A crazy idea - The Retrouprising App

I don't even know if this is possible, but I had a crazy idea the other night. It was alcohol induced, but I was playing with my Iphone and had a wild idea that someone might be able to create a "Retrouprising" App that would allow people to play retro games on their Iphones, Droid, Ipads or whatever. I'm thinking creating an App for systems that don't require many buttons (NES, Genesis, Gameboy) would be ideal.

I have seen there are currently some Arcade style apps out there (Capcom has one) so creating an App with an RU emulator may not only be possible, but incredibly cool.
If it is possible, it might also be a good potential revenue source. Just about anyone is willing to pay $.99 for App.

@ Kong or anyone else who knows computers: Can this be done? If so, how?

I think there may be some issues if there's a profit to be made.

I wouldn't want Flash. I would want something like Aox or Nescafe or Java emulators.

I don't have any handhelds or know much about them.

But I'm pretty sure that Apple locks down what is available to run on Apple handhelds (iphone, ipad, ipods). They wont even allow Flash or Java.

They claim it is for the reasons that NES limited 3rd party games in the 80's, to make sure it isn't flooded with crap. But I think the reason is so they can get a cut of the money for every app sold. Allowing Flash and Java would undermine both of those goals.

I don't think they would allow emulators or roms.

You could probably do it on a Linux or Windows based smart phone. If someone has a device that supports a full version of Flash or Java and wants to do some testing I might look into it. But it probably isn't a direction I would want to go just because I still have lots of other ideas I know how to pull off that I don't want to spend much time learning new things for new ideas. Especially when I have to rely on others to do the testing.

I think Kong is right about Apple. They want to lockdown as much of these apps as possible for their own profit. I looked into it briefly last night and saw there are some programs out there that somehow convert Java so that it works on Iphones. It's way more complicated than I will ever understand, but it's fun to dream.

Update: I ran a Google search "emulators on Iphone" and found this link:

I'd be afraid to download any of these but it appears people are already doing this.

After a very brief google search it looks like you could get a regular emulator or a flash or java emulator on the iPhone but you can not load roms from the internet. You would have to do it the old fashioned way and download the roms from a rom site and store them on your phone.

If you have something like 4G, you can be on the forums anytime you want using the browser. That's what I do sometimes.

When I got my Droid, I wasn't even there to get a Droid, I was actually there to activate my Cellphone Watch, and they threw the Droid in for free, but they said they were out of 3G sim cards and that my watch wouldn't take a 4G one, so I'm kinda left with basic crap :/

I think that they are called "apps" to distinguish them from standard computer applications.
