Are you suggesting that it's doesn't deserve those scores? And I don't know if you've been paying attention, but Mario games have the best legs of any series, bar none. It will sell consistently well for years.

I'm suggesting it's not a surprise that a major Mario game is being reviewed well. That being said the preorder hype is probably bigger than normal because the WiiU is so disappointing so far. People are hoping a new Mario game will turn things around.

I'm pretty sure they're willing to give mario games bad ratings if the raters think they deserve it. Remember Sunshine? I remember 7.0's to 8.5's across the board for those. Nothing super low by any means, but they rate as they see fit... most places. Although personally Sunshine is one of my favourite entries. I remember New Super Mario Bros. 2 getting 7.0 ratings as well simply because there "wasn't enough added". Again, personally one of my favourite 2d entries though, not that, that my opinion has much to do with it.

Anyways, Mario games are just generally of high quality.

Mario Kart 8 will come out and then there will be more hype. And then when that dies down, Smash Bros will come out. This is what Nintendo has been doing for years. They produce 3 or 4 really good sequels of games a year and the masses buy them.

For Christmas, I want 1 PS4 game, 1 WiiU game, 2 Steam games, and 3 3DS games. The 3DS is currently the best gaming console available right now in my opinion. I feel it has the best library and is the easiest of the three to use, it being a handheld.

I've wanted a WiiU for a while. Holding off in favour of the greater need of a new computer. Once that's done, I'll get a wiiU. Many titles appeal to me. Like I said, down the road, probably a Ps4 as well.

WiiU allows you to play games on the GamePad.
PS4 allows you to play games on the Vita.
One allows you to play games on any Windows 8 tablet.
Ouya allows Android and Google Play games on the TV.
Steam Box will allow Steam games on the TV.
Most modern TVs and PCs can be easily hooked together.

I just love the 8 bit nes system it had no one to compete with and everyone had that system. No hate over which system to buy .

Nah me and Santa are tight. Santa gets me everything I want for Christmas but then I can't ask Santa for anything the rest of the year

It could also be stated that the 3DS is the most dedicated gaming device on the major market at the current time. Compared to the Wuu, Vita, PS4, and the supposed One's software infrastructure the 3DS is much more focused as a gaming machine than any of its competition.

In fact, one could argue that the PS4/Vita/One are not dedicated gaming devices but instead social media devices that happen to play games and are therefor closer to PCs and smartphones and have no place in the console war any longer.

I'm not agreeing with this. Maybe it's a matter of perspective and we will always see it different.

1. Um, they are different gaming devices. When I wanted to chose a handheld for my kids to take to school, play in their rooms, take on road trips, etc, was I supposed to consider a 360 or a PS3 when I made this decision? Of course not. They're different products. IMO consoles today are more than just gaming devices and when I make my decision as to which console I want to hook up to my HD TV, I won't be considering a 3DS or any other kind of hand held. They won't do what I want as they are different products.

2. Using this logic, then anything that plays a game should be included. Why just limit it to the 3DS? My son often decides to play his ipod instead of his 3DS or our Wii. Am I ever going to hook up an ipod to my TV? Of course not.

I think the majority of people in the market for a console are like me. We want something to hook up to our TV to be an entertainment device (play Blue Rays, Stream Netflix) and a 3DS is not even a consideration for that function.

Are you sure? The Vita will hook up to your TV nicely. So will a tablet device and a laptop, all of which are not only portable but also very heavy media and social networking devices. The 3DS would also so the same except Nintendo is a bunch of cheap jerks who didn't add an audio/video out to their system.

I think we still need to limit the "console war" debate to "dedicated gaming devices". I mean, lets not be absurd and start including a deck of cards into the mix. That's why I stated previously: "Gaming Console: An electronic device whose main function in to play video games."

That's great and all but this isn't a discussion over which console streams Netflix the best or which one has a better BluRay player. It's a discussion on which next gen gaming device will outsell the others. While I respect your opinion I don't see anything in your response that states that the 3DS does not deserve to be in such a discussion.

What about titles like Oceanhorn and Final Fantasy Dimensions? Neither are casual games, and while they aren't long enough to warrant $40, to me they are indicative that a market for full fledged games is coming to iOS and Android.

It was originally intended for the PS4 ad XBone, and was supposed to focus on that current spotlight, but I am pleased as to what it has evolved into.

It's not a problem and I can understand your confusion since we're basically discussing wordage and semantics.

"Home console vs handheld console vs gaming console vs dedicated gaming device" is just semantic jargon used by talking heads to spin facts in a way that fits their needs at the time.

I am an old fogie and out of touch since I haven't cared about console wars since the 16-bit wars but the idea of calling a game boy a console makes no sense at all to me.

The only thing more stupid is arguing about it. Just change the topic to 8th gen wars, throw in handhelds, PC, Android, Steam OS, Ouji, OnLive, and every other gaming device released between ~2012 & ~2017 and everyone can be happy.

I personally am rooting for the non-consoles to come out on top and would find this topic more interesting if everything was included. Plus we could move away from the semantics debate. Woot!

Technically Genesis/SNES was an epic battle. The SMS/NES battle was just sad. Especially for Sega fanboys like myself. SMS fought the good fight but we lost hard.

Well the thread topic doesn't say Home Console Wars. Though a Vita does plug into the TV so I guess it could be a home console as well...

Anyways, asking who will win the console war if we exclude certain consoles sounds like a pretty stupid topic and would die pretty quickly since no one cares about the 720.

"And if you're the type of person who splits your focus between gaming and sports or keeping up with TV shows, then this is the console you'll want." I realize there are a lot of RUer's who aren't interested in sports and don't have a large family with different TV/Movie watching needs but this is what I'm looking for. I haven't spent the time yet to look for a PS4 review so maybe they have some nice extras as well. The bottom line for me is that if I'm going to spend the money their asking for these new consoles then they damn well better do a lot more than just play games.

I'm buying a PS4 simply for its exclusives, some other console games in general, and the Blu-Ray (it acts as my DVD player). I really enjoy sports but I have a TV for that in my room or in the basement if I need one.

But I definitely understand it varies from person to person. It's what best suites you after all that matters lol.
