The Walking Dead: The Game

Genre: Point and Click Adventure
Rated: M

"It goes to show, people will up and go mad when they believe their life is over."

The Walking Dead Game - Walkthrough Part 1 no commentary episode 1 HD Gameplay - YouTube

The Walking Dead: The Game is a five episode game that takes
place in Georgia, like the television show, in which a zombie
infection has spread beyond containment. The game centers around
main character Lee Everett and Clementine, the girl he's
protecting from the undead.

Story:

Lee Everett is a convicted murderer on his way to prison when the
police car he's in is strikes a zombie and Lee becomes a free
man. Afterwards, he runs into a little girl named Clementine, who
was alone by herself during the start of the apocalypse. The two
forge a strong bond that becomes the focal point of the five
episodes as Lee redeems himself from his past.

After a couple of close encounters with the dead kind, Lee and
Clementine will end up at Hershel Greene's farm and encounter the
first group of survivors that join you on your journey, Kenny and
his family. Kenny is an impulsive working class family man with a
temper that wishes to protect his family from the rising dead and
is one of the major players in this game.

Problems arise when Lee and crew arrive in Macon, where they run
into the second group of survivors that join Lee; Lilly, Larry,
Carley, Doug, and Glenn Rhee. The leader, Lilly, is the angry,
paranoid air force engineer that has her father Larry to protect.

Tensions arise from the differing opinions of Kenny and Lilly on
how the group should be managed, forcing Lee to pick sides.

As it is a Point and Click adventure, the majority of the game is
centered around story, and like the comics and the television
show, it revolves around the struggles everyday people have to go
through to survive this dangerous new world. You'll start with a
group of survivors that will change as the time goes by as
walkers weed them out one by one and your decision making impacts
those who survive and those who meet their untimely demise.

Dialogue is timed, giving this game an extreme sense of urgency,
especially when all hell breaks loose and a wave of walkers
closes down on Lee and his group. The game gives you four options
and a few seconds for you to forge or break a relationship with
the other characters in your group.

Example of Dialogue/Drama:
( Click to show/hide )

The story is absolutely stellar, each episode presents the group
with new challenges they have to overcome, with highly believable
dialogue from every character. The story is funny, depressing,
and shocking whenever it needs to be, that will keep you at the
edge of your seat waiting to see what happens next.

The voice acting is some of the best I've heard in gaming. The
way the actors who do Lee and Clementine bounce of each others
emotions is absolutely beautiful as they fight through the
apocalypse. The heartfelt relationship they have is one of the
best father-daughter relationships I've seen in ages.

While the game only has one ending, the path to get there is very
intense. You choose which characters you're going to keep with
you on your journey, and depending on which characters you agree
with, you'll see different sides to the story that you can forge.

The one ending is so emotionally charged, it's one of the
greatest in gaming. I honestly was left in tears as the game
reached a close.

Story:
5/5

Gameplay:

While a large portion of the game is the story, another major
portion of the game revolves around puzzle solving and action
sequences between the dialogue.

Every episode has portions that require you to search your
environment and complete them to advance the game. They aren't
difficult, but they aren't too simple either, and strike a nice
change in pace when a dramatic scene occurs. While does sound
monotonous, the game never does it the same way twice, always
giving a second objective that makes these scenes all the more
urgent.

The actions scenes are also very well done, in tense moments
you'll have to quickly click the appropriate icons to slash your
way out of a crowd. In other situations, you'll have to button
mash to escape the situation.

But, I will say there are two problems in the gameplay
department. One is the slow speed Lee moves, it's minor, but it
can really be annoying to get across a large area.

The other one is on occasion, I've clicked on these icons but
nothing will happen, and I will die in frustration. This happens
rarely, but when it does, the scene does lose some dramatic value
to me, but again, this rarely happened.

Overall:
4.5/5

Graphics:

The game looks fantastic. Taking inspiration from the comic book
it's inspired by, the walking dead has heavy shading that makes
the game come alive.

Every location that the group traveled to had their own dark
nature to them, which made them very interesting visually. One
location that caught my attention was the high school in episode
four, and how dark and disturbing it became the location of a
Nazi level dictatorship after the apocalypse that you have to
infiltrate.

( Click to show/hide )

The characters also have great designs, each one with unique
traits to separate them from one another while still making them
very believable. The faces are very well animating with very
accurate expressions that really add to the dramatic moments.

( Click to show/hide )

Finally, the dismemberment of the undead also looks gorgeous,
with some kills as epic as it can get.

( Click to show/hide )

Overall:
5/5

Sound:

The music is also just as fantastic, the soundtrack is moody and
dark, and really hammers in the dark images on screen. It can be
dark or hopeful as the scenes change.

They come in at the perfect moments, and they've never felt out
of place.

Overall:
5/5

Final Verdict:

Overall, The Walking Dead is a masterpiece that is easily one of
the greatest games ever made. The story is teeth-grindingly
painful at times that will make you want to play to the very end.
The acting is superb, and it really helps you feel all these
difficulties that everyone is going through.

The main thing about the story is, the decisions you make feel
genuinely yours, and all the ripples that they cause feel as
humanly real as it can get. By the time you reach the end, it end
in a tragically beautiful ending that will leave you in tears.

The game play is amazing, will great puzzle choices and action
sequences that drive the middle sections of the game very
smoothly.

Finally, the sound and graphics are top notch, and really add to
the dark atmosphere we've come to expect from the Walking Dead.

If you like the show, you'll love the game, it's an absolute classic.
Simple and emotional, anyone can enjoy it. I recommend this to anyone,
anyone who likes good drama, enjoys a great adventure game, or wants
something totally different from the major games today. Get it.

Even Kong should pick this up.

Overall, I give the Walking Dead: The Game a 9.8/10

Also, if I had to rank the episodes from worst to best, I'd say:
1 - 3 - 4 - 2 - 5

I hope you guys liked the review, I haven't done one in a while, so constructive criticism is appreciated.

Emotionally charged? Yes. One of the greatest in gaming? Maybe. It's a fairly predictable one, especially when you consider the genre (of the story, not gameplay) it's home to. Of course, the main argument against my statement could be that just because it wasn't completely original doesn't mean that it wasn't good. Which is true, don't get me wrong, but honestly, in my opinion (which of course has nothing to do with YOUR review, by the way :P ), it's a good ending, but just not something to hail in such high regard.

Plus I just have a biased against TWD in the first place, so.

Re: The Walking Dead: The Game

I teared up at the ending and I basically knew what was going to happen. That is a great ending to me. I heard that Telltale was making a second but not sure if its just a rumor.

Good work SJB, glad you liked the game as much as I did!
