The best video game storylines

I love a good story. That's what drew me to games in the first place because in the end a video game is like an interactive story. Most games today play out like big blockbuster movie releases. And some are very well done. Mass Effect is a real good example of good storytelling. But here inside the vaults of Retro Uprising is where it all began.

So what is your favorite storyline in a game. A story that you stuck with until the end. A story that made you really care about your character. I have several but to start with I'll pick:

Ninja Gaiden NES:

The story of Ryu searching for his father's killer is the first NES game I ever beat. It was so damned hard but I just had to see what was going to happen next. This had it all. Swords, magic, romance, demons, and giant castles. It had betrayal, loss, and in the end courage. You can keep your Xbox Ninja Gaiden, here stands the first true bad ass ninja of gaming (sorry Shinobi). So what's your guys favorite game storyline?

Actually, I love it when a ridiculous 'story' is added to apparently justify an orgy of button-mashing and joystick abuse.

Or spinner abuse... you thought it was bat and ball, but no - your Vaus has been warped by someone

Or when the story can effectively be told in 3 seconds:

1999- What appeared to be a harmless meteorite crashing in the Nevada desert had turned out to be Darc Seed, an evil alien creature with horrible powers. By shooting strange magnetic rays, Darc Seed had turned the helpless nation into zombies and brought the Statue of Liberty to life to do his dirty work. These rays also gave him control over many deadly weapons, but none were more powerful than the legendary samurai sword, Shura. When the great head of the samurai, Namakubi heard that the sword had fallen into evil hands, he set off immediately for the United States. For only he possessed the strength and knowledge needed to recapture the magical sword and free the U.S. from the evil clutches of Darc Seed.

Re: The best video game storylines

Assuming this is not retro only:

Walking Dead - You are playing this game for its story. Wonderful story telling.

Bioshock - Chilling and spooky story. Shows that you can make scary games with great storylines.

Kingdom Hearts - Has very bad storytelling, but a fantastic and complex story. Hard to understand everything for casuals but easier for hardcore fans of the series.

Re: The best video game storylines

The Last Story - in the beginning its great, then it has some good character development. However, for a while the story is rubbish, I kept playing it though, and there was one moment that just makes the game. Anyone who's played it knows the scene I'm talking about!

( Click to show/hide )
and at the end the story makes almost no sense, but you're caught up in it all that you lap it all up... or so I found!

I think sometimes the simpler the story, the more effective...

There's an ancient youtube playlist here where the creator talks about the inspiration behind the title:

Always loved the notion of The End vs Game Over as well.

Tales of the Abyss had a much better, concise and grounded story IMO.

Yeah when I was a kid I had no idea what was going on but replaying them over the past couple of years, now it's pretty clear.

Yeah I don't think we can count it, not only is it based on actual history, but the same story can be attributed to many games.

Well it's based on a fictionalized version of history if I remember right so it might kinda count.

Re: The best video game storylines

Metal Gear Solid - even though the entire series is stupid and contrived and redundant, I always find myself incredibly absorbed in the games

Final Fantasy XII - my favorite Star Wars movie

Yakuza - nothing in the series really re-invents the wheel or whatever but the human drama stuff always sucks me in and makes me care about what's going on better than most other games

Earthbound - it's just really good

Re: The best video game storylines

No video game story has ever entertained me quite like Leisure Suit Larry Land of the Lounge Lizards.

Re: The best video game storylines

Off the top of my head...

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic I (and so far II as well)

Final Fantasy V

Final Fantasy VII - Half-so. Parts of the game I could pass up on honestly, but most of it I was really interested in

Pikmin - Sometimes, the best stories is told through little story, setting, and situation. Writing your own story as you go through this is something that makes me love it. That looming legitimate fear of death in a timed situation. Love it.

Conker's Bad Fur Day - Do I need to say anything?

Freedom Fighters - Never even played through it all the way (I wasn't very good at it. Should give it a go now). Watched my brother play through it like it was a movie though. If he played without me watching, I was upset.

SOS - Same as pikmin, on a smaller scale. Only this one provides backgrounds of the characters and yourselve, as you save them, if you save them and has too many varying endings to count based off who you save, what you do, who you save with who, and which of the 4 characters your playing as. This game gives you 1 hour to escape a sinking ship, and provides all this along the way in that span of time. Very replayable just to see all the ways it can play out. One of my favourites on SNES.

Fable

Final Fantasy XII - Yeah, honestly, the story is more of a driving factor for me than the gameplay. Why? I don't know. You're not the most important character, and I like that for some reason, you're just constantly putting yourself into other peoples insane problems, and tagging along. Nice to get that sense that your teammates are probably even more powerful than you, or should be, but you gotta prove yourself. I don't know why this fact interests me, especially since it's exactly what everyone else hates, but I think it's more than that, and I can't really explain it too well. That said, it's been 1 year of playing it infrequently, and I'm 20 hours in, maybe.

Half-Life

Half-Life: Opposing Force

It's Very, Very, Very rare for me that a story is more important than the gameplay of the game, but there has been a few cases for me as well where the story is the driving factor for me. That's Knights of The Old Republic I (& again, so far II). Not that the gameplay isn't good, it's great. I'm just more fascinated by the story. I feel like these games are coming up a lot for me these days haha. Fables probably another one I guess. Kind of half gameplay, half story for that one though.
