Don't you see what drunk ninja is doing... He wants to hold the sword and slay the wolves... why would he do that... simple because if he has the sword that can only kill the wolves we the humans can not use it on him. My vote is drunk ninja
I is simple to see why he would defend him. why would he not think it was drunk ninja. simple they may have an alliance together. Who would have an alliance this early in the game. Simple answer... the wolves... mignelli has not said much this whole time and the first thing he says is that its not drunk ninja. He was being noble, noble for what trying to kill everyone else.

I simply said that I was eager to kill these wolves and avenge our fallen comrade, why must you think it is me for wanting to kill these murderers? If you kill me you'll be helping the wolves.
