A clear is if you finish the game. If you don't you don't get a clear. If the game does not end, there shouldn't be any clears awarded.

MARP is an excellent resource for anything MAME.
RU is great for emulation.

Personally I think speed runs are more hassle than they are worth, especially when getting down to the nitty-gritty of a single frame. Best left to original hardware for sure!
