The year 2010 is almost over, and that means it's almost time for the annual RU awards.
This thread is where you can NOMINATE (NOT VOTE) users to received the following awards. Remember that nominations must be based on events for 2010 ONLY. Of course, the year isn't over yet, so if something happens between now and January 1, 2011 that you feel is worthy of a nomination, feel free to add it.
Best Gamer - This is, in your opinion, the best overall game player for the year, whether he/she consistently placed high scores, or beat hard games,
this player was a force to be reckoned with in the arcade in 2010.
Best Mod - This is the moderator who you think was the most helpful, who you could count on to help you solve your problems the most.
Trophy Thief - This is the player who consistently steals trophies from you and everyone else, who you expect to find the PM from saying "Your score was beaten by XXX".
Trophy Defender - Opposite of a trophy thief, this is a player who's score you keep on beating, only to have him/her come back and post a higher score constantly.
Best Forum Participant - This is the user who you think made the forums
the most entertaining and lively.
Best Newcomer: The new member (must have registered in 2010) who you think made the biggest positive impact to the RU forums or the arcade.
Retro Uprising All Star - To the member whose contributions in the arcade, forums, and chat room have made RU a better place. This person is the Sean Connery of RU, they set the gold standard in skills, wit, sportsmanship, and intellect.
Most Impressive Mastery - This is the player who beat that game that you thought couldn't be beat, but then someone did it anyways, sending your jaw dropping to the floor. Feel free to nominate one of your masters even if you do not think you will win.
Most Impressive Score - This is the high score that you think is the most impressive overall for the year, a score that in your opinion will stand for a very long time. Feel free to nominate one of your scores even if you do not think you will win.
Worth repeating: Remember that nominations must be based on events for 2010 ONLY.
The following two awards are automatic and will be determined when January 1 rolls around.
Highest Rated Post (automatic)
Biggest Donor (automatic)
On January 1, 2011 this thread will be closed, and then we'll get to actual voting for each award.
Who will come out on top of this year's RetroUprising awards? We'll see.
Happy nominating and good luck to all candidates!
-=EDIT=-
Retro Uprising All Star should not take into account mod duties. Mods are eligible but for this category just judge them on their site participation as a normal user.
You can nominate yourself for any award. Especially for Most Impressive Mastery and Most Impressive Score because there are probably several great scores that will be overlooked unless you post your own.
Because Tenser and Kong are the admins they are not eligible for these categories.

- Tails always tries to help wherever he can.
Trophy Thief - Dojah
- Sadly Dojah is not on much anymore, and it's sometimes easy to forget what happened in the earlier parts of the year, but since this is about the whole year, I think Dojah definitely takes the award without question.
Trophy Defender - Seahawk and Dojah
Best Forum Participant - Dudebro, JoeGrotowski, Jozman, and Stevencassidy13
Best Newcomer: Elrod.
- Elrod has done some great things since his time here, and I know there will be more great things in store for the future.

Best Gamer - Winnebagel, Agnostic79, Seahawk, and Josephjo

Trophy Defender - Dojah, Seahawk and Winnebagel
Best Forum Participant - Dudebro, Winnebagel, Jozman and JoeGrotowski
Best Newcomer: Elrod

Retro Uprising All Star - Dudebro, Tenser, Winnebagel and Seahawk

Best Gamer: wb,sh,ea,sc13
Best Mod: sc13 obviously, tails, sabby, db, sh, jozz... probably sabby though.
Trophy Thief: runhippierun, he took 2 from me so hes my vote, feel free to veto his nomination if you think he is not worthy, and sc13
Trophy Defender: n/a what I wants, I takes so... sc13
Best Forum Participant: jim, db, sjb, ten, sc13
Best Newcomer: elrod, enemyace, and sc13
RU ALL STAR: sc13
Most Impressive Mastery: enemyace for cisco heat, sc 13 for whatever I got credited for, I never submitted
Most Impressive Score: SH's 1943, SH's flicky, jake whatshisnuts's bubble bobble, sc13's 1943k 3
(all votes subject to change)
So looking back, I don't like the categories. There should be more that cater to the less than obvious nominations. I'm just thinking about members that I value juat as much and sometimes more so. Maybe next year we could include user specific categories, for example Wolfman for his active chat or whatever.

Best Gamer - Winnebagel - I haven't been here very long but from my experience he is number 1 on the site for a very good reason. :)
Best Mod - Stevencassidy13
Trophy Thief - Josephjo - Great rivalry there. Have had a lot of fun defending from him and pushing myself further.
Trophy Defender - Winnebagel. He always seems to come back when I do take trophies from him.
Best Forum Participant - There are so many I don't know who to pick.
Best Newcomer: ChrisP and EnemyAce. Both great guys. ChrisP we need to find a way to get you a new PC so you won't ever have to hear your scores submissions weren't counted for low FPS.
Retro Uprising All Star - Winnebagel and Dojah. Both these gentlemen have been very welcoming to me since I got here. Both real Class Acts all the way. It is refreshing to see gamers who are on the top of the pile and don't act like Jerks about it.
Most Impressive Mastery - Winnebagel 1945k III. I wasn't here when this happened but having a quick look at the game and it starts out hard and doesn't let up. It's easy to see why others picked this Mastery.
Most Impressive Score - Seahawk - Speed Coin. Having been involved in the round this game was played in and having played this game a lot in a short period of time, this score by Seahawk blew me away. This game messes with your sanity and Seahawk was on the ropes going into that round and he more than rose to the occasion where others might have been taken out.

There's always next year! ;)
Btw guys this topic is for nominations not voting remember? There's really no need to repeat names since you can only be nominated once.
On a related note I'd like to denominate myself for Trophy Defender. Any old scores I have are likely only still mine due to lack of interest not tenacity on my part. Also, my oldest score was beaten recently and I didn't even bother playing the game again and I deleted the PM. Sorry to be a downer cam, thanks for the thought though.

You bring up a good point. No one should feel like they need to be nominated for their contributions to be appreciated. As much as we try to fight it this is a popularity contest and we all know those are seldom fair or accurate. No offense to anyone nominated or the contributions that got them there.

That's why I was saying we should diversify our categories, to include the broadest range of potential candidates.
And seriously:
Best Gamer
Trophy Thief
Trophy Defender
Best Mastery
Most Impressive Score
Couldnt these have been boiled down to just 2 or 3, and open up more room for some more interesting categories? I don't know about you but I couldnt care less who the best trophy defender is, and on top of that just about everyone will have a different answer depending on what games they enjoy.

Then do something sensible like Demon Mask and Tenser and don't nominate anyone at all for those categories (instead of nominating yourself for everything). Only follow what interests you. For the record I don't care about best newcomer or forum participant, but that's just me. You can't please everyone.

Personally I could care less about the awards all together, but I would prefer if they were broader categories so that every active member could be at least nominated for something. That was my point, I wasnt complaining, I was trying to start a discussion so that maybe next year we could have more people included.
The site is supposed to be about fun for everyone, not a social climbing competition.
And for the record, this is based on looking out for all the valued members on the site so that they don't feel left out watching a contest made by the big dogs for the big dogs, from the sidelines.

@steven- For the record this has been open to suggestion since the first time we did it. If you have a suggestion let's hear it. As you know there's no set in stone rules about this so we'll just keep tweaking it until we get it right or close enough for everyone.

I know I should have spoken up earlier on the subject, like I said I was busy and didnt have time to think about it. I'm not trying to undo any of the work that has already been put into it, I'm just thinking about next year. A few categories of the top of my head:
Youngest Member
Oldest Member
Best Taste in Video Games
Memeber that trolls the most

Best Video Game Story
Best Game Reviewer

You're beginning to make a lot more sense now. After reading your first few posts I wondered if you were anti the awards because you hadn't been nominated for enough!:p
I'm all for involving more people that may feel left out if the awards are predominantly all about what's gone on in the arcade. The more the merrier as these things are usually just a light hearted look back at the year. Hopefully if the awards you've mentioned get listed then a lot more of the 'non arcade active' peeps can feel part of this.
FWIW I'm glad R.U has an annual awards as they can be fun. Maybe there should be a few more light hearted categories such as funniest/grumpiest poster etc. I can't believe anyone on here takes these awards too seriously. Do you honestly think if W.B or Seahawk won best gamer they'd spend the whole year reminding everyone? Looking back at last years thread there were a lot more catergories that haven't been mentioned yet. Maybe now you've spoken out a few more will be added. There's plenty of time yet til January.
And for the record, this is based on looking out for all the valued members on the site so that they don't feel left out watching a contest made by the big dogs for the big dogs, from the sidelines.
Based on this there is another award that could be added but I think it's in the bag.:p

I like your ideas Steve. Oldest member would be a one time deal though. Best Game Reviewer would really help with boosting that part of the forums. We should try and stay away from negative awards though.
How's about these ideas?
Most Games Played: the member who's played the most games total in RU
Most Helpful Tips and Tricks: the one who's helped the most with tips and tricks. (would also boost that section)
Won't you be my neighbor?: the member who puts the most effort in getting new member more active with forums and games and brings in new members.

I don't remember seeing that. Maybe I just missed it. I like the idea of having broader categories myself since RU is such a diverse place, and people visit for different reasons.
So Seahawk, would it be ok to add a few more awards to the list? I think we got some good ideas.

Sure, there's still a month in the year so we have time. But if we do this I think it will be a good idea if the current nominations thread is closed.
Let's do a quick vote.
Should we add more awards or keep it the way it is now?
If we decide to revise it let's try and make it final this time.

I say make it the best it is.. the best it was.. and the best it will ever will be.
What about one for those who tend to lay low key in the background but do a lot? Example would be Sabby and Tiamat at one point.
I say revise. And to everyone, please feel free to input your ideas and opinions. The more people who are involved the better :)

I don't think we should add a bunch of new categories just for the sake of adding more stuff.
"Best Reviewer" or "Best Review" or both would be a good addition.
"Most scores submitted" or "Most Masters" or "Most Game Club Points" or "Most Time Spent submitting scores" could be automatic awards.
"Most top 10 scores" could also be automatic but it would be for all time, not just 2010.
"Most Helpful Tips and Tricks" There was 4 submissions this year. I don't think that is enough to have a competition.
Combining Trophy Thief and Defender makes some sense to me.
"Most Active in Chat"??
The idea about having an award for the Tips and Tricks is to provide an incentive to actually putting work into creating and making the Reviews forum more active.

I like all these. They would all be good additions IMHO.
I do think that Trophy Thief and Defender should still be separate though. The reason I think this is that there are some people who just take all the scores they can without ever taking lost ones back. That is different than taking back every one lost.

I'm more interested in those for reference in future contests.
Then maybe this should be a 2011 award.
agreed. but is should be promoted or else nobody will know about it.

been through this before. Better to see 100 pts rather than 0 pts. Besides, this would allow for bigger odds on stealing and defending trophies IMO
Well, I just think it floods the board, but to each their own. I just don't think we should award a badge just for flooding. Now do what Elrod does, that is great to see. he plays it, and he does his best.
But best new game and contest game.are we going to give the winning game a badge???That would be interesting with a new category on the front page with most liked contest games of 2010.

I like the idea of Best Reviewer/Best Review as a category.

Time to get back to work on this.
So far, I see only a few good ones that don't sound automatic.
Best Game Reviewer - Self explanatory
Most Active Member- This award goes to who has no life ;) who is most active on RU, who you see logged in all the time. Maybe it should replace All-Star. Or maybe it is covered by All-Star already. Discuss.
Most Helpful Member - I'm thinking we should cancel Best Mod and replace it with this one.
The New Year approaches fast, so lets keep this discussion going if you want some changes.

Besides the automatic ones that Kong suggested here:
"Most scores submitted" or "Most Masters" or "Most Game Club Points" or "Most Time Spent submitting scores" could be automatic awards.
I like the idea of Most Active, but I don't think it should replace All-Star.
I also like the idea of Most Helpful Member, but I also don't think it is quite exactly the same thing as Best Mod.
Mods should not be eligible for Most Helpful Member. I think it's a good idea to add.

I agree. I think they should be separate categories and Mods should not be eligible.

Officially, I'm adding
Best Game Reviewer
Most Active Member
Most Helpful Member (non mods only)
due to popular demand to the list. Best Mod stays as a separate award.
Best/Worst Contest Game isn't being added, this could be handled by a poll or in the contest thread after each contest.
No more new awards will be added.
Nominations are open until January 1st, feel free to keep them coming or revise until then.

Best Gamer - stevencassidy13, for survive alone much of the last tag-team tournament. And Josephjo, my good amigo, for kicking my butt almost every time we compete...
Best Mod - I cannot choose one. All are thoughtful and helpful.
Trophy Thief - Elrod.
Trophy Defender - Seahawk. Is extremely difficult to take a trophy from him; and, if you succeed, he'll do everything to get it back... fast!
Best Forum Participant - samejamesbond and Dudebro.
Best Newcomer - Elrod and Josephjo. Great players, excellent people.
Retro Uprising All Star - Winnebagel.
Most Impressive Mastery - sabby, playing Logic Pro. That was great!
Most Impressive Score - Seahawk, playing Speed Coin. He should be practicing yoga, or, otherwise, be incredibly determined to get the score he did.

Being new I left this to the last minute to have a decent sampling to nominate from.
Best Gamer Winnebagel, he's number #1, he's not arrogant about it, enough said.
Best Mod They all seem dedicated but Jozman has been the most helpful to me thus far.
Trophy Thief Seems bias but seeing he joined this year Elrod has stolen a ton of trophies.
Trophy Defender Seahawk doesnt let any of his hardware leave for long. Must also say he's one formidable player at shooters.
Best Forum Participant Sezthemank seems to bring alot of color to the forum.
Best Newcomer me.............................no its Elrod heh
Retro Uprising All Star Winnebagel
Honorable mention to Josephjo as the guy who space aliens in video game land fear the most. He holds almost all the records of this genre is seems.

@ChrisP: You yourself know that the activity indicator is broken.
Yeah, considering how my Activity jumps from 50-100-50-etc constantly XD I just did it on whoever I see around most of the day :p
The activity bar isn't broken. Everyone's activity fluctuate so each person's % fluctuates. It works.

I say it's broken! >:(
Slime Slayer
12-31-2010, 12:53 PM
It's broken in some ways, I'll maintain a high percent even if I log on to the site 6-7 times for 1 or 2 minutes a day. It seems to be based on how often you log in rather than how long you are logged in.
Dudebro
12-31-2010, 04:24 PM
Not true. I only actually log in once a day and I leave the site open the rest of the time. It may not be 100% accurate but it does the job well enough I think.
sabby
12-31-2010, 04:36 PM
There must be something else involved with it too. I have it online for over 9 hours a day, five days a week and my percentage is really low.
I notice my percentage go down when I don't post as often. DB is should usually be at 99% and up due to his constant banters...err collective insight and gracious comments. Also playing games often boosts your activity I think.
Dudebro
12-31-2010, 04:47 PM
Yeah I know I'm not a good measure of if this works on not, thanks for pointing that out though Joz. :(
I ment no offence buddy. Got nothing but love for you homie. Now come here and give me a hug :cat:
Dudebro
12-31-2010, 05:00 PM
Not to continue this derail even further but what does the cat have to do with a hug?
Just trying to cheer you up :p
It doesn't measure activity in games, just the forum and other parts of the site. And it doesn't measure time, just actions. Number of times you search for new posts, or make a post, or send a PM, or look at someone's profile etc. It looks at the last 28 days of activity and gives one person 100% and everyone else is compared to that person to get their percent.

This is how many scores each mod approved last year. It is not very accurate, it was only tracked for the last couple months of the year and for part of that time it wasn't tracking everyone correctly. But it gives a general rough idea of who is approving your scores. The first number is how many scores they approved. The second is how many score movies they watched from start to finish to verify no cheats were used.
