IMO - If you are creating the content i.e. creating a new post then it should be rated PG. I think we all know what that means. If you are not creating the content i.e. a video or a quote then we should be a little more slack and take it on a case by case basis. If the video is good and stretches the PG limit then label it as such and allow it. If it blows away the PG limit or is just not very good then don't allow it.
Leave a warning, other than that, caveat spectator

A few things to consider. I would like to have a joke thread but it is hard to find jokes that are both funny and PG. Also I am planning on adding a robust video section. Keeping it strictly PG may be difficult.

I personally find [beep], @#$%, and frak and other butchering of words to be insulting. To me it is a lose-lose situation. The people that want to use any language they want get their words taken away. The people that want to censor the world still know what is being beeped out. They are not being fooled; they know exactly what you tried to say. It is silly. However it is also what is expected.

2. Hate. IMO - None. A couple examples. There are numerous Super Mario Bros hacks that are racist. These types of things will not be added to game menu ever. This is not up for debate. They are obviously stepping over the line. But in the past there have been forum posts saying things like "Stupid Americans". Should we permit this type of statement or censor it?

IMO as far a hate is concerned "Stupid American" is the same as any other slur. Whether it's used in jest or with hate, you have to expect someone to be offended. I don't know if it should be completely outlawed (as it would make the potential jokes thread impossible) but don't be surprised by any backlash.

3. Avatars. Size? I think the current max size is good. Animated? I think not.
Current size is good. Animated for special circumstances, with permission.

4. Sigs. Animated images? How many images? Max image size? How many lines of text? Font size? Show sig to guests? How many times does each sig show up on each page? Currently each users sig shows up once per page and only if the post has more than 100 characters.

Subtle animated images are ok, but anything too flashy is distracting. As for image size, lines of text, and font size; I think the best way to handle this is to give us each 5-8 lines of text's worth of space to fill how we please - if that's at all possible.

5. How many posts per page. Previously it was 10. Now it is 30.

I prefer a higher number. The more the better. Make it 100/page.

6. Ads. How many and where should they be positioned. I am planning on removing most ads for logged in users.

Leave it as it is.
7. Currently if you submit a bogus score you get 1 infraction point that last 1 month. If you have 5 infraction points then you can not play any games until the points expire.

I've seen a few people get 5+ infractions in one fell swoop, because we find all the infractions at the same time. I think that a person should get a single warning before any infractions are put in - whether it's for one bogus score or seven - to ensure they know what they're doing wrong. A single infraction pt for every bogus score following - 2 or 3 for blatant cheating.

8. How much time should you have to edit posts? Delete posts?

Barring special circumstances where we may be using a single post to record progress of something, I don't see why we'd need to edit/delete posts after a couple days. I guess like 1 hour for deleting, and 72 hrs for editing would suffice.

9. How many PM should you be able to store in your inbox?
I like having more, but I usually hold on to everything. Given the ability to export your PMs when your box is full, I don't see why the current number needs to increase.

10. Should user titles be based on post count. Example. Currently if you have zero posts your title is "non-forum member", 1 post = "first time poster" 2+ posts = "member". Should this be changed to along the lines of 1000 posts = "retro addict".

They should not be based on post. Rep? Maybe.

11. How should we treat "hukt on fonikz wurkd fer me" posts? I say give them infraction points and punish them the same as those that submit bogus scores.

Ignore them....maybe add a :whatthe:

12. Spam on your first post is an automatic IP ban. Not really up for debate. Just a rule.

13. If you reach 5 infraction points and change your user name to avoid punishment, what should happen. I say that is OK but if your second account gets one infraction point then you are IP banned.

In accordance with what I posted above, I think that a warning + 5 infractions in reason enough for a user banning. Even trying to circumvent the system should get your IP Banned. I just feel bad for the poor brothers and sisters.

14. To maintain your Game Mod title how much work must you do per month. I say 30 items per month. Items include edit descriptions, update screen shots, upload games.

Fair, to a degree. Some items are much more time consuming than others. But I agree with the concept. This is definitely a case where I say, "Your site, your call."

15. Currently if you double post in less than 24 hours then your posts are merged into one. Good?

I have divded this into 3 sections. The first section I think we are in agreement on and can move forward with. I know I am not a great writer and I need someone to re-write these rules. Make them easy to read and understand. Shorter is better. The end result will be in the format that the FAQs are in.

If you break a rule then a mod can give you infraction points. The number of points you recieve depends on how severe the rule is that your broke. Infraction Points are temporary. When a mod gives you one they set an exparation date. If you have 5 infraction points at one time then you will not be allowed to play our games. If you have 10 then you will not be allowed to use our site. When the infraction points expire your privilages will be reset to normal.

1. On posts, you create it, you can control it. If you can not come up with a different word than a swear/curse word, you might have more growing up to do. Keep all content you can control to a PG13 level. Do not use @#$% or [beep] or WTF in substitution for swear words. Instead use synonyms. If you break this rule you will receive a warning and your posts will be edited. If you do not head the warnings and editing your posts begins to takes too much time from the mods then you will not be allowed to post.

1B. Links, videos, games, quotes and other content that you post but do not personally create - If it is not PG13 or less then clearly label it as such and put it in a spoiler tag.

2. No hate speach. This means do not say "You {insert group of people} suck". I think this might be too obvious to need to be a written rule.

Trash talk is OK and expected, if you have the scores to back it up. Do not take trash talk too serious. If someone beats your score and rubs it in then be the bigger person and congratulate them then go take your score back. Don't start a fight about it or hold grudges.


7. When you submit a high score in an NES game you must manually type in your score. A screen shot will be saved when you submit your score. A mod will verify that the score on the screen and the score that you enter match. If it does not match you will receive an Infraction Point. If it appears to be an honest mistake then you will receive one point that will expire in 1 month. If you were obviously trying to get away with something then you will recieve more points. Your score will also be deleted. There are no exceptions to this. If you got a really high score but missed the chance to take the screen shot then you have to start over. If you make a mistake and submit a bogus score PM a mod right away.

12. If it appears that you signed up for an account just to spam us or take advantage of us in some other way then you will be IP banned. All spam for the past 3 months has been automatically caught and deleted before it was posted so trying to spam is a waste of time. Since most spamers are robots and will not read this, this rule is a waste of time.

Third Section. The rest are not really rules and will be covered when we make the FAQs. For now forget about them.

Off Topic posts are something that I would like to hear from everyone else about, I have been thinking about it and I'm leaning towards being more strict all over. I'm tired of 3 word posts that say nothing, and add nothing to the thread.

Personally, I love what you have here. I've loved it since as soon as I saw it. It makes sense, and I'm not sure why more forums don't do it. I think this is mainly because I've always hated post count on forums. It encourages spam, and it encourages division between established members and new members. If there are ranks of title, or little pictures, They'll seem like goals to achieve, and take away the whole "post for fun" idea that all forums should have.

I can't stand wannabe modding. Not only does it flood the forum with useless posts, but it achieves nothing, as the real mods won't see the thread any sooner just because someone else has posted there. The only way to make the mod see it is to tell them about it. The only thing it can possibly achieve is to make you look "cool" or "smart" (in the eyes of whom?) and to make the person who broke the rule look stupid, which isn't something to be encouraged. The real mods can actually do something about it, and they should be sensitive and friendly.

I think a good solution is - the forum mods should be strict about off topic posts and regular users should be lax. I think regular users should not attempt to enforce the rules - it just causes bickering.

I do not think *navi* should be forbidden or encouraged. I think a thesaurus should be encouraged instead. Maybe it is just me but I do not see how replacing words with asterisks and the like accomplishes anything.

My sig's all cool. I'd rep you for the userbar idea Hobbesy but you're the last person I've repped so it'll have to wait until I eventually forget. I feel all naked and sad when it doesn't show at the end of every post of mine. I HATE THAT!!!!!

On the subject of forum modding. I have the ability to mod the forums but its not my main purpose here. I tend to leave it to the regular forum mods unless its something blatant such as spam. It's the same as my Game Mod ability. I have it just so I can help out every now and then, but its not my main function.

I can mod games, contests and forums and admin. So I am all the above. I am just saying I want to start being lazy when it comes to modding the forums so I can focus on my other duties.
