Success! Here I achieve the (almost) lowest score possible in Super Mario Bros. for the NES. No save states or slowdown was used, but I did increase the frame skip by quite a bit when waiting at the flag poles. Since you probably don't want to watch that, I cut out almost 8 minutes of video where I'm just running out the clock.
I pull off a couple interesting tricks and glitches to make this work. In 4-2, I backwards jump into a few obstacles to scroll the screen without Mario to trick the pipe into taking me to the vine's usual location. In 8-1, I have to perform a pretty precise jump off a goomba to avoid some coins. Also, getting under the first set of 2 coins towards the end of this level takes a very careful jump, and always makes me nervous. In 8-4, I scroll the screen to just the right position to allow me to use some blocks as platforms. No wall jumps are required in this run at all.
I show off a bit at the start, but after 8-1 I start to take my time. 8-3 is really a tough level. I took a chance to run and jump past a couple hammer bros. towards the end, but the final 2 I took slow. These are close together, so getting by them the careful way proves to be quite challenging. As you can see, there were a lot of hammers to dodge there.

Re: Possible lowest SMB1 score achieved.
But why even bother with this? It's interesting but it seems pretty pointless.

Re: Possible lowest SMB1 score achieved.
I thought it was cool. Why do you feel that it's pointless DB?

Re: Possible lowest SMB1 score achieved.
I think it's cool too. Minimalist runs in games go back a long way.
I see it as a new way to challenge yourself in a game to give it some replay value.

Re: Possible lowest SMB1 score achieved.
It's hard to say why I think it's pointless. Just seems like it's not worth doing and it's not a big deal.

Re: Possible lowest SMB1 score achieved.
Not really related to Mario, but I wonder how you would be able to obtain the lowest score possible in 1945k III?
The less you shoot down, the higher your score. Would that mean you just have to find a balance between just enough and too many?

Re: Possible lowest SMB1 score achieved.
I could get the lowest score in California games, just keep hitting it but not catching it more than four times in a row.

Re: Possible lowest SMB1 score achieved.
I think that is a pretty amazing feat.
1. No power-ups, no deaths; not an easy task.
2. No coins (due to no deaths, it really does not matter much on this); no bonus lives for 100 coins.
I did not watch the video, but those two things to me make it harder than going through normally.

Re: Possible lowest SMB1 score achieved.
I wouldn't say amazing. I think lots of people are obsessed with SMB1 enough that they could beat it without dieing or getting a power up. I was impressed with missing the coins because it makes some jumps harder though.

I bolded what I thought was the most impressive things he did. I actually think it's quite amazing. I like minimalist runs. I find them interesting to be honest
When he jumped off the Goomba that was falling off the edge and when he jumped inbetween the wall and the blocks in 8-4 to get down the pipe, I could just imagine his face like this:
