Starting tonight, I will be playing Final Fantasy VII with the goal to play all the way through it. Usually, I stop partway through due to loss of interest.
This time will be different, and this thread is to be the reason why.
I will be posting my thoughts, notes on progress and that. I'll ask for help if I don't know where to go, that kind of thing. Basically, I am making this a play-through which all of you will contribute to in one way or another.
Any advice I should heed going into it?
I don't know why I am doing this, but I am. Expect somewhat periodic updates.
Okay, thanks. That will likely be helpful. I've had problems with my not saving in other RPGs, I don't save, I tell myself "I'll make it to the next save point", then I proceed to get killed and have to re-do a big chunk again.
Saving a lot is always good advice for an RPG. Don't worry about multiple saves with FF7, there isn't much to screw up, just be sure you're ready to save when you do.
I haven't played in years but I'll try to help whenever I can.
I always use multiple save files, even though I don't usually load from them. I highly recommend that you do the same.
I recommend that you don't bother with summons, but I never have in this series so maybe you like to play differently. I also recommend, particularly during the first disk, that you search around everywhere (hit the select button every now and then) and grab all of the treasures.

I've never been summon-centric in the FF series. I don't like watching nine-hour cutscenes just to find out my attack missed.
Is this like FFXII, where I will have to consciously avoid certain treasure chests to get some of the better weapons in the game.
I actually wrote down which four to avoid in XII, just because I like to get every treasure chest, and I have to know exactly which ones to avoid.
Save yourself the time and read a walkthrough on areas you already know. Waste your time searching if you want but I see no point.
I disagree about summons. Some can be really good and entertaining. I remember I liked the Hades summon animation even though it was long. You get that one late though. Odin is a good summon but I forget when you get it. Chance of instant kill on normal enemies is powerful.
The only FF game I hated summons in was FFT because the animation sucked and they weren't worth it.

Aerith's final limit break is a pain in the ass to get also.

One of the biggest tragedies of the game is the loss of her magic stat, being that she's practically one of the only characters who leans to that field anyways. Using her isn't a total waste though, since she is in your party for about half of the game.
some people recommend using at least 2 save files in case you screw yourself. I never had this problem in 7 though.
Yeah, do this.

I hated her and only used her when I had to. Tifa is cooler.
I didn't hate her, but I agree.
In fact, the thing with this game is that anyone can pretty much be anything in this game with the use of materia and whatnot.
It does not really matter who you have in your party as your "main guys" if you choose to have your main people. You can work on everyone a bit, but there isn't a whole lot of point except for the times where you are forced to use people.
My last run-through a while ago, I told you about for much of the same reasons. I ended up using Yuffie, Tifa and Cloud. I've also gotten to the end of the game with Vincent & Red as my other party members when I was a kid, but I had no clue what I was doing then and couldn't win. I personally liked Tifa & Vincent the most, with Red as a close runner up, but really it doesn't matter.
You should be at about level 60-65 in the end for your 3 main guys, again if you have main guys. I overshot it by a long shot thinking this game was brutally hard in the end because of how stupidly I leveled up as a kid. I have a screenshot saved actually of how much I overshot it if you care to see:

The final boss took me about 3 turns to kill considering I had a 4x cut with 9999 damage for cloud.
I also used quite a few MP & HP plus materias which you get later near the end of disc one, then they are offered quite commonly. You really don't have to use HP plus and MP plus, but it might be handy to use one on each person because they'll be at the max level near the end if you get them early on, meaning a +50% health/magic power boost.
if you need to know where to get the ultimate weapons and final limit breaks later on, then I know how to get Cloud's, Tifa's, Yuffie's, Red's, & I believe Cid's.
Do me a favour and name your character's custom names if possible. I never got why people reuse the same names the game gives you. I always name characters, ever since pokemon. I'm really good at it though, the names just come to me lol.

Same. The game names them for a reason! The only time I ever changed a character's name was Barrett's to Mr. T. Had to be done!
And Cam? Last time I beat it - all characters (- Aeris) level 99, ultimate weapon and I had 4 master magics, 3 master commands and 3 master summons. + mastered HP & MP + materia for everyone. And you thought you were overpowered
Thus far, I've only played for about an hour. Tifa has just joined the party, and I've just gone to the place where battle mechanics and save points are explained. It seems a little late, as you pass save points three times before then, and actually end up in several fights before this point. So, you already have some understanding of the battle mechanics and how to save.
After setting the bomb in the reactor, I got to the top floor, and found out that I needed to go way back and get that Jesse fellow, so I ran back down. I hated how the time kept ticking away even during the victory pose. I found two potions in the first area, on the guy closest to the screen, one on the side of him facing the screen, and one on the side facing away from the screen.
So far, it is more entertaining than I remember.
Make sure you hold 'X' to run. I know that seems like common sense, but my brothers and I never figured that out until we had the game for a few days when we were kids lol. Even so, we all got out of the first timed reactor with like 5 minutes to spare.

I hate custom names.
To each his own.

Lol, +1. You should have seen my brothers new file. The names were retarded. He named his Mr. T as well, but the others were pretty hilarious. I can't say some of them here however.
