Pirated Games Part 7: CONY Soft's Street Fighter II Games (NES / Famicom)

The Eric Corp Gamer's RU Exclusive Review 33

Pirated Games Part 7: CONY Soft's Street Fighter II Games (NES / Famicom)

After more than a year since reviewing the horrendous pirated game Mortal Combat 5 for the Mega Drive (check out the review if you didn't read it), I'm finally back into reviewing these pirated games and busting them a new one. After all, busting makes me feel good.

The pirated game(s) I'm going to review today are the Street Fighter II pirated games made by a company called CONY Soft for the NES in the early-mid 90's.

Since Street Fighter II was extremely popular upon its 1991 release in the arcades, also throughout console ports and even today, obviously pirates attempt to milk this cash cow for all its worth. There is a huge array of Street Fighter II pirated games for the NES, each made by various gaming companies with their own respective fighting game engines, even the one used in Kart Fighter (check out my review of it, if you didn't read it yet). However, many of them are plain terrible with little effort shown in it.

Though I personally found the ones made by CONY Soft to be the worst of the bunch for reasons below. Check out why below...

REVIEW:

NOTE: This is a review of all the CONY Soft's SF II pirates, since they are mostly exact in design. Also, I struggled and tried really hard to not violate the forum rules of the site (like I did by accident in some of my earlier reviews), as I really reached my breaking point when playing these pirated fighting games.

Like with many different companies producing their own versions of Street Fighter II, there is so many versions of the same game with very little to no differences between one another.

The name of SF II hacks by CONY Soft (at least some names that I found):

Street Blaster II Pro
Street Blaster V Turbo 20
Street Fighter V Turbo 60
Street Fighter VI (or Fighter Street VI) 12 Peoples
Super Blaster VII Turbo 28
Street Fighter X Turbo 40

Graphics: F-
Unlike most pirated games where at least the graphics are at least above average, these games look horrendously bad. Everything about it is just painful to look at, and even to the point where it hurts your eyes. The coloring, the sprites the animation, the backgrounds are just awful. Depending on which version of the CONY pirate you've playing, the character select, VS., the victory, and the backgrounds differs, but they still look really bad, no matter which CONY version you play. They don't even try to replicate the graphics of the fighting game it's based off. It's really hard to explain why the graphics are really that bad, but I'll say it's probably the worst visuals I ever saw on the NES / Famicom. The only reason to give it a grade "A" is for the lack of effort on their visuals.

Gameplay: F-
As with any other fighting game, you and one other person duke it out to see who is the better fighter. Like in SF II, you face through a set number of people to become the street fighting champion of the world. While the selection of the original game its based off was unique and varied with each having their own fighting styles and no one playing the same as one another (of course, except Ryu and Ken, sort of), the many versions of CONY Soft (the ones with 20 or more) repeat the same characters over and over again except they are colored and named differently, I mean how lazy can you get? But that's the least of our worries, the gameplay is butchered beyond belief. This is the perfect example on how NOT to make a fighting game. The collision detection is very questionable, as sometimes when I'm clearly hitting my opponent, the game just doesn't register it or I/the opponent manages to hit, despite not even touching the person. It really doesn't help that the controls are unresponsive, as it just feels really stiff trying to attack and the chances of trying to do special moves in trying to do one are as equal as a solar eclipse. Also, I hate when you fall in the floor in these games, as you randomly bounce like a skipping stone three times before getting back up. The overall AI for these games are erratic as sometimes they do absolutely nothing or likes to constantly spam special moves, basically from ridiculous easy to ridiculous hard. And honestly, I don't feel any enjoyment from playing these games. Well, there is a two-player mode in these game, but it makes you wonder why you aren't playing the official Street Fighter II games instead. It actually makes Kart Fighter, an okay pirated game (for pirate standards) actually feel closer to Street Fighter II than this game.

Sound: F-
Remember when I said that Sonic Jam 6 (check out my review of that as well) had probably the worst music ever in a video game, I take that back. This is probably the absolute worst music I ever heard in my life. Unlike some of the previous pirated games that I reviewed where the music sorta sound like what they are supposed to be albeit with less than stellar results, they didn't even try to make it at least sound decent. They took some of the best classic fighting game music of Street Fighter II, and just...just...messed up the music to the point where it makes your ears bleed, no no no, it'll melts your ears off your head! THEY JUST DON'T TRY (Sorry for the use of all letters capitalized, but this is how I feel)! If you are really that desperate to play this game, I recommend that you play this game muted. Believe me, you'll thank me for it.

Unfortunately, this is the only music I can find on Youtube for the CONY Team's SF II pirates. Also, I might do this for now on with comparisons to the original to further prove my point on the music.

Controls: F
First of all, fighting games are just not meant to be on the NES due to the controller only having two buttons (A and B) to do any sort of action within the gameplay, yet these pirates still doesn't get it. Trying to punch and kick is unresponsive at times and feels stiff trying to do them. As a result, it makes it very unlikely to any sort of special moves due to this. You have a better chance trying to find a four-leaf clover in a field than trying to fiddle with the controls to do a special move. The only good thing is the movement is okay, but it's pointless when I can't even attack without forcing the game to do so. Now that I feel how the controls are for these games, I'm now taking the controls for the Master System and Game Boy versions of Street Fighter II for granted. Overall, it is very counter-intuitive for the player, which a game should NOT be.

Replay Value: F-
Wait, what replay value? There is no replay value at all, not even the ridiculous factor (if so, barely). Even the most casual players know better not to play this.

Overall: F-- (if that makes any sense)
By god, I can't believe this! Why? The CONY Soft's Street Fighter II pirates are some of the worst fighting games I ever played in my life. While some people criticize Capcom for releasing multiple versions of the same fighting game (Ex: SF II: The World Warrior --> SF II': Champion Edition --> SF II': Hyper Fighting), at least they took the time to fix some balancing issues and glitches, and added some new features to make the game more playable and fun. CONY Soft does not do any of that, as every version of their pirated game is the exact same thing other than the number of people in the game (basically duplicates) and some of the visuals, there is no bug fixes or anything to improve on the gameplay. These games are so bad, I rather play any other fighting game, good or bad, that's not from CONY Soft.

Next Part: Pirated Games Part 8: I'll think about it...

Eventually, I'll go over some of the other versions of Street Fighter II on the NES.

Now, if you excuse me, I gotta go rest as these atrocities took a lot out of me... I hope you enjoyed this review!

Worse than Pit Fighter, of course. At least that game had some redeeming values unlike these atrocious things they call "games".

I don't know about any other music bits found in the game, but I thought that the Zangief theme you linked from the NES pirate is pretty good.
