"Retro Uprising Duel Challenge Idea"

I've had this idea kicking around in my head for a bit. Competition is what makes this site most thrilling for gamers. Here is a basic breakdown of what I am thinking...

- There will be an official "R.U. Duel Challenge Thread" In this thread one player can challenge challenge another player simply by calling out there name...

Example: "Hey Robot! I'm calling you out buddy!"

Robot has now has 48 hours from the time of the challenge post to accept it. Once Robot accepts the challenge the duels begins and lasts for 48 hours from the acceptance post.

- The Duel will last for 48 hours as stated. During the Duel the opponents will try to take as many trophies from eachother as possible. Players are not allowed to defend their trophies during this period, only take their opponents trophies. At the end of the round the dueller who takes more of the other's trophies is declared the winner.

-Scoring - If the challenger wins, he collects 2 Dueller points. If the person who was challenged wins they collect 3 points. If it is a tie the person challenged collects 1 point.

Rules which will be necessary...

1) If another gamer in RU takes a trophy from one of the duellers during the duel, the trophy is still counted as taken if the dueller beats the top score the opponent had at the commencement of the duel.

2) A player must have a minimum of 25 trophies in the arcade to challenge someone to a duel.

3) If a duel challenge is not answered, no points are awarded to either player.

4) When a challenge is made, a PM will be sent out notifying the player they have been challenged.

- Whats the point of the points? We can make it like the Assasins score badge, a travelling duel badge like a mini fencer or highlander character carried by the high point carrier. Or we could Run the Duel thread for 3 months and declare a winner at the end. It doesnt really matter.

Please use this thread to give feedback, make suggestions, find other rules that will need to be made to cover possible loopholes.

Reminds me of the Defender of the Crown contest.

Instead of playing for a bunch of trophies, DotC was a contest in which the chooser picks a game and both players play for the the best score. We have a new wave of mods so it would be cool to see how it goes.

I like your idea too though because it doesn't just limit challenges against mods.

It doesn't seem to fair if one person has 300 trophies to defend and the other has 30.

I think the games should be selected some other more fair way. Such as:

1. Use the random game challenge in Chat. I can alter it if need be. Both players meet in Chat and select 5 random games together.

2. Use one of these threads or create a new one Game Series - Retro Uprising Both players agree on something such as http://retrouprising.com/video-games...g-games/t7997/ or Movie Tie-ins or Weird Games or you make a list of puzzle games and use that.

3. Make it a 3 man challenge - example:
I post "I am ready for a challenge."
That will make my current high scores the challenge games

I would copy and past all of my high scores here.
The challenge starts as soon as I post my trophies and lasts 72 hours.
Two people must accept my challenge - Acceptance could maybe be done via PM so people don't try to cherry pick their opponents.
If the challenger (me in this example) keeps 90% of his trophies after the 72 hours are up then he wins.
If the challenger fails to keep at least 90% of his trophies then which ever player stole the most scores wins.

4. have a third party select the games.
Example:
Person A posts links to X games. Person A can choose between 1 and 21 games - must be an odd number. Can be any score enabled games.
Person B and Person C accept the challenge.
Person B and Person C have 72 hours from the time the links are posted to set high scores.
Whoever gets the most trophies in those games during the 72 hours wins.
The winner gets 10 points.
To encourage participation:
The person that post the links gets 2 points. If he fails to get two challengers within 72 hours then he gets 0 points.
The loser gets 1 point.

The ideas can probably be improved on but I think it is more fair for both sides to be working from the same list of games.

You mean this Defenders of the Crown? There are a few differences, the biggest one being that the you can challenge non-mods.

Defenders of the Crown sounds fun but not for us non-mods.

Kong makes a good point about trophy count disparity. I thought of this and of the advantage the challenger has in hand picking his opponent. That is why I set a minimum trophy count to challenge and tiered the points awarded to favour a successful defender of a challenge. We could increase the trophy minimum needed to issue a challenge to 50 from 25. That should do it. If someone can lift more then 50 trophies off of you in a 48 hour period (one in which the defender chooses when it begins by his timing of the acceptance) then you deserve to lose the duel and should work on strengthening your scores. You always have the option to ignore the duel challenge if you feel your scores will not hold up. I think we need to keep the duel format as simple as possible for this to be successful.

I have thought of another issue that could come up. If the current Duel Badge holder cannot get anyone to accept his duel or challenge him he can lose the badge without a battle. We could structure it in an Afro Samurai style where only the current leading point holder can challenge the badge holder to a duel for his badge. If the badge holder wins the challengers points reset to zero and he must reclimb the mountain. If the badge holder losers he gives up the badge and starts at zero points in the duel league. What do you think?

I thought about having the defender choosing the game instead of the challenger. That way, the defender gets to pick a game they are really good at. I mean, if you're going to challenge, might as well make it a full challenge.

One more thing, we need a way to force the duel badge holder champ to defend his/her title with some respect to personal schedules. Once the top point holder issues the challenge the champ has 48 hours to accept the challenge or they lose the title. Once they do they can either declare the start time to be "now" or declare any hour in the next 4 days for the championship duel to begin. This gives the champ some more grace time (6 days maximum) then other players to control their duel time as they actually lose the title to the challenger for not responding.

Jeez I said we should keep this simple I hope this is not overcomplicating it lol!

I'm glad you think that, I expected everyone to to complain about losing the badge because they dont have time to defend it but if you decide you want to be the champ then you sign up for the consequences. I think 48 hours is fair. scrap the 4 day extension.

I also like the defender choosing the game. That actually sways the power more in the defenders direction for some players. There are some epic scores that a 2 day duel is not going to surpass.

24 hours is good. This isn't about being fair. It's about being number one and how tough it is to stay on top.

I don't fully understand what Afro Samurai means. The closest thing to something I have seen like that is Evander Holyfields Real Deal Boxing Ľ Genesis which I think could make a good twist. The way Evander works is when you beat someone you gain some points. The more points you have the higher ranked you are. You can only challenge someone that is one or two spots higher than you and you have to accept all challenges.

I think this still has problems. There are only 20 people with more than 50 trophies. Not all of them will want to participate. There will be many people with less than 50 trophies that want to participate. And if Elrod and I compete he has to defend 494 games while I only have to defend 69. Elrod would have to work much harder than anyone else in this contest.

What about this?
Everyone starts at 0 points - ranked 0.
When you win a challenge you gain 2 points.
When you lose a challenge you lose 1 point.
Your rank is determined by your points. Example if Elrod has 6 points. Tenser has 3 points. Dudebro has 1 point. And Robot and I both have 0 points. Then Robot and I are ranked 0. Dudebro is ranked 1. Tenser is ranked 2. Elrod wins with a rank of 3.
You can challenge anyone that is the same rank as you or that is only one or two ranks higher than you. In the example above, I can challenge Robot, Dudebro or Tenser. Dudebro can challenge Tenser or Elrod. Tenser can challenge Elrod. Elrod can't challenge anyone.
If you challenge someone that is ranked higher than you (as opposed to just tied with you) than they have to accept the challenge.
There will be a pool of games maintained in the first post.
Anyone can suggest games to go in to the pool and they will be continually added in.
The person being challenged will have 24 hours to pick 3 games from the pool.
The 3 games are then removed from the pool.
The challenge will end after a total of 48 hours.
The person with highest score in 2 of the 3 games wins.
Whoever is highest ranked and ranked over 15 gets a badge.

Why not make it simpler.

On each person's profile settings, make a user option "Participate in challenges" and "Do not participate in challenges". That way only those who are interested in doing this can participate, and those who don't, don't have to.

Default it to "Do not participate in challenges" when accounts are created.

If a user is set to participate, a button appears on their profile page, labeled
"Challenge to a game" or something like that.

When you hit it, you are sent to a page where you fill in a game ID to challenge that person to. Then you finalize, and the user being challenged gets a PM with the challenge offer.

Here the challenged can either accept or decline.
If you decline, well that's that, nothing else happens.
If you accept, the game goes on for 48 hours, and the person with the highest score at the end of that time period wins. Once challenges are accepted, neither user can back out, no exceptions.

Winner gets 2 points, loser loses 2 points.

Setting up tiers is a bad idea.........anyone should be able to challenge anyone at any time.

This would also be open to any score enabled game, and not just what a select group thinks are competitive games.


This system solves any problems:
People who don't want to participate don't have to.
Both parties have to agree on a single game, preventing any accusations of "This isn't my type of game".
No messy management on a special thread - everything is automated.

Kong I like how you broke it down. I assume failure to answer a challenge is the same as a loss. I think this could work really well and having an ongoing battle will attract more gamers to the site. This will be a grind though so giving a break on it for a month in the summer and 2 weeks at Christmas seems prudent. Otherwise its open season!

Edit- Seahawk just saw your take too, another great concept. The less work for the mods to maintain this the better. Perhaps a hybrid of ideas will be best. We all may have to hammer this at out at the pub over a few beverages. R.U. Convention 2012. If you challenge me to Speed Coin though you will be getting the white flag. lol.

I like Seahawk's idea better. Except I would change that both players have to agree to a game to where the one being challenged gets to pick a game from our entire library. The defender can choose a game to compete for the high score or to see who can master a game faster.
