I admit the game is ugly and lame by comparison but at the time it was awesome. Once I got Quest of the Avatar though, it was garbage.

I'm not sure where on the time line of games it fell for me, I just remember how crappy it was. One character dies and to revive them was ten times the gold I could hope to collect.
I just kept restarting games hoping nobody would die.

If you played it after playing newer, better games then yeah it would be very unimpressive. I think I played it around the time when I played FF1 and DW1. It wasn't better than those games really but it had more classes(although most are not really that different from each other) and it felt like it had more free roaming.
