I think the two are about equal on animation quality. Both have shit-tier and god-tier studios. I guess I wont vote for either.

The reason I prefer Japanese animation is generally three fold:

1. Anime tends to be more linear and narrative driven and less episodic. North American animation tends to be more episodic.

2. Anime tends to have well defined series. Most anime averages about 12 episodes total. This holds true no matter how popular a series is, with very few ever seeing a second season. This means the pacing for the overall narrative is much more quickly paced.

3. Most North American animation that I've seen tends to be comedic and aimed towards being family friendly. Very seldom will a North American animation approach subjects like rape, genocide, infidelity, and the like.
