Favorite Atari / Arcade games

What are some of your favorite Atari (2600, 5200 or 7800) and Arcade games?

For clarification, those that you would sit in front of your TV for hours trying to beat your last score and coming up with strategies to do so. And for Arcade games, making sure you have enough quarters to finally beat your high score.

Lately I've been stuck in ultra retro mode, really interested in playing games where I don't have to worry about 100%'g it or solving complex puzzles. Just good ol' fashioned beat your high score gameplay.

Heck, why not just make this thread a reminiscing topic!

Re: Favorite Atari / Arcade games

Reminiscing is what us old guys do best; I think I live more in the past than the present, to be honest.

As far back as I can remember I've been addicted to video games, even before I really began playing them.
I would be somewhere like a shopping mall with my parents and would see a random game - I didn't even care what kind of game it was - and immediately wanted to go look at it, watch it, as though I were looking through a magic window of sorts into a different world.
I think it's worth mentioning to people born later on that, back in the 70's, the concept of being able to manipulate pixels on a TV screen was mind blowing to us.

Naturally, when I did get the chance to play a game, I sucked on ice and it was 'Game Over' very quickly, the main reason being lack of hand - eye coordination which I began to develop when my parents bought me an Atari 2600 one year.

I was fairly spoiled as a kid and {over the years} had quite a few games for my Atari 2600 :

Asteroids Atari 2600
Berzerk Atari 2600
Casino Atari 2600
Combat Atari 2600
Grand Prix Atari 2600
Missile Command Atari 2600
Pac Man Atari 2600
Pitfall! Atari 2600
Robot Tank Atari 2600
Space Invaders
Atari 2600
Yars' Revenge Atari 2600

That was a trip down memory lane while looking for those .. I got pretty good at some of them, and my hand - eye coordination finally developed enough to be able to play a Coin Op game once in a while.

Arcade games {condensed list}:

Burger Time Coin Op
Carnival Coin Op
Cheyenne Coin Op
Chiller Coin Op
Crossbow Coin Op
Elevator Action Coin Op
Exerion Coin Op
Gorf Coin Op
Legendary Wings Coin Op
Looping Coin Op
M79 Ambush Coin Op
Moon Cresta Coin Op
Moon Patrol Coin Op
Moon Shuttle Coin Op
Mr. Do! Coin Op
New York New York Coin Op
Night Stocker Coin Op
Phoenix Coin Op
Pleiades Coin Op
Pole Position Coin Op
Qix Coin Op
Radar Scope Coin Op
Rally X Coin Op
Red Alert Coin Op
Rip Cord Coin Op
Rush'n Attack Coin Op
Rygar Coin Op
Sheriff Coin Op
Space Firebird Coin Op
Space Fury Coin Op
Space Invaders Coin Op
Star Hawk Coin Op
Starship 1 Coin Op
Time Pilot Coin Op
Time Pilot '84 Coin Op
UniWar S Coin Op
Venture Coin Op
Wizard of Wor Coin Op

I'm still not so good at most of these, but it's a big thrill for me to be able to bask in their glow, the bright splashes of pixelated colors and also to hear those one - of - a - kind Arcade sounds ..
I know it may sound silly but, often when I'm feeling down and longing for the past when everything was much more simple I visit RetroUprising and give a few of those old games a run in what I like to think of as visiting a giant Arcade.

If I had the money, I would seriously consider having a setup like this:

( Click to show/hide )

It doesn't matter to me if I don't even make it past the first screen; just to see and hear these games is enough to make me happy.

Re: Favorite Atari / Arcade games

Well for me the first Atari 2600 sit in front for hours game was Asteroids. Always trying to score higher on that one when i was younger.

In the Arcade it was probably Starship 1 as my first Atari arcade game though the first arcade game i really remember playing was gunfight.

Re: Favorite Atari / Arcade games

Great list by RU Joe. I'm the same as elrod. For mindless shooting fun, it was Asteroids for me on the 2600, and Chopper Command. Pitfall will always be my favorite, but it takes some time to learn the right path to fully complete the game in under 20 minutes. Thunderground was another off-brand 2600 cartridge I owned and had a lot of fun with.

RU's coin-op list covers it all. Mr. Do, Gorf, both favorites.

Demon Attack! Great game. That and Atlantis killed many an hour when I that was the only console I had. Megamania not horrible, either.

Re: Favorite Atari / Arcade games

I remember this one fateful day, and I will never forget it. A friend of mine got his NES, and his mom, being the very charitable person that she is, decided that a stipulation to him getting the NES was that he needed to give away his old games to his friends. So me and another one of his friends went over to his house. All his games were layed out on the floor, there musta been 40 or 50 of them. We took turns choosing games, it was a dream come true, literally. You guys ever get those dreams where you somehow end up with a huge bounty of awesome or rare/imported video game stuff? Ive had the type of Dream on several occasions that I can remember, but this one time it was real.

I honestly can't remember a single title that specifically came from that haul, but some of my favorites I had were:

Venture: This was really cool, I had always wanted RPG type games, games that were grand adventures you know? I don't remember if thus had the depth and scope that I remember, but it suited me just fine at the time.

Solaris: This one was pretty fun, and had really awesome graphics.

Jungle Hunt: Everyone knows this one.

Donkey Kong: This was my hacking game. Me and my bro used to mess around with improperly inserting the cart to various fine tuned degrees to garble the graphics up. The results were often pretty cool!

Some others I had: Mouse Trap, Ice Hockey, Boxing, Desert Falcon... that's all I can remember off the top of my head.

Re: Favorite Atari / Arcade games

Around 1983 I inherited a 2600 and around 50 games. I don't remember where it came from but I remember playing these the most.

3D Tic Tac Toe - Atari 2600
Berzerk - Atari 2600
Defender - Atari 2600
Ice Hockey - Atari 2600
Maze Craze - Atari 2600
Moon Patrol - Atari 2600
Outlaw - Atari 2600
Pitfall! - Atari 2600
Space Invaders - Atari 2600
Superman - Atari 2600
Wizard Of Wor - Atari 2600
Yars' Revenge - Atari 2600

Around 1985 I inherited a 2-XL Robot plus nearly the entire library from some random old lady and an Intellivision with around 50 games.

I got an SMS for xmas around 1986 and somehow found an old Atari XL. Genesis for xmas in 1990.

I found a pong in an attic in 1990.

I bought an old half broken Atari ST around 1992. You had to spin the disk drive by hand but it worked.

Around 1997 I started collecting old systems from thrift stores. I only remember the 3do.

Around 1999 I lost the entire collection.

Re: Favorite Atari / Arcade games

Did anyone else have to deal with the Asian kids hogging the kiosks? I never got a chance to play any of the games because there was always 5-6 Asian kids playing/waiting for their turn. Thinking back, I'm guessing that the kids parents owned stores in the mall and just let their kids go off during the day. This was a recurring incident, at different times/malls... I just wanted to try out Keith Courage for frig sakes!

I wanted to include this on my list but it belonged to a friend of mine, and we would swap games once in a while .. he had a lot of Activision games, and Demon Attack Atari 2600 was one of them.
Come to think of it, those Activision games were pretty damn good compared to the ones Atari put out.

Was it made of wood?

SC,
you're a lucky guy to get that mega haul of games from your friend.

ON GAME KIOSK HOGGING:

When you have a group of unattended youths {particularly boys} you are almost always going to see undesirable behavior including 'hogging' game kiosks, Arcade games, Pinball machines {do they even exist anymore?} and generally being a nuisance.
Manners, courtesy, and consideration for others {like poor SC's waiting their turn, for example} simply don't enter into it.

Yes, I experienced it myself many times too.
It sucked.

It's no doubt, it was founded by the best devs from Atari who left because they were not being treated as well as they thought they should be.

Re: Favorite Atari / Arcade games

I have never had the pleasure of playing the Atari, but I've got a soft spot for arcade games. Here are the ones that I was actually able to play when I was younger.

Mortal Kombat II was the first one my brother took me to go play.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Centipede
Killer Instinct, the game that made me obsessed with the fighting games
Mortal Kombat III
Knights of the Round, our local Pizza Hut had this and I was able to play it on a couple of occasions.
Yes, there are better games than some of these out there, but these were the ones that really introduced me to gaming beyond an NES.
