Hi Kernzy, I really enjoy this genre, these are my favorites at the moment:
Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Operation Resurrection
{ I'm currently playing this one; if DOOM were set during WW2, this would be the result.}
SS Paranormal Division under command of Himmler himself are up to something bad, and you are being sent in to find out what they're up to, and to stop it if possible.
In their rush to please their commanders, the Nazis become careless and the situation takes a turn for the worst as they unintentionally release hordes of zombies and demons while trying to achieve their ultimate goal - resurrecting an invincible warrior from the ancient past whom they hoped would join their cause and grant them final victory.
I can't say enough about this game; one of my favorites on the PS2.
It looks awesome

and has a killer storyline, plays smoothly, has puzzles/ mazes you must solve, incredible locations with lots of secrets and surprises, horrific enemies which get more gruesome as the game progresses { and yes, lots of Nazis yelling 'HALT!' in between encounters with monsters}, it's quite a long game as well with huge replay value.
The Suffering
{this is an underrated hit, possibly overshadowed by some other title at its launch?}
You are a death row inmate, freshly arrived on a prison island .
Shortly after settling into your new cell, you hear loud crashes and the sound of things being smashed followed by screams .. zombies of many different and horrifying forms have suddenly taken over the entire island!
By chance you are freed from your cell and acquire some weapons.
As you explore the old prison, you learn the many dark chapters of its past .. wicked things done by evil men dominate the history of the island, even prior to the building of the prison complex, and have left a permanent taint on it .. ghosts appear to you,

sharing their own tales, providing useful hints and tips, shrieking in torment, or plain jumping out and trying to scare you!
.. but don't worry,Dr. Killjoy is among the ghosts who remain and he helps show you what your part shall be in this continuing history, and why it is those spirits choose to aid you in this terrifying quest to uncover the past of the haunted prison and the cursed island it was built on.

While this game isn't the looker that Wolfenstein is, it's definitely got great gameplay, puzzles and challenge as well to keep it interesting ..and since things jump out at you fairly regularly I doubt you'll fall asleep playing this one.

Any of the Resident evil series, before Resident Evil 5. The must-haves are definitely Resident Evil: Survivor, Outbreak, and 4. Its a good mix between secrets that aren't necessary to proceed, puzzles, and great gameplay. They are for the PS1, but Resident evil 1-3 are among my favorite games. Very well put together. I'd suggest resident evil 3 (nemesis) for the recommendation.

Reason: recommendation, not gift
Want some good gaming? Not too many First persons beside what was mentioned above... try these 3rd persons though.. Resident Evil 4 , Manhunt, All the Silent Hills , Fatal Frames , And Alone in the dark games.Try the Siren Series too!
The entire game is just sneaking up on people and killing them in sick ways using various weapons, which is horrific in its own way, but I do not think this game can be called a 'horror' game.
Psychopathic stealth - killings galore, but no monsters, undead, aliens, demons, or anything else.

I get your point , But Monsters , Undead , Aliens and Demons Don't always necessarily make the Horror Genre.

I think it counts as horror. Some people would get a sick thrill out of it, I was horrified by what the game wanted to me to do and what the npcs were doing. It also had some serious tension going on. It's like Texas Chainsaw Massacre, that's horror right?
How about Oblivion or Skyrim? Those games have some pretty twisted stuff in them. Happen upon an abandoned lighthouse, come to find out the entire family was murdered by a rat one by one, and you get to read all their journals about it. Not to mention cannibalistic families and all sorts of other dark situations throughout the game.
In the end it all comes down to point of view and personal taste I guess, and when taken in that light I can see why people would say Manhunt is a horror game.
Hey, I know we're looking for PS2 titles here but I want to recommend Nightmare Creatures for PS1 - what a fun game! -and graphics are not bad; I regret the day I sold this one.
.. I tried to find a screenshot but this game is heavily overshadowed by its sequel, Nightmare Creatures II.
I preferred the first NC myself.
