I personally think mostly all of the girls from the newer Final Fantasy games are pretty stinkin' hot. Tifa, Yuffie, Yuna, Rikku, Paine, Ashe, just to name a few. Why is there nobody in the real world that looks like this? =P

Most games have unrealistic characters because normal people are boring. I think it applies to almost any media, people want to see the flawless, unrealistically proportioned bodies so they can vicariously live through them. I'm not trying to be mean when I say that I just think it's the truth.
Humans enjoy stories, even more so when the characters are interesting.

If the NES and SNES cartridges had the capability to render characters in three dimensions, I imagine more dudes would oggle over Terra and Rydia.

That's where the artist's rendition of the characters on the box comes into play.
The promotional posters that were up in the game stores worked too.

I saw a bunch in Electronics Boutique when I was in there recently.

Actually, in the GameCube and X-box versions you could make the female characters topless, though in the PlayStation 2 version the "naughty" bits were censored.
