I prefer unpopular to mildly popular things. Things that claim to be the best thing ever that everyone simply must try usually turn me off.

Yeah I can understand when something is hyped as being "the best" but we have to remember that it's marketing, they all wanna claim to be on top.
Btw I was just looking at the DVD case for a movie called "The Sure Thing" and it said something along the lines of "Easily the best movie ever made" by some reviewer. I had to do a double take because of how retarded that claim was.

Yeah it's a typical 80s movie. It might be cool(it's got Tim Robbins) but I doubt it's any better than most. They sure couldn't resist putting that quote on the cover though.

I think a lot of it for me, was that although my expectations were low (after seeing the trailers), it was just so much worse than I thought it would be. I was hoping it would at least have some decent science fiction themes and ideas, but everything in it was a total cut and paste of DWW and Pocahontas. It was very Sci-Fi lite where the only real mission for James Cameron seemed to be to

While this theme is fine, it was at the expense of any character development for any character in the film. I would have liked to have seen both perspectives and maybe seen a

I'm surprised because James Cameron is typically good at this.

In the case of GI Joe, there is next to no character development either, but the movie doesn't pretend to be anything other than a whizz bang action movie. A, "Slam Bam Then You Ma'am" type of film if you will (<---- that's for you Kong).

Avatar tried to masquerade itself off as some movie that was about something important, and I think Cameron handled it in a ham fisted way.

I was also shocked at how unimpressive the 3-D was. The CGI was great, but the 3-D was hardly used at all. Even though I went in expecting the story to maybe not be great, I thought the 3-D would be great since it has been so hyped for the last 4-5 years. I was very underwhelmed.

I think I just didn't expect the film to be so Dances With My Little Pony. I thought with Cameron doing it it would at least have great action sequences, and I didn't think they were great either.

I'm glad you enjoyed it DB. A lot of other people seemed to as well. Maybe the movie is better appreciated for people who haven't seen all the things it ripped off.

I don't have much interest in debating this, Avatar isn't THAT great imo but it's still good. I still think you're being overly critical and letting the hype ruin it for you. Those are your problems, not the movie.

We'll have to agree to disagree. I really am glad you and a bunch of people liked it. It just wasn't my thing.

I am proud to say that GI Joe (while stupid) was more entertaining than Avatar, but I was a big fan of the toys when I was young, so some of it was that.

I was also a huge fan of the toys, but I thought the movie was the laziest piece of crap I've seen in a long time.

I can only take so much hype before I start to get annoyed. The trailers were not impressive at all to me, yet they were shown all the time, months in advance. There were ads that advertised "Avatar" within the ad. Most of the hype seemed to be along the lines of "Special effects!" and "James Cameron is directing this!". The more I saw of it, the less I wanted anything to do with it. Near the end, I was hoping it would bomb horribly.
