At Nintendo’s E3 2010 booth, the talk of the show was the 3DS. Everywhere you turned, people were chatting up the awesome effects of the system. What most people didn’t know is that there were some hints at classic games getting a 3D makeover for the system.
A trailer reel was playing at the booth that showcased various old-school games running on the 3DS. Mega Man 2, Castlevania, Urban Champion, Kid Icarus, Yoshi’s Island, Smash Ping Pong, Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros., Tennis, The Legend of Zelda, Metroid and Mystery of Murasame Castle are just some displayed. According to Reggie, these games are coming over to the 3DS, and they might receive more than just a 3D effect facelift.
I asked Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime what to make of all these old-school remakes. Were they all going to be games on the 3DS? Yes, he said, but he cautioned me not to think of them as remakes. Echoing comments by Nintendo’s head developer, Shigeru Miyamoto from a roundtable earlier in the week, Fils-Aime said these games were potentially getting more than just ported over.
Could a 3DS Virtual Console be in the works? Are we going to see new life pumped into these titles via a 3D effect, if not more?
