i love arcade games so much the older games are so much harder like most the games now that are out for all the new consoles 90% of them follow a strict story-line where u cant go wrong tells u how to do everything along the way even gives u strategys any body can really follow and complete those games i dont see what major skills you need to play them but arcade games thats what i think is full of skill and strategy like take donkey kong for instance the first one like i remember when i first played that when i got to the first rivet stage i went up the top like all the other levels and nothing happened i was left wondering what to do if that was the games nowadays a big warning would have came up saying u must release all the rivets to pass the level the timing and thinking u needed for dk, dk jr. pac man ect. was unreal i can spend days playing the old games and still being stuck half way through, wi the new games i havin met a game i couldnt master in two days max not one game obviously there is games that would take longer im just saying all the times i played and thousands of games i have played not one has taking me over two days, the fact remains that they just dont make em like they use too , anyone agree or disagree id love to hear otheres opinions on this
Welcome to RU, Jay. May I call you Jay?
I both agree and disagree with you. Some games are not linear at all these days, and others are painfully linear.
Some games are extremely easy these days, and others are absurdly difficult.
You can't just say all of games today are painfully linear and extremely easy.
It's like saying all arcade games are overly simplistic and shallow, or all PC games have convoluted, broken controls.
Hi 085Jay1991, and welcome to RU, the best site on the net!
I think game difficulty begins with the Gamer themselves, within their own individual strengths and weaknesses.
For example, some people have more patience, some better eye - hand coordination, some better attention to detail, and yet others have phenomenal reflexes.
And then there's Gamers like myself.
Seriously though, what I mean is that I think difficulty is an individual thing.
I would guess that our own High Score Champions Elrod21, Winnebagel, and Dojah may consider some games on RU to be easy, and from their point of view that may be so, given their Gaming ability.
Gamers like myself would probably consider those same games to be quite challenging.
I mean this in a general sense, of course.
For instance, Haunted Castle » Coin Op , I can't get past the first level, so there are genuinely difficult games as well to be sure.
Concerning the newer games I find there to be quite a wide variety of difficulty, {not including the current generation of consoles} but to compare them to the classic 2D retro games is like comparing apples to oranges, in my opinion.
Hard to put into words.
1. Optifine - allows you to tweak display settings and certain game elements giving excellent game performance even on 32 - bit systems. http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/...and-much-more/ 2.Custom NPC's mod - create your own NPC characters in Minecraft.
Fully customizable, meaning you decide everything: type, size, skins {compatible with most skins made for 'Human Male', like Steve, so you can use skins people upload to PMC and other sites}, assign jobs, factions, etc, etc.
All this and it adds numerous items such as weapons, armor, food, quest items, and more. http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/...-npcs-splanmp/ 3.MACE city generator mod - a standalone program which generates worlds with cities. {NOT just random like it says, they're fully customizable with dozens of city options - why do they say random when itisn't?}.
There are 3 basic themes {desert, medieval, and Novv - sort of medieval with lots of detail} and you can insert 1 - 100 cities of your choosing into generated worlds.
Name the world or leave MACE to give it a random name, insert a world seed, tweak the options to make them contain only what you want them to, then create a profile so you can duplicate your favorite cities again later! http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/...ies-generator/ 4. Tale of Kingdoms mod - I consider this to be part mod, part city generator; the mod inserts a medieval style building {into either a new world or an existing save file}called the Guild.
The Guild is the starting point of the RPG aspect of the mod.
NPC's in the Guild inform you that you are the King who must complete certain tasks in order to gain the trust of your people.
Once you gain their trust {by gaining enough in - mod 'EXP', basically} you can then choose the site of your Kingdom, which you provide the raw materials to build.
There are 3 tiers to the Kingdom, expandable as soon as materials become available.
IN CONCLUSION:
These mods used together hold HUGE potential both on or offline and the best part is that you can do what I did:
Use MACE to create a world with a city {or cities}, then install the TOK mod, play to gain the Kingdom, and then uninstall TOK and use the Custom NPC's mod to make your own characters, storyline, whatever!
And in case you were wondering it is possible to have both mods running at the same time, but your custom characters better be tough enough to stand up to the TOK hostile mobs!
i stand by my arguemant ps3 , 360 , wii , everything i have played two days max theres barely any nes snes sega coin op games that i can even complete in that time maybe some zeldas and mega man but like not that many im honestly saying all those new consoles its not challenging its merely getting to the end thats all
I think you're missing one part of modern gaming, multiplayer. Single player games are not the focus of the industry anymore so they get less attention. I think that's why they're getting easier, companies don't wanna risk people getting frustrated with the difficulty and going to play something else. There's lots of difficult multiplayer games because that's the focus of the industry atm.

Easy is not necessarily bad, as DB says, the focus of the industry these days is multiplayer, single player is basically a tutorial for multiplayer anymore. At least in games like Call of Duty. Nothing wrong with that, a primarily multiplayer game doesn't need a strong single player.
Have you played Yakuza 3/4, Metal Gear Solid 4, Devil May Cry 4, Baroque or God of War 3? I've been told those are somewhat difficult. I am a generation behind in consoles and, I've found some quite difficult games on the PS2.

i have mastered all those games except yakuza 3/4 i aint played that , as these games are more difficult than most they are still no challenge in my eyes although i do agree the focus these days is all about multiplayer which is all fine but the fact that you need to play online just for the "right" experience is not good like first off you must have online access and with 360 you have to pay your membership to xbox live i miss the days when you played the games at home and always got the "right" or intended experience ill forever be a gamer of the oldies id give up crystal clear graffics enticing storylines and online multiplayer for the pure challenge of the old games anyday
The biggest point IMO is that the older games mentioned in the original post were coin ops. They were designed to be difficult as it meant the player parted with another quarter if he/she wanted another game. Console games don't necessarily need this level of difficulty as you've already bought the game outright and don't need to continuously pay to play another game.

yes that is true of coin opp but by oldies im including nes/snes sega like megaman x 2 is more dificult than half the games that are out now and megaman x 2 is a pretty standard game , super ghouls and ghosts very hard theres too many to mention and put in comparrison with the new age cames difficulty and skill just doesn compare

I prefer single player games because I have very few friends with whom to play video games.
That said, I'm one generation behind in consoles so, I don't mind.
You've really played Baroque?
Yeah, that one.
It gets difficult later on, or on later cycles/playthroughs.
Not a particularly easy game in the first place. Not painfully hard or frustrating though.
As said before, coin-ops are intentionally hard to keep people pumping quarters into them.
NES games were hard(the ones designed to be hard) mainly because there were no saves(aside from RPG's), and most are fairly short. They wanted to keep people interested and playing them longer. Once you know how to beat them and when and where everything is in every stage the difficulty disappears(for most games)
A lot of console games would be considered much harder than they are if they all had limited continues and no saving like most old school games did.
Limited continues would make current games much more difficult.
Yeah. There is no real penalty for dying anymore in most cases. Now it's you die, pick right up at the last checkpoint or save point and keep on trucking as many times as you need. Not like back in the day where 1 hit killed you and then you start the game over again.
New games can be just as hard, but they choose not to be. People wouldn't buy them.
Here's a challenge: On any modern game, limit yourself to 5 lives. Once you die five times, reset the game and delete your file. I guarantee you will see a giant step up in difficulty of any game.
Difficulty used to be more of a limitation of technology than anything. That and the necessity for coin op games to be hard to make any revenue.
Oh, and here you go, it's Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu, a modern 360 shooting game.
