The game is bad, but I liked using the Wii U Pad in the limited time I played.

That's great, the Wuu sucks. I know, I own a launch unit and have yet to buy a single game for it.
My point remains the same. 3DS is a current gen system and will win this console war. Just as the DS won last generation's console war.
DS - 154 million
Wii - 100 million
PS3 - 80 million
PSP - 80 million
360 - 79 million
I predict this current gen will line up here:
3DS
PS4
One
Wuu
Vita

3DS doesn't count it's a handheld. Of course it's doing great in the handheld market since it has no serious competition. It is not competing with the 3 consoles.

I would think it's competing with mobile operating systems, to some extent. There's also the Vita, but that thing's going to need a serious defibrillator.

Re: Console Wars 2013
How many people have you met with a Vita? I've met 1... Ever. So, yes, agreed it needs something going for it.
I'm not sure you can really say that handhelds aren't a part of the gaming contest. They're gaming devices, just like the ps4/one/wiiu are.
At most, I'd stretch to say handhelds are a subdivision, of the gaming division.

When talking about the console wars it's always the traditional consoles we mention. Seems like the 3DS is being brought up here to make up for how bad Nintendo is doing on the traditional front.

No. We all know the Wii U is doing terrible right now. Nintendo is doing fine though because the 3DS is blowing its competition out the water and sold the most units out of all the "consoles" (gaming devices, whatever you want to call them) last year. Nintendo has to get an increase in Wii U sales though. Even if the Wii U is last behind Xbox One and PS4, the 3DS will be enough to keep it afloat.
Whether it be Xbox, PS4, PC, Wii U, my favorite "console" right now is the 3DS because its library is the one that interests me the most and this will probably stay the same even after the PS4 and Xbox One are released.
In a "console war" between PS, Xbox, and WiiU, my favorite gaming device is my 3DS. Just putting my 5 cents out there.

I agree with DB.
If you were talking about smart phones you wouldn't bring up sales of Windows to make up for failure of MS phones.

Re: Console Wars 2013
it's really a matter of perspective. I find that example, wuite a bit different kong. Computers and phones are different beings, at leas the way I see it. while holding similarities, in most cases are different. Where as a 3ds plays video games, a ps4 plays video games, so on and so on. They are dedicated gaming devices, all of them.
Matter of perspective like I said. You could definitely argue that the gap is closing between phones and computers, but I still think it's a much different being altogether. Where as the gap between handheld games and console games is mere tech specifications, and even with that the gap between a 3ds and a ps4 is smaller than the gap between the gameboy and the ps1. I don't even play the gap as a factor in my perspective though. They're gaming devices playing video games, all of them. Nothing to do with the 3ds backing up the wiiu.
The WiiU sales are the WiiU sales, the 3ds sales, are the 3ds sales. Counting all 5 individually here. Hopefully that clears up what I mean.

Re: Console Wars 2013
I honestly cannot see any gaming correlation between smart phone games (apps) and 3DS/Vita games (actual video games). I've never seen apps as video games, maybe thats me though.

Re: Console Wars 2013
I agree with Tenser and ChrisP. All of the games are systems and based what's on it it still competes with all systems. My favorite system is the 3ds.
Ps I only know 1 person with a vita and that's thechampishere.

Why? What makes Temple Runner or Candy Crush different from "actual video games" other than the platform it runs on?

That may change in the years to come. The first official controller attachment and games like Oceanhorn may not really grant a wholesome "united handheld" feel, but I'd say a strong foothold is now in place.

Re: Console Wars 2013
The point is, people have to change or reword the "console war" so that it's even close.
The 3DS is a handheld console. The PS4 is a home console. They are both dedicated gaming devices and thus consoles. We are not trying to include the 3DS to somehow bolster the Wuu but are instead saying the 3DS competes directly against the Wuu and other consoles.
@Seahawk: They don't have Etrian Odyssey and as such, they're crap.

Re: Console Wars 2013
They are games of course, they are casual games, none of them warrant a 50 dollar price tag. So in that sense, it's kinda apples and oranges.

Oh come on. When people are deciding what console to buy they aren't considering the 3DS they're considering the traditional non mobile ones. Handhelds are consoles in their own right but they are not consoles in the war. They are consoles you get alongside consoles that are in this war. To imply otherwise is just silly.

Your argument is completely invalid.
1. The only ground you have to stand on that they do not directly compete against one another is that you're labeling them as different gaming devices. Its mere use of wordage and holds no weight other than being subjective and opinionated.
2. I state that handheld consoles do have a place in the console war because they compete against home consoles for a gamer's time and more importantly, a gamer's dollars. This is a fact no matter what prism you look at it through.
-----------
It could also be stated that the 3DS is the most dedicated gaming device on the major market at the current time. Compared to the Wuu, Vita, PS4, and the supposed One's software infrastructure the 3DS is much more focused as a gaming machine than any of its competition.
In fact, one could argue that the PS4/Vita/One are not dedicated gaming devices but instead social media devices that happen to play games and are therefor closer to PCs and smartphones and have no place in the console war any longer.

Sure whatever you say Tenser. Suddenly we are counting handhelds in the console wars because you say so even though traditionally they are not. Seems legit.

Re: Console Wars 2013
A game console is defined as: an electronic device for playing video games, usu. requiring connection to a television
Game console | Define Game console at Dictionary.com
Wikipedia says(yes I know wikipedia is not fact)
A video game console is a device that outputs a [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_signal"]video signal[/ame] to display a [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game"]video game[/ame]. The term "video game console" is used to distinguish a machine designed for consumers to use for playing video games on a separate [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Television"]television[/ame] in contrast to [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arcade_machine"]arcade machines[/ame], [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Handheld_game_console"]handheld game consoles[/ame], or [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Home_computer"]home computers[/ame].
So you could argue either way if the 3DS counts.

Re: Console Wars 2013
They offer different experiences, but are all still gaming devices, and do compete for the same dollars. I think I agree with Ten's points, and they should be included. Phones and PC's are different since their primary use is not gaming. You are not going to compare an Ipod, to stereos that come stock on cars right?

Re: Console Wars 2013
When you hear discussions about video game console wars or competition do you hear portables being mentioned in the same breath as the 3 consoles? I know I don't. This really does seem like you guys are trying to move the goal posts to keep Nintendo relevant in the battle.

It's got nothing to do with goal posts, an until today I agreed with you fully. This thread has got me to change my opinion.
Nintendo does not need anybody's help to stay relevant, 3D World is beating all XBone games in preorders:
Amazon.com: Advanced Search: Video Games
It does look freaking amazing, if it's got half the fun of 3D Land it's a must have for me.
