Original soundtracks

Hello everyone.

One of the things that keeps me going back to play games, especially from long ago, is the soundtrack. I know that modern games have moved on and tend to use professionally recorded pop / techno / rock etc. But older games tend to stick with me for their music as much as anything else.

I wondered if you had any particular favourites? Some of mine include:

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/yzsqx5uXmpA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Instant classic!

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/OBPwfwMiP20" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

In Quartet each level had its own theme intended to convey the emotion of the level (citation at Wikipedia)

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/OJlWEKa70Xg" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Each level in Fantasy Zone also had great lvel-specific music. I also noted that the Japanese TV show Takeshi's Castle used the music from round four in one of its many madcap challenges.

What are your favourites?

Sorry - why don't my vid embeds work? :/

@Kiwi- Not sure what happened with the links there but I fixed them for you. I can delete the embed stuff if you want me to.

Banjo Kazooie, apart from being one of my favorite N64 games, also has one of the better soundtracks for the system.

Re: Original soundtracks

I love 8 and 16 -bit game music, and was lucky enough to come across a link to download literally dozens of NES soundtracks and also quite a few SNES as well.

Nes Snes Soundtracks

Oh sure, some of them are short loops that become annoying after a short time but then there are soundtracks to games like Journey to Silius 58 Game Club Points - October 2012 » Nintendo , which feature longer, more fully - orchestrated songs.

This is not to say I don't enjoy listening to the music from Shadowgate » Nintendo once in a while, even though the songs are not nearly as complex as those from JTS.
Of course this is only my opinion, and does not reflect those of RetroUprising staff, their extended families, or their pets, imaginary friends, etc.

In any event, there are a lot of game soundtracks there at that link so I hope you guys will enjoy as much as I have been!

{link in my post above}
... Perhaps I should have mentioned they're free to download in .zip form?

Just surprised no one has said: 'Thanks for sharing that link, this collection is massive!' or anything to that effect, so I'm assuming it got overlooked.

That is all.

Every time I listen to the Final Fantasy XIII soundtrack, it makes me wish with all my heart that the actual game was anywhere near as well put together.

Re: Original soundtracks

The video game soundtrack I love is the soundtrack to the Point
and Click game Kentucky Route Zero, it really evokes the mood of
being in the middle of nowhere, both the relaxation of the
outdoors and the fear of being alone.

Bioshock Infinite had a beautiful arrangement of the traditional
gospel song "Will the Circle be Unbroken?"

I also really enjoyed the Jazz soundtrack to Gunpoint, it really
matches the stealth gameplay.

Re: Original soundtracks

Get yourself one of these:

(RCA-3.5mm cable + RCA inverters)

and one of these:

(3.5mm-3.5mm cable)

And then you are equipped to record any video game music you want, directly from any console source. Just plug the 3.5mm side into your mic or line in port on your PC! All are available for cheap in any audio cables section in any shop with an electronics section.

Used as an example - the Wii and a Game Boy Color, but any device that outputs analog audio via an RCA or 3.5mm cable will work!

Re: Original soundtracks

Excellent suggestion, Sea!

For most games that would work perfectly, but there are certain games which have enemies that attack relentlessly, making confrontation unavoidable and therefore tainting the purity of the soundtrack {this is not to say that's a bad thing either, only that if you wanted to record JUST the music from a given game certain games make this simply impossible}

Just saying, and by the way I like the ambient sounds of a classic Coin - op arcade once in a while - consisting of pretty much nothing but the attract mode/ gameplay sounds of several games layered on top of each other.
So I'm not ALL just about the music.

That is true. Sometimes you can't avoid it, or you have to get creative in finding a quite place. There are ways around it though, lowering the SFX volume in game settings, finding a sound test, other things.

Here are some samples...

Tetris 2 NES - Multiplayer Song A
Very nostalgic for me because I used to play the game against my grandmother (she loved Tetris) on the summer vacations of old. I think I always lost, she was a pro at Tetris.

Kirby's Dream Land 3 - Ocean Waves
I just like this song, it goes well with all the beautiful backgrounds Kirby's Dream Land 3 has to offer.

Super Mario Galaxy - Koopa's Road
Koji Kondo
I remember my first time getting to the first Bowser stage in Super Mario 64, I ran for the Peace painting blindly and gasped in horror as it changed to Bowser, and definitely did not expect a trapdoor to dump me into the stage before I even reached the painting! Fast forward 12-13 years, listening to this song again was an amazing experience.

Etrian Odyssey III: The Drowned City - Between the Azure Skies and Seas
Yuzo Koshiro
I always love just idling on the menu to listen to this. Personally I think it sounds better coming out of the tiny DSi speakers with no bass support. I love all of Yuzo Koshiro 's FM synth work.

Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu - Tokyo, 2008 A.D.
Manabu Namiki, Azusa Chiba, Yoshimi Kudo
This is the song of the first mission. Don't you just get the feel of flying off into the sun drenched azure skies? The countdown is not part of the song but I left it in anyways.
