Back on topic I can't wait for the new Tiger Woods Golf for Wii. Supposed to have very realistic use of the Wii remote to mimic a golf swing.

Yeah I wonder how they would handle a baseball game, would it be like Wii sports where you hold buttons to throw different pitches, or could you "throw" the remote different ways for different pitches? Maybe they could come out with a baseball controller? Batting is easy enough, though I'm not sure about fielding, you could use the nunchuck, but then how could you bat with the remote hooked up to the nunchuck? Maybe you could unhook it at the end of the inning? I'd love a game where you have to pitch though.

To me the most confusing thing is what about the diving and wall-climb catches, In MLB 2k6, all you have to do is move the right thumbstick towards the spot where the ball is gona land for a dive catch, for a wall-climb catch you need momentem towards the red arrow and move the right thumbstick up.

I got my Wii today. I just have a question about connecting it to the internet, since I am not very computer literate...since I have a Cable internet connection, does that mean I need the ethernet cable to get my Wii to connect to the internet cable or what?

When I searched for access points wirelessly, one did show up. It could be my neighbour's or something, I guess. The signal's weak.

Apparentlty the ethernet cable thingy isn't out here in Australia yet. I've been hearing about some USB thing, but I'm just generally confused. :whatthe:

Celinta,
Tekka is better about explaining this so he can add in anything I have wrong, but you can get a USB thing and hook it you a computer that runs Windows XP. Then your Wii's wireless internet will connect via the USB thing.

Celinta, in essence, if you have a broadband internet connection, you're already half-way there. All that you need is a wireless router and you'll have everything you need. There are two different ways to do this:

1) Buy a standard PC wireless router like one offered by NetGear or LinkSys. Using this, you can hard-wire your computer to it in one room and get wireless (aka WiFi) internet in the rest of your house. This would allow you to not only connect your Wii, but also your Nintendo DS or any other WiFi-enabled devices (laptops, PDAs, etc.). This method tends to be much less expensive than the next method, but could be slightly more difficult to configure if you're not very computer savvy. However, I found it to be quite simple and I don't know very much about this kind of stuff.

2) Buy the Nintendo WiFi USB Dongle offered by Nintendo. With this device, you simply plug it into an available USB port on your computer and it will enable WiFi access for your Wii and Nintedo DS, but ONLY those two devices. While this method is much easier to set up, the Dongle is a bit more expensive than a standard wireless router.

Of course, not knowing the availability or cost of these types of devices in Australia, I can't give you a proper estimate or promise which of these types of products would be available. Either way, this should give you a clear enough picture of what you need to do to get your system online.

If you have any other questions or concerns, just let us know and we'll help to the best of our abilities. And, of course, once you're online, be sure to let us know your Console Number so that we can send messages and Mii's to each other!

EDIT: Tenser, I just actually read your quote and nearly cracked up in front of a customer. Thanks.
