Anyone know about Video Editing?

does anyone know anything about video editing?
prefferably in adobe premier pro cs3

I have a movie that we recorded for school and a video cam corder.
the guy who owned the cam corder said that the video was 1080p (not the issue)
the video camera has a native file type of .mts

I used avs video converter to convert the .mts to a .mov quicktime file so I could import it into adobe premier.

after I converted the .mts is lumped all my video clips into 1 file about 400 MB.

I dont know if that file size is to big for premier or what but I am having some serious lag issues.

the video does not play back in real time. it does not even play back in choppy time very well. mostly I am working of audio only because the video does not play very well.

even selecting differnt menus like file or project or clip has about a 3 second lag.

I have no idea what is wrong. but the only thing I can think of is that I messed up on the file conversion or something.

my computre has a
Intel core 2 quad core CPU Q8300 @ 2.50GHz

8.00 GIG (Ram)
64 bit operating system on windows 7

I dont know how to check which video card I have but I am pretty sure it is a Nvida

Anyone know anything or have any ideas?

ps. I tried doing a disk cleanup on my hard drive and a defragmentation. both did not help at all =D

I just did a side test of a seperate converted file.

I took a 400 MB .mts file and converted it by itselft to a .mov file and it compressed it to 30 MB

I loaded that into premeir in a new project and that 30 MB file still lags the system with unworkable situations.

Re: Anyone know about Video Editing?

ok, I recently worked with premier for a school thing too. I don't know if you noticed there are to viewing sections, I know what one is called but the other one is the preview. What would happen with me was that if you just clicked on the video or just played it, it would have lag sometimes, but if you put the video in the timeline and play it in the preview part the first time it would have a lot of lag and the second it would play normal. Many times when I would add effects and photos and then played the whole video, the first time I'd have lag and the second it would play normal.

Also, check the video that you converted. If you don't choose the right properties and stuff your converted video might end up going faster or getting messed up.

I don't know much about editing, but I am good a figuring out programs and my dad is an editing expert so he helped me out through the phone for many things.

My video only had 1 video and lots of photos, but I remember that sometimes when my dad edits video it seems to be lagging, but then he would do a render and it would be fixed. I was having problems with a fade out effect I wanted on the audio and my dad told me that I would have to render the video to be able to listen to the effect applied.

Hope any of that helped

Re: Anyone know about Video Editing?

thanks for the reply

my teacher and I went through my system today and we narrowed the problem down to
my file size
codec issues
update issues
and file screen resolution.

so I am going to try and change those things and see if it gets better.

Re: Anyone know about Video Editing?

You can keep the clips separate in avs if you need too. It's under the options somewhere.
