the name springfield was chosen because of its ambiguity. about a dozen states in america have towns called springfield with about half being located in the midwest. the universe of the simpsons, it is likely located somewhere in the mid-west based on someone pointing the the location of springfield on a map while the location they pointed to was obstructed by the character covering where they pointed to with their body. the region that was covered was the american mid-west.

geographically, the only springfield in the mid west that has a river running through it is springfield michigan

prior the the simpsons move premier, there was a contest to determine the real springfield with the winning city hosting the premier. the city of springfield vermont was determined the winner.

In my experience, I have heard "Howdy" more In Oklahoma than Texas.
