Secret of Evermore

Developer: Square USA
Genre/s: Action RPG
Platform: SNES
Player/s: Single
Rating/s: Kids to Adults

Story

The story starts of in black and white back in the 60's in a laboratory in the city of Podunk. There seems to be some sort of malfunction and the lab is showered in light. Some 30 years later, a boy and his dog are leaving from the local movie theater when a cat running by catches the dog's attention and bolts after the cat. The boy, whom the player must name, runs after his dog and ends up in the now abandoned laboratory. Curious as to what may lie inside, the boy and his dog discover a hidden room with a giant machine. While looking at the strange contraption, the dog starts to chew on some wires and the machine suddenly turns on and warps them to a strange new world!

Characters

( Click to show/hide )

This energetic boy is the protagonist of the game. He has a love for B-movies and is frequently mentioning movies that he's seen. Hailing from Ponduk, USA, he ventures into the strange new land of Evermore.

Dog is a loyal companion and a great fighter. He will be of much help to the boy in their adventure. He has the ability to sniff out hidden items that will be of much help throughout the game and attack any threats that may lie ahead.

Elizabeth AKA Fire Eyes, is the leader of a tribe in Prehistoria. She will start you off on the right path in search of a way back home. She also offers assistance thru some magic "call beads" that allow you to summon her.

Horace Highwater, the second non-Evermorian that you encounter, will help you in the land of Antiqua. He too shall offer his assistance thru the power of the "call beads."

You meet Camellia Bluegarden in the realm of Gothica where she is queen. She can be summoned using call beads to cast spells.

Professor Ruffleberg is the great creator of the experiment that is Evermore. Omnitopia is the final world in Evermore and this is where you will find the professor. He is the last of the inhabitants that you will meet
on your journey back home.

Carltron is Ruffleberg's robot butler and the game's main antagonist. Even though he is a robot built to serve the professor, he appears to have the capacity for evil. Carltron is the reason why Evermore is set into termoil.

Gameplay

Secret of Evermore is an action RPG. Much like Secret of Mana, the player controls the boy and the dog and can alternate control between the two by pressing the select button. The menu system also features the "ring" menu, again like in SoM, at any moment during the game.

Combat

Combat is a simple. Just face the enemy and press the attack button. The power of your attack requires a short period of time to recharge in strenght. This power bar is located at the bottom of the screen along with the HP count for both characters. For a full strength attack, the bar should be allowed to recharge to 100%. If another attack is made before it reaches 100%, the attack is significantly weaker.

If you use a weapon long enough, it will level up. This increases the strength and also gives you a special attack when you hold the attack button down. The attack meter will go up beyond the 100%. The power increase depends on how many level ups the weapon has had. Some special attacks deal more damage, or more hits, or will connect with more enemies at once. Other special attacks give you a short projectile such as the lance weapons.

Alchemy

Ok so in the world of Evermore, one does not cast magic. That silly stuff if for kids. Here we mess around with "Alchemy!" Alchemy recipes can be learned from different characters thoughout the game. The spells require a combination of two different ingredients that you can find all over the place with the help of your dog's "sniff" skill when you press the R or L buttons. Another way to aquire ingredients is to purchase them from certain characters scattered in the world of Evermore. "Alchemy" spells level up the more you use them and you will learn a dozen or so spells. However you will only be able to equipt 9 at a time.

Also in your arsenal of spells are the "call beads" which are used to summon previously met characters, who can cast more powerful spells.

PERSONAL OPINION
Overall, I really liked the game. The story was original enough and it was a solid game. I loved the battle system and alchemy spells. Eventhough it was used in SoM first, it is a good system and worked well with the game none the less. A bit too short for the hardcore RPG player such as I, it's still worth playing in spite of that. I recommend you play it on a weekend with a six pack of your favorite brew.

Re: Secret of Evermore

This will be a nice review, I do believe.
It was smart of you to not put the (under construction) in the title again.

Thanks for the compliment, and thank you. I like to learn from my previous blunders. That "under construction" deal annoyed me that time. I think I'm going to start doing reviews of the games I finish while it's still fresh in my head.
