I know that MST3K made fun of it, but I thought Space: 1999 was an absolutely brilliant show, in its own way.
What stood out for me the most about it was the believability of Moonbase Alpha, its transport tube system, the Comlink system, the Eagles, etc. - the realistic nature of the technology, how it could be done IRL.
All of this taken aside from the shape - shifting 'Space Princess', Maya, and the otherworldly/ ghostly things they encounter as the moon drifts through space {which I agree border on comical at times} but such was the nature of the show; mixing the believable with the fantastic - and given the fact that most TV shows have a very finite budget, you have to give them credit for what they did manage to do.
Before I post some pics I want to add that after season 1 it got really corny at times, mostly because the soundtrack went from a pleasant Classical score to the stereotypical 70's 'waka - waka - waka' - which really disappointed me, and while I'm here bitching about it I'll add that I didn't like the new opening in season 2 either.
Now pics: {only the first pic is so big}

Moonbase Alpha: originally a command center geared to oversee burial of dangerous nuclear waste from Earth, its staff were transformed instantly and unwillingly into permanent residents of the Moon following a catastrophic incident ..

Before the i Pod, there was the Comlock: gaze in awe at the Radio Shack - level technology .. but this concept was amazing at the time; not only was this your video messaging/ recording system and communicator, but your access key to things around the base as well.

Mission Control: the command center of Moonbase Alpha, located in the central hub of the base.

Personal quarters of Dr. Helena Russell, Chief Medical Officer of Moonbase Alpha.

Note the screens and computer access terminals surrounding the support column, these are located all over the base.

Typical Moonbase Alpha corridors, featuring lighted walls {way ahead of their time} and again the computer access on the columns.

Commander Koenig's personal quarters, featuring furniture by Ikea?
You know that access terminal is in there somewhere.
.. try as I may, I cannot find a picture of one of my favorite things from the show: the Transport Tube system used to move to/ from the different wings of the base.
I still want to ride on that thing!
I really enjoy the series, particularly season 1.
Someone did a facelift for the show called Space: 1999 to 2099 which included stunning CGI visual additions and augmentations right down to the finest details which was posted on youtube for some time until - you guessed it - someone complained and it got taken down.
