And how does that promote any particular religion? It's atmosphere and nothing more. If it didn't have that stuff it would seem weird or shallow.

I think it's safe to assume that all the Castlevanias have religious iconography. Like Tenser said it's part of the gothic horror theme. None of that means it's promoting any religion though. In fact I bet die hard religious people would put these games in the same category as Harry Potter and other pagan, devilish media.

The reason you all may have missed the religious iconography in Castlevania games is that it was heavily censored, even up to Symphony of the Night.
That is why it would seem more prevalent in the 3D ones, they were never censored for it.

I don't even think that's all of it.
When the Megaman Zero Collection was released on the DS, they removed all references to death and blood.
Even the ones left in.

I understand the Mike Tyson's Punch Out censorship a bit, at least to the degree of changing "Vodka Drunkinski" to "Soda Popinski"

They remove religious stuff because the US is known to be backwards about religious stuff. I don't blame them one bit for avoiding the issue all together. The alternative is to have morons flipping out over images/references in a video game, just not worth it. It depresses me to think I live in a country like that but it's true.

You must have been playing the Japanese version then.

In the arcade by my house and on the home cartridge they were replaced by this fuzzy white things.

The first time I saw it with a seal instead was on one of those 190 in 1 pirate cartridges you could buy for the Nintendo back in the day that had the Japanese version on it.
