Star Fox 64

Because of a 1987 Spectrum game of the same name, the European version of Star Fox became Starwing. That wasn't so bad. But then Star Fox 64 became Lylat Wars, which is about as dumpular a title as Nintendo could have chosen for Miyamoto's cinematic sci-fi shooter, unless somebody honestly thought it was about two ladies fighting over the last box of sanitary products in Boots.

Regardless of the name, this is an unusual Nintendo game. They'd rarely been down this route before (the original Star Fox having been partly developed by UK coders Argonaut) and subsequent games in the series have been farmed out to other studios, often with disappointing results. But Star Fox 64 showed that when they put their top man on the job, they could turn their hand to anything.

The game is designed to be played through from start to finish in one long session. In fact, you can't ever pick a favourite level and just have a quick crack at the high score table - you have to play the entire thing, following secret objectives to open up pathways to areas that only the most dedicated players would ever see, and even then you only get one shot at it. You finish the level and you move on.

It was designed like that to differentiate it from ordinary shooters. Star Fox 64 was always meant to be a theatrical affair, with its lengthy cutscenes and ceaseless in-game chatter, and perhaps a level select option would have detracted from the wider experience.
