You know my xbox that was just... brutally broken and couldn't read discs?
Well, I guess EVG people may or may not know, I was really bored tonight and didn't feel like doing anything, except I wanted to play TS3, SSX Tricky & Counter Strike. I figured, what do I have to lose, the Xbox is just sitting there on display not usable...
I went to youtube and searched "Xbox disc read fix" or something, found a tutorial, searched for tools I needed, Allen wrench, Screwdriver, magnet... I've got to tell ya, "Microsoft really did not want you opening it, They first off, made it allen key screws, they hid the screws under the 4 rubber grip... thingies and stickers! jeez! so after finding all that, opened the sucker up and yellow-ish dust flew out. I had a suspicion that my old dog had peed on the Xbox... yuck!
After taking a rag to the loads of dust in the console, I followed the next step and found yet a different screw to reach deep, deep down into a hole to remove 2 screws, Needed a magnet here.
I unplugged the two wires attached to the disc drive and then had to unscrew two more screws... Opened the disc drive up... The lens reader was in a pool of dust... you'll never guess what color the lens was... yellow...
I cleaned out all of the dust... again and took a Q-tip to the lens... it came out blue... umm...
After all that, I slapped everthing back together carefully and fired it up... first thing I got was the disc read error... opened it and closed it, it fired up and no lag whatsoever, I then tried a really dirty and scratched up disc, it worked perfect!

Good job Cameron. Like you said you didn't have much to lose but either way opening it voided any kind of warranty you might've had, just so you know.
About the yellow dust I doubt it was dog piss. I've never heard of urine turning into anything resembling dust. More likely it was actual dust sucked in by the Xbox and something(rug, furniture) has some yellow material that colored it. In the future you could try buying a can of compressed air and blowing the dust out, depending on how accessible the disc reader is. Also it's best to get it off the ground or ground level if possible. I keep mine about three feet off the ground and so far so good.
That's AWESOME! I did that to my first xbox thinking that was the problem but then I voided my warranty and had to buy a new one. Glad it worked for someone!
Thanks Riesen, It was pretty hard... and pathetic that they were hiding screws and making it "allen key" screws... just ridiculous, probably because they want me to pay the 80 buck fix up on it...

Dude, $80 to repair? Last week I went to Game Stop and saw one for $30.
exactly that's why I said, not much to lose, if I broke it, I could just buy one for 30 bucks
@SJB didn't have to reply in my above post, had to give my mom a birthday card... anyways, everyone liked the dog still (especially me) except my dad, he was 9... uhh he purposely ticked my dad off for some reason, yet he liked the rest of us. My parents gave him to their friend who used to be a police dog trainer.
well done macguyver....i was going to ask if that was the original xbox or 360. now that you have some experience cracking one of those bad boys open, you might want to consider getting a mod kit for the xbox.
I found about 14 games, SSX Tricky was one of them, Man do I love this game!
SSX Tricky & Timesplitters are the only new games I can say I like a lot...
If you're thinking of modding an Xbox360 just be aware that connecting it online WILL eventually get your console banned. If you're talking about just Xbox then go for it since it's a dead system.
the original did support xbox live, i'm not sure about it now since they ran the update for xbox live earlier this year. either way, there is no reason to hook an original xbox up to the internetz.
my bro's xbox is modded, playing burns is cool, so if you want a little project to work on, go ahead and do it.
