A Theory on Jumping Mechanics
"The more realistic games become, the more this will complicate the simple act of jumping. But jumping, as a way to relate to the game, is no more likely to vanish than shooting. Not as long as we're given buttons to push."

Re: A Theory on Jumping Mechanics
Jumping is absent in FF11 and some people complain about how stupid that is. It's in WoW and some people complain that it's annoying and stupid. It seems there's a divide, at least for RPGs.
I noticed a lack of jump in gears of war but they had the duck walk/crouched run thing instead and I think it worked well. Besides that it seems like a staple in FPS games. People like to jump to avoid danger and to surprise enemies, myself included.

Well that was a pretty retarded comment, care to back it up or is it ok if we all just dismiss it and move on?

You obviously have no idea what you're talking about. Was the last FPS you played on N64 or something?

Re: A Theory on Jumping Mechanics
Well you're either trying to troll me or you're the problem in the equation not the jump ability. I know from personal experience that it works in some FPS. Please enlighten me about how I'm wrong though.

I know a hell of a lot more about this industry than 99% of the members, does that count for anything?

The first part is just wrong and the second part is your personal opinion. Is that the extent of your side of this or is there something concrete?

It makes a 3d game sluggish instantly, there is never an advantage to jumping, its just to progress through the level.

It's funny that I never noticed that in all the first person games I've played. Weird huh?

If you say so.

So you really don't have much experience with modern FPS? You jump around a lot in any modern FPS and you'll be the guy getting used for target practice. But go ahead believe whatever you want since you are obviously so in touch with the industry.

Re: A Theory on Jumping Mechanics
So are the old drunkards done arguing?
Either way I think jumping is necessary in the majority of games. In RPGs it can be done without, but other than that it should be there.
Anyone want to imagine playing Street Fighter II without jumping? How about Samurai Shodown? Guilty Gear? Tekken? Super Mario Bros.? Donkey Kong? Call of Duty? (I think there was the ability to jump) Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth? Mario and Luigi: Super Star Saga? Metroid? Super Mario 64?
You see how many games are dependent on the ability to jump? Take that away and all of these games would suck, even if the levels and other mechanics were adjusted accordingly.

Re: A Theory on Jumping Mechanics
So why don't you go into some detail about why jumping makes a FPS bad automatically? I can agree that it's dumb in some of them but not all. In some games it's an important part of the movement mechanics and combat, I know from experience.

I'm not a drunk I'm just crotchety.
Also I think COD is a good example of FPS that doesn't need jump. Imo an action button would be better for the few times you need to climb over stuff. Otherwise jumping just gets you killed in that game.

I don't mean if there is a jump button the game is bad, I meant if it relies too heavily on precision jumping, the game will suck. Nobody thinks its fun to climb to the top of the room only to fall down because you can't see the edges of the platform. As far as I'm concerned jumping has never added to the fun factor of a fps, It doesn't fit in with the game, but there is nothing wrong jumping over a little bunker in COD because it's minimal. Plus people always look really retarded jumping in fps's.

Well jeez that totally changes what you said, who wouldn't agree with that? When I talk of jumping being cool I mean like jumping over obstacles, to avoid grenades/explosives or as part of the combat mechanics. How many FPS actually have an emphasis on precision jumping? What you're describing sounds a lot more like platform games than FPS.

Re: A Theory on Jumping Mechanics
You seriously took what I said to mean I thought a jump button in a fps is automatically a game ruiner? A lot of fps include the jumping mechanic as a facet of the game, I'm not gonna start listing them, and I assume you know what I mean and are playing dumb to troll me.
