View Full Version : Spider-Man Reboot!

For those of you who don't already know, there will not be a Spider-Man 4 instead there will be a Spider-Man reboot. Pretty much what happened was that director Sam Raimi couldn't find a script that he liked and he wasn't going to make the release date for Spider-Man 4 on May 4th, 2011. So he departed from the project altogether and Tobey Maguire as well. Sony Pictures plans to have James Vanderbilt write a script for the reboot and send the web-slinger back to high school. What are your thoughts on this, good or bad? And if you have any wishes as to what you want the reboot to include in it please feel free to share!
Well I think Batman Begins is a good example of what could be. I really feel that this could help. The Spiderman movies were ok in my opinion. I would have liked more depth into the characters and story. Spiderman 3 was a waste of my time. I hated how there were three big enemies squeezed into one movie. Venom is more than big enough of a character that he deserves all of spiderman's attention. So yeah, I think taking it back to the begining and starting from scratch would be a more than welcome idea.

I agree with Jozman but I'm not as optimistic about it. I'm worried that they'll try to focus on the teen drama thing to attract a young crowd and just ignore all the older fans who won't care for it.
Btw how about the rumors of Robert Pattinson taking over the role of Spiderman? Sure it's being denied by everyone but Hollywood is known for casting retardedly to capitalize on fame. Coming off the Twilight movies this might just be true in the end. If he plays spiderman there's an automatic fanbase from day 1. If this happens I doubt I'll watch anymore Spiderman moves.
I always hated spiderman except for Retro Uprising - Arcade - Spider-Man and Venom in Separation Anxiety (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/3770/)
So are the just going to start the whole series over with new actors and retell it from the beginning. Lame.

I agree on this one. I didn't like Spider-Man 3 very much (tried to do too much), I thought the first two were pretty good. I also am not excited about seeing it go all high school. I hear the next X-men is going to be the same way, so that's kind of a bummer too.

Too true. To me it seems like they are trying to appeal to the little kids instead of doing stories with more mature characters that would appeal to older audiences. That's how I felt about the more recent X-Men Evolution cartoon too. It was the same way.
Right now, I think the Iron Man and Batman franchises are the only ones that are still trying to do anything more mature. I hope Thor will be cool, though.
I had higher hopes for the new stuff coming out of Marvel, but I read an article last week where Disney was talking about how they are about to get more involved in Marvel films, so I don't know what's going to happen with that now either.

To be fair I think Xmen Evolution was meant for kids anyways.
Btw did you hear the next Xmen movie is supposed to be about a young Magneto? Sure it sounds like it might be ok but you can bet he'll be emo and uninteresting. This isn't how it should be of course, remember that scene where he bends the bars in the concentration camp? Yeah, it better be more like that.

Sure, but the X-Men cartoon from the 90's was too, and it was awesome. They told great stories and featured mostly grown up characters, not the Muppet Babies versions.

I don't know if it will be true, but what I heard is that it will feature young high school versions of Cyclops, Jean Gray, etc., but will somehow feature the Magneto origin story too. I think originally they were going to do an X-Men Origins: Magneto movie, but now they are going to combine the story with X-Men High. :talktohand:

I understand marketing to younger people but I know when I was a kid I wanted to emulate older people and adult situations, not stuff I was already doing basically. Am I alone in that? Was there some shift in our culture that I missed? Was I so cool I missed this lameness when I was a kid?
Stop making our cool characters lame.

It is annoying, marketing to the 6-10 year old crowd, and Disney's involvment could make it worse.
Batman has never seemed to be marketed towards kids, it's just too violent and dark and any change to this will ruin Batman.

I was really looking forward to The Lizard showing up in the fourth installment in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man series, although its been rumored that he was going to go with The Vulture played by the amazing John Malkovich. I'd also like to see The Scorpion. But since they're rumored to be going with the Ultimate Spider-Man storylines we'll probably see a Spidey vs. Venom in the first movie. Hopefully they get it right this time...

I haven't seen it, but he is a good actor, and has the balls to play a gay cowboy, something most actors wouldn't touch.
Dudebro
01-28-2010, 09:19 PM
Yeah it's a bold role but I'm sure he did it with that in mind. He wanted to be known as an actor who'll do anything for a role, being Enis accomplished that goal I'd say. Without spoiling anything he gives his all for the role. I don't remember any nudity(might've blacked it out:lol:) but it would be very uncomfortable for homophobes.
I don't wanna derail this but I doubt a topic about Brokeback would get much activitiy. Has anyone here seen it?

Yeah Robert Pattinson doesn't seem to have the same talent that Ledger had. I'm afraid he'd get picked purely on his twilight hype.

That's true. Still, the Spider-Man movie series needs someone who won't make a complete wimp out of Spider-Man and yet play a good nerd, which is what Peter Parker is.
I heard rumors that Zac Efron is going to be Spiderman

fenrir1887
02-05-2010, 02:17 PM
No way is he going to be Spider-Man. He fails on both counts. He's a wimp and certainly not smart enough to play Parker. Besides, he's too young since I hear the latest takes place while Peter was teaching school.
Really? I heard that he was going to be back in high school. What difference does it make if he's a wimp or not smart enough to play Parker? If he's a good actor then he should be able to play the role just fine. I've never seen him in any movie, but he's young enough to play the role and I can see him looking goofy wearing glasses and dressed up to fit the role. If you're going to hold up the actor to be strong and smart like the character one plays, then Topher was not a good choice to play Venom. He's not strong enough and he's a bit too smart.
fenrir1887
02-05-2010, 02:31 PM
Come on, Efron's not good enough. Look at Spider-Man again. While it's true anybody could play him, Spider-Man requires a touch not even Zac Efron's got. Still, it's up in the air.
Hey, I'm not saying that I want him to play the role. I'm just spitting what I heard. I'll give him credit on his looks, but as far as his acting goes, I already stated that I've never seen the kid act.
Ok so if he's not good enough then who?

I think the superman thing is different. Superman is just boring compared to most other super heros. With all the recent exposure to Marvel it's hard to make a movie about a generic indestructable good guy who's only weakness seems to be so easy to find. Even a bad guy with no super powers is able to pwn superman regularly. That would never happen to Wolverine.

Nightcrawler is the bomb! Great mutant power with sword skills is a good combination. But yeah, Superman is a bit overrated. Batman on the other hand is one of the best super heroes out there because he needs no fancy super powers. Batman could even bang Wonder Woman in he wanted to.

Don't get me going. The problem is most people think that way. First off, just because Batman has 127 different martial arts styles does not mean he can beat Wonder Woman. Secondly, besides the fact said bad guy happens to be Lex Luthor don't mean anything. I'm a big fan of Superman and have read plenty of his comics. Powers or no, he always finds a way to beat his enemies.

Well that's nothing special considering almost all super heros do the same. My point is Superman is supposed to be this all powerful, invincible hero but he's thwarted regularly by a guy with no super powers. Batman is the better DC character because he's overcoming his weakness(lack of powers) to defeat super powered enemies. He's more relatable, superman is just too perfect so it's hard to care about him.
My opinion is bias, Batman is the only DC character I like(that I can think of). Marvel ftw.
fenrir1887
02-08-2010, 12:24 PM
Nobody said that. Superman's flaws are what make him a better hero than most think. Also, if you're referring to Luthor, the problem is that's not true either. Read Superman/Batman Public Enemies. Thanks to Batman, Superman thwarted Luthor's attempts to discredit him. Secondly, another case where Superman stood tall compared to Luthor was the Final Crisis.
He ended it and Batman supposedly lost his life, though the epilogue ended in a cliffhanger.
Dudebro
02-09-2010, 05:49 AM
I'm not saying that superman loses to lex all the time. All superheros have to fall before they can rise up dramatically. That's the most basic comic storyline and it happens to him all the time, another reason he's so boring btw.
I'm just saying that superman isn't that interesting because he has these over the top super powers but his primary enemy is some guy with a rock. Batman is just more interesting.
Obviously that's my opinion but I think it's somewhat true for most people. Btw I'm not a comic person really. I've never bought comics, I've only read them second hand and even then I'm not a die hard fan.
I'm with DB on this one. Batman is more complex of a character. He also has the best secret identity of them all. He's frickin Billionare Bruce Wayne.

fenrir1887
02-11-2010, 09:21 AM
DB, I hate to disagree. First off, the only reason I believe Superman is far better than that is because unlike Batman, he does not have a vendetta against crime. Secondly, Superman's worst failing is believing he can save everyone at any time. JLA: Pain of the Gods established that. Batman's own worst failings include not always trusting his allies in the Bat-Family as the group is usually called. Secondly, Luthor is not as over the top as you might believe. Mxyzptlk is far more over the top. Plus, if Luthor didn't have his rock, he's as completely helpless as any other human being.

I can find tons of Marvel characters that suck but they aren't mainstream like Superman or Wonderwoman. My point is DC only has one character that I can think of who isn't corny, Batman. Well, that's if you don't count the Adam West version. From my perspective DC is mainly old school corny characters whos names almost always end in man because the writers have no creativity.

But Daredevil and Hulk are just plain awful.I'm not going to debate which movies are more full of fail. When I talk about characters I mean the comic book versions. Movies and TV shows are well known for how they butcher the established storylines and characters. To me they don't count techincally, they're just fluff for casual fans.
That being said I think it's safe to say that Hulk and DareDevil are miles better than that steaming pile of a movie they called Superman recently. What other good DC movies come out recently? Oh yeah, Batman, their only good character:lol:

Aqua-Man and Superman are what DC comics really push out the door, Howard the Duck is not on Marvel's "A-List." Case in point, the ridiculous and corniest of Marvel comics heros and villians are probably on the bottom of the totem pole of importance, unlike DC comics where thats pretty much all they know and publish.

Let me ask you this question. Why is Marvel taking so long to clean up a mess it should have cleaned ages ago? The whole simultaneous universe idea died with DC's Crisis on Infinite Earths. DC is working the whole Blackest Night storyline in ways Marvel never could. DC is not the slowest to change. Marvel is. This is what makes DC a fine company in its own right. Coupled with the fact Marvel just got bought up and DC didn't tells you who the sinking ship really was.

It wasn't like Marvel was going under or anything, Disney wouldn't have bought them if they didn't have anything going for them. It wasn't a cheap buy either 4.24 billion dollars is how much Disney paid to get Marvel. Plus here's a fact, " Marvel has since become the largest American comic-book publisher, surpassing its longtime competitor DC Comics (http://retrouprising.com/wiki/DC_Comics).." Marvel Comics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
(While I'm sure someone will point out that my source of my quote comes from wikipedia and how information is sometimes faulty from there I'll also argue that on DC Comic's wiki page there is no where that says that they are the world's largest publisher of comic books. They're not denying that they've been beated by the better Marvel Comics. So this isn't a he said/she said arguement.)
Read it and weep.

Surpassing? I don't think so. Marvel hasn't yet produced a miniseries on the order of Final Crisis. Secondly, if Marvel had surpassed DC, DC's not showing a decrease in readers. Normally, the competition between them would tell in the numbers of readers. Even if you are right, it's not by much. DC consolidated its characters in one universe so it's not going anywhere anytime soon.

I'm not sure what a miniseries has anything to do with this. pretty sure if all the characters are lame and cheesy than the series will fail too. marvel doesn't have to put all their eggs in one basket for a miniseries, they have a lot more going for them than super friends b.s.

Here's the problem with the statement AK Bullet Storm. Most of DC's characters couldn't be considered cheesy by any standards. one case in point is the Green Lantern. Name 1 marvel character who has the same power as GL.

you're correct, no marvel character has the same power as GL. that doesn't mean its a good thing though, i think GL is lame. he wears a little ring that gives him powers like forming a giant baseball bat to hit his opponents with? tell me that's not cheesy. surprised his ring wasn't one of the ones that help form Captain Planet.

Okay, but who has the Spectre's exact powers? No one. Marvel may have Wolverine and DC doesn't have a character like him, but Marvel could never get away with creating characters similar to any of DC's characters. Copyright laws would be enforced for both sides.

How about Deadpool and Deathstroke? DC made there's first but they never tried to stop Marvel from making Deadpool. Kind of funny how Deadpool is arguably more popular even though DC had a huge head start.
Btw AK Bullet Storm is right, Green Latern is one of the corniest DC characters. In the future you might wanna find a better example.

Dude, from here on out, I have one name for you that is cheesier than GL and he's supposed to be that way: Mxyzptlk. Try pronouncing that. Secondly, if you hadn't noticed, the Green Lantern may appear to be corny, but you try fighting the legions of undead Black Lanterns and survive. Corny or not GL takes his job seriously, something only Deathstroke shares. Finally, if you hadn't already noticed, DC does not have a character similar to Deadpool. This is why Marvel could create him.

Maybe you're in denial but the rest of the world can see the obvious similarities between Deathstroke and Deadpool(There names are Slade Wilson and Wade Wilson btw). Hell they even had a cross over encounter because of that comparison. Yes they're not 100% the same but it's close enough.
I can tell you care about this a lot more than I do. You may not see it but DC is seen as old school and corny by a lot of people. We won't agree on this so it's pointless to go back and forth. I'm glad you enjoy it though.

No similarity at all, DB. First off, Deathstroke takes his job seriously, Deadpool does not. Deathstroke fights with 90% brain capacity at all times making him far more dangerous than Deadpool. Plus, Deathstroke is blind in one eye, hence his mask. Deadpool has a healing factor. Plus looking back at Deadpool's history, Wade Wilson is just an alias! Even Deadpool doesn't know what his real name is. The only reason it's seen as corny and old school is because it's older. Yes, I do care because I read both and it's obvious to me both companies have different strengths. Marvel's biggest one is the kids it seeks out. Aside from Elektra, Marvel's target audience is the younger readers. DC has not suffered loss of readership, so there are still people who prefer DC to Marvel.

And DereDevil is full on blind, yet is a highly effective fighter.

No similarity at all, DB.
Yeah none at all! I guess that's why Deathstrokes wiki article has this in it-
Another Marvel Comics character having many similarities to Deathstroke is Deadpool (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deadpool). Both have similar costumes, professions, rhyming names (Deathstroke is Slade Wilson while Deadpool is Wade Wilson), and similar code names (Death=Dead, you do a "stroke" in a "pool"). However, the two have completely different personalities with Deathstroke being a brilliant cutthroat mercenary whereas Deadpool is a sarcastic, possibly insane "merc with a mouth" (but they still have their jobs in common).
Also this entry on the Marvel Wikia(I bet the DC one has a similar entry)-
Deadpool clearly bares a lot of unmistakable similarities to Deathstroke (http://www.dcdatabaseproject.com/wiki/index.php/Slade_Wilson_%28New_Earth%29); Deadpool commonly uses the name "Wade Wilson", similar to "Slade Wilson", Deathstroke from the antimatter universe appears and has similar characteristics related to Deadpool (such as Deadpool's "merc with a mouth" wisecracks, a black spot on his mask over his eye somewhat resembling Deadpool's, the two wear nearly identical costumes, although they have completely opposite attitudes. While this character didn't seem to be as skilled at fighting as Deathstroke, his healing factor seemed far more effective, with Slade becoming annoyed at how hard he was to kill). This character tries to introduce his name multiple times but is always interrupted. The most he was able to get out was "Dea-". It could be implied Deadpool is the Marvel counterpart of Deathstroke, who was created 11 years earlier. Marvel seemingly acknowledged this in the Cable/Deadpool series, where Deadpool sometimes answers a letters column. Deadpool claimed that he didn't want to be in a Marvel/DC crossover, because people might mistake him for a certain DC character. The two of them actually met during a Mr. Mxyzptlk-influenced crossover event, in which the two of them fought with conflicting contracts to both kill and save Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne.
So yeah I guess the similarity is pretty well accepted.
Either way, this debate has gotten too serious. .
You are correct sir.

Okay, so I was wrong on the name bit. But it says here he is fluent in multiple languages, uses a teleportation device to get out of danger, and most times uses a combination of guns and blades doing his missions. Unlike Deathstroke, Deadpool will occasionally work with others. Deathstroke operates alone primarily. Deadpool has no one favorite target. Deathstroke makes it his mission to destroy the Teen Titans. Plus Deadpool has an immunity to most poisons. DareDevil can not fight Deathstroke and hope to win without aid. Why do you think Deathstroke is so dangerous to tackle alone.

I hate being wrong most of the time, but this doesn't really count for hating it. BUT, similar or not the similarities end there. Besides, I still think Deathstroke would do what no man can and that is outfight Deadpool. Besides, what differentiates the characters is their attitudes anyway you look at it. So, I'm conceding at this point, but not on the other.

Fenrir you're splitting hairs about this. The point I'm trying to make is the majority of comic book fans realize that Deadpool is very similar to Deathstroke. Similar does not mean exactly the same. Also you shouldn't be fighting this, it helps your case since I'm saying Marvel basically copied a DC character.
I linked Wikipedia because it's a well known resource, it's more accurate then you may think. I also link the Marvel Wiki, that is probably the most accurate because it's updated and maintained by super comic book nerds. If someone tried to post inaccurate info it would be noticed and fixed.
Go browse the site yourself and see if it stands up to your scrutiny. I'm willing to bet you won't find any misinformation.
Marvel Comics Database (http://marvel.wikia.com/Main_Page)
Same goes for the DC one. I never check it so I can't verify it with experience but I'm willing to bet it's just as good.

I finally saw this movie on DVD today. I wasn't totally impressed to be honest. I don't know why, I just didn't like it that much. The actor (Andrew Garfield?) who played Spiderman did an ok job. I didn't think it was the best, but it was probably better than McGuire's. It was still a pretty good movie, just seemed unrefined and rushed a little to me. The Lizard wasn't as cool as I thought he was going to be. Green Goblin was better imo. I thought he would be Bane-like but Bane was a lot better. I'd still give it like a 6/10 though. I probably won't be watching it again though.
