Shining Force II

Shining Force II is the sequel to Shining Force: Legacy of Great Intention. It plays mainly the same as it's predecessor but it does have some slight differences.

Controls:

D-pad: Moves your character.
A and C: Action buttons. C is the button you'll want to use.
B:Cancels actions or speeds up conversations

Menu System

While Exploring
While in towns, pressing A or C brings up a menu with 4 options:
  1. Talk: Talk to the person right in front of your character
  2. Magic: Use magic. Only Detox and Egress can be used outside battle
  3. Search: Look in barrels and chests for items
  4. Item: Brings up the item menu which has it's own submenu
  • Equip: Equip desired weapons and rings
  • Give: Transfer items from one character to another(they do not have to be in your current party)
  • Drop: Get rid of the item
  • Use: Use an item
In battle
The menu system in battle is slightly different
  1. Stay: Stay where the character is and end the turn
  2. Item: Same as in exploration mode though now you can only transfer items if you are next to that character
  3. Attack: Attack an enemy. Is auto-selected when you are in attack range, though you can choose to stay instead.
  4. Magic: Use magic spells. Each has a different range you must learn
Special Battle menu
There is an extra menu in battle mode. While it is your turn press B and you can move the cursor around the map. This allows you to:
  1. Check status of your own and enemy characters: Highlight a character and press A and you can see their stats and what they are carrying
  2. Map: Putting the cursor over any empty square on the map and pressing A will show you a zoomed out map of where your army is as well as the enemy
  3. Options: Allows you to change some things like text speed, etc
  4. Save: Allows you to save mid battle though it will end the game right there are and go back to the witch screen. You will resume exactly where you left off in battle
Points of interest in Towns
Priests: Just like the first game, you will visit these guys a lot. They can raise downed characters for a price, heal poison and curses, promote characters, and save your game.(Peter and Lemon will resurrect themselves if they fall in battle, saving you gold)

Shops: Buy, Sell, and repair weapons and medical supplies

As always wander around and talk to everyone. They may be the key to you advancing, finding treasures, or finding new characters

Battles
Just like SF1, all battles are preplanned, always in the same locations, and always have the same number and types of enemies.

The order which people move is based on their agility and anyone can move at any time based on their agility until everyone on the map has moved. It can alternate every turn between you and the enemy, or you can move several and they can move several in a row. Do not move weak people out front expecting you can just cover them up because you might not be able to before the enemy moves.

Bosses can sometimes go twice in a row. They can also regain health in between turns. Take note of this

Characters have a set amount of squares they can move based on the MOV stat. Be warned terrain effects how far everyone can move(except those who fly)

Land Effect: the higher the percentage, the more effect it has on both attacking and defense. When attacking and the % is high, you will do less damage and miss more often. When the % is high and you are defending you are at an advantage. Magic is not effected by the land effect.

Battles end when:
  • All the enemy characters are defeated
  • The Boss enemy is defeated(battle ends immediately even if there are other enemies on the map)
  • Bowie dies. If Bowie dies you go back to the last town you were in with 1/2 your gold but you don't lose any experience gained
Exploration
Unlike SF1, in SF2 you have more freedom to move around the world map. However, this can cause you to enter some battles out of order, and you will most likely not be leveled properly to handle it. If you enter a battle where all of a sudden you are doing pitiful damage and taking tons of damage you jumped ahead. Egress out and go a different direction on the world map. It's only really a problem in a couple of areas.

Leveling
Here is where SF2 differs from SF1. You must be at least level 20 to level. Also, some characters have 2 promotion options if you have a specific object(ie vigor ball). Each option path has positives and negatives I'll leave for you to figure out which is best for your playing style(ie priests can become Vicars or Monks(with vigor ball)

Again, there is a debate over when to promote. Level 20 is the earliest but you can level all the way to 40 before promotion. It's up to you when you want to do it though don't promote too many people at the same time to avoid problems

Hidden Characters

Like SF1 there are characters you can miss I will put there name and location like this Name/Location then how to get them

( Click to show/hide )

Turtle with no name(Default is Kiwi)/Granseal: Wandering through Granseal you'll see a turtle in a cage. Take note of him. After the Escape from Galam battle he'll be out of his cage. Talk to him and name him and he'll join.If you do not have him by the time you must flee Granseal he cannot be recruited

May/Ribble: Talk to her after talking to Ribble's elder. She's walking around by the front gate

Rick/Hassan:After fighting Taros go back to Hassan and talk to him

Karna/Creed's Mansion: Through the course of the game you'll get the option to take 1 of the 4 people Creed offers you. Pick whoever you want and when you get the Sky Orb you can come back and recruit the other 3.

Eric/Creed's Mansion:Through the course of the game you'll get the option to take 1 of the 4 people Creed offers you. Pick whoever you want and when you get the Sky Orb you can come back and recruit the other 3.

Randolph/Creed's Mansion:Through the course of the game you'll get the option to take 1 of the 4 people Creed offers you. Pick whoever you want and when you get the Sky Orb you can come back and recruit the other 3.

Tyrin/Creed's Mansion:Through the course of the game you'll get the option to take 1 of the 4 people Creed offers you. Pick whoever you want and when you get the Sky Orb you can come back and recruit the other 3.

Taya/Mitula's Temple: Search the statue in the Shrine

Sheela/Monk Temple: After the air ship crashes walk to the wouthwest and find the temple and talk to her. She is behind the temple

Claude/Tunnel to Parmecia: First you must have found his arm in Moun. Talk to him in the tunel and you'll give him his arm and he'll join as a thank you

Chaz/Yeel: Play the Piano in Yeel then go to the church.

Caravan
During the game you will gain access to the Caravan which will follow you around on the world map. This is like the Nova Q from SF1. It has the ability to cross rocky rivers. When on the world map walk over and and press C. Once inside you can:
  • Store items you do not need at the current moment to free up inventory space
  • Add/remove characters from your party. As you get more than 11 characters they will wait in the caravan
  • Check the status of characters
Secret Villages
( Click to show/hide )
There are 2 secret villages in the game. One is for leveling and one deals with the Mithril you find

After you get the Caravan and travel over the river on the way to Creed's Mansion you'll come across a cave with a sick dwarf in it. Look at the forest to the left and notice one square is lighter. Walk on it to enter the village.

Inside the village to the east is a sort of mini game. Enemies will keep spawning as you move around. Use it to level if you want.

The second one is north of Galam and you'll need the dry stone. Follow the river until you notice it is slightly more narrow for 1 square. Use the drystone and cross to the lighter colored square in the forest.

You've probably come across some Mithril by now and don't know what it's for. Inside is a dwarf who will use the mithril to make the best weapons in the game for 5,000 a piece. There is a catch though. He will make 1 of several weapons for the character you choose, and it's random so if you really want their best weapons you may have to keep reloading until you get what you want.
General Info
As always it's better to egress if you think you're going to lose than to die and lose half your gold

There is a cheap way for healers to gain EXP. Unlike SF1, healers will gain 10exp every time they cast heal or use a medical herb even if the target is at full health. Casting heal every turn gets you exp every turn, unlike other classes.

If you go to fight Taros and he refuses, and the party instantly leaves
( Click to show/hide )
you are missing something important. He will not fight you without it and only it can hurt Taros

Cheat Code
If you want to screw around with the game including controlling all the enemies as well as your own

Config mode: As the Sega logo comes bouncing onto the screen quickly press Up, DOWN, UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT, RIGHT, UP, RIGHT, DOWN, LEFT, UP, B

If done correctly you'll here a fanfare. Hold start as you choose the start or continue a game and as you choose it and you'll get a new set of options

Secret Final Battle

After you finish the game and "Fin" is on the screen wait about 5 minutes. Then the words "...and more?" will appear. Hit A and you'll enter the secret battle against all of the games bosses.

I'll probably play it too. I loved the first one. Is this a direct sequel or does it go Final Fantasy on us?

Me too. I want to play it as well. It looks like the character's name is Bowie in this one? That's too bad, as I wanted to see what happened to Max next.

Re: Shining Force II

If I remember correctly SF2 takes place in the same world on a different continent.

It's never stated that Bowie and Max are related but they may be distant relatives. However based on info gained in the Gaiden games it is possible Bowie is the grandson of Kane from SF1 thus making Max his great uncle(the fact Max and Kane are brothers was left out of the US version of SF1)

None of the characters from 1 show up in 2, though some of them do in some of the Gaiden games.

From wikipedia

Quote:
The English translation of Shining Force has perhaps the most confusing errors and omissions of any translated game in the Shining series save the Working Designs translation of Shining Wisdom. Most notably, the backstory of Max, the protagonist of the game, is entirely left out. The original Japanese script tells that Max has amnesia and was found washed up on the beach by Lowe, who subsequently came to be his best friend.[8] Later, it is revealed that Max is in fact the brother of Lord Kane of Runefaust. All these plot points were lost in the official translation.[5] Curiously, in the official translation Kane still expresses horror that Darksol forced him to fight Max, but without any explanation why.[5]
Numerous lesser errors and omissions occur. For instance, the character Lug is mistranslated as "Luke", which confused gamers when both the correct translation of Lug's name and a completely different character named Luke appeared in Shining Force CD.[9] One character's name is translated as "Kane" in some parts of the game and as "Cain" in others. Also, the spell "Demon Breath" is mistranslated as "Demon Blaze"; though Demon Breath appears in all seven Shining games on the Mega Drive, Game Gear, and Mega-CD, Shining Force I is the only one where it is mistranslated.
The remake, Shining Force: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon received a considerably more accurate English translation. However, since the remake itself contains additions to the plot which contradict the original story,[6] it is not an authentic translation of the original Shining Force.
