Valkyria Chronicles-PS3

Valkyria Chronicles is a Tactical RPG made by Sony in 2008. It went on to spawn an anime as well as 2 sequels for the PSP.

STORY
Gallia is a small, neutral country in Europa. The year is 1935. The Eastern European Imperial Alliance is at was with the Atlantic Federation over Ragnite(think oil) which is becoming scarce in the Imperial Empire. The Imperials are also known to have imprisoned the Darcsens(Jewish) into camps and uses them as forced labor and sources of experiments.

The Imperials come to know that Gallia has a large supply of untapped Ragnite sources and quickly invades. You are put in command of one militia called into action to stop the Imperials and aid Gallia's national army in stopping the invasion and forcing them out of Gallia.

Battle System:
Battles are divided into phases. Each phase has 2 parts: Your turn and the enemy turn.

Before each mission you are given a briefing, detailing your goal for the mission, a general view of the map, and what the enemy might be attempting.

From here you are allowed to position the units you want to use and in what position they should start.

Now the battle begins. Usually you are granted the first opportunity to move.

Command Mode
This is a top down view of the map, showing your position and enemy positions you can see. If none of your troops has line of sight on an enemy, they will not appear on the map. Also, if you lose sight of an enemy they will appear as a question mark on the map.

At the top of the screen are badge icons known as CP. You get a set CP per turn, and if you do not use them all they stack.(if you get 4 CP per turn, and only use 1 then end your phase, you will start the next turn with 7)

Certain members of your team come with CP attached to them. When deployed they increase your total CP by 1(if you get 4 per turn normally, adding Alicia would give you 5).

Each turn for a normal character costs 1 CP, moving tanks costs 2.

CP can also be used to issue orders to your troops.

If a character has CP attached to them and they are downed, you lose that CP. The same goes for the enemy so use that to your advantage.

Action Mode
Once you have surveyed the map and come up with a plan, you choose characters to move. Once you choose a character the game zooms in on them. Above their heads are lines of site showing where they see enemies.

There is a yellow bar below the character that is the action gauge. As you move it slowly deceases. When it is empty you can no longer move. You can use the same character multiple times but each time they will have less AP and can't move as far.

You can attack once per turn per character. You will enter an over the shoulder view when attacking and can aim where you want to shoot. Headshots do the most damage.

You can crouch behind sandbags or in small grass to nullify heashots and take less damage.

When your characters HP goes to 0, they are downed. If you can get an ally to their body in 3 phases(you and enemy turns, it's a long time) that character will die and you will no longer have access to them. Also, if the enemy tags their body before you get to them, they die as well.

Once you use all your CP or decide you have done enough, now it is the enemy turn.

Enemy Phase:
Just like your turn, the enemy gets a turn. Generally they have more CP than you. If you do not have a line of sight on the unit they choose to move you will just see "shuffle shuffle" or "vroom vroom" on the map.

They will attack you and try to reach their goal during their turn.

Cross/Interception fire
Here is where Valkyria Chronicles differs from most tactical rpg's I've played. For either side, if an enemy unit is in range and moves where it can be seen the other units on the map will shoot at it while it moves.

For example, if you put 2 units behind a sandbag and the enemy runs a soldier towards them as soon as he is in range your units will fire on him possibly killing him.

Units:
There are 6 types of soldiers you can use. 5 foot troops, and tanks.

Scouts: Have a very large AP pool and can cover very large distances. Semi-weak against gun fire but able to do decent damage themselves. Shoots a rifle in 5-7 round bursts.

Shocktroopers: These are machine gunners. They can take the most damage from bullets of all the classes. They have a decent AP pool and can gain access to a flame thrower later in the game.

Lancers: These are you anti-tank/anti-armor soldiers.Slightly less AP than shocktroppers and are almost immune from explosive damage. They can only fire 3-4 rounds per phase before they run out of ammo

Engineers: The support class of your units. The can repair the tanks, resupply lancers and snipers with ammo, and remove mines. They have the second largest AP pool behind scouts but take massive damage from enemies. They can attack but are only really useful against lancers or snipers

Snipers: Just what you think they are. They have a pitiful AP pool, pitiful defense, and their accuracy sucks early on. They have a limited ammo supply like lancers. I have only found them useful on a couple of maps.

Tanks: It's a tank. Immune from normal gun fire. Usually only take damage from Lancers, other tanks, or mines. Has a glowing radiator on the back. This is it's weakpoint. One direct shot from a Lancer or tank and it's goodbye tank

Leveling
You do not level individual characters, just their classes. So all scouts will be at the same level no matter how much you use/don't use them.

You increase the accuracy/firepower of your weapons and your armor using the money you get after finishing missions

Overall

Pros:
-Good story and graphics
-Easy to pick up and learn
-Skirmishes allow you to level if necessary or just do a battle if that's all you want to do

Cons:
-AI is erratic. Can be dumb as a wall at times
-Can be frustrating at times when enemies constantly dodge attacks
-You are usually vastly outnumbered

Re: Valkyria Chronicles-PS3

Good review. I haven't played the first or third, but I liked Valkyria Chronicles 2.
I liked the mixture of strategy and action.

I guess the first one didn't do well enough on the PS3 to warrant a sequel on the console, but well enough for PSP sequels.

I think this was an overlooked game by many because it can be slow and you have to think before you act.

Re: Valkyria Chronicles-PS3

The second one has a very light tone and a school-type setting. The third is supposed to be more serious, but I haven't played it yet. Since it won't ever see an English release, I should probably just start it anyway. I'd be able to understand the majority of it.

From what I understand, 2 takes places two years after 1 and the war is over. 3 takes place during the same time as 1 but in a different location with a different squad.

Re: Valkyria Chronicles-PS3

The squad in 2 is the lowest ranked class in a military academy, the squad in 3 are convicts, I believe.
