Pirated Games Part 2: Sonic Jam 6 / Super Mario 2 1998

Eric Corp Gamer's RU Exclusive Review 16
Sonic Jam 6 / Super Mario 2 1998

As you have read the first part of my review of pirates, you'll notice that Somari is Mario in Sonic's world, and Sonic 3D Blast 5 is just a NES version of Sonic 1, and obviously are plain horrible. In this part, I'm reviewing Sonic Jam 6 which is Sonic in Mario's world, and Super Mario 2 1998 is just a Genesis version of All-Stars version of SMB 1, and it's way worse than Somari and Sonic 3D Blast 5 together.

REVIEW

Graphics Average: C-

Sonic Jam 6: C
While is looks good from it's transition from the SNES to the Genesis, it obviously lacks in originality. All the Mario stuff were taken from All-Stars, while the sprites for Sonic were taken from Sonic 3, except Sonic swimming (which is just plain stupid, I mean when does that even happen in the Sonic series?). The title screen, which looks kinda impressive until one thing..."PRESS START BUTTOM"? You got to be kidding me... they couldn't proofread this? Just expected....ah forget it. As for the sprites, the animations are decent enough, but it does glitch up a lot, and it is more limited in terms of animations compared to the real game, I mean, what's with Princess Peach at the end of the game? What is she doing? I dunno. Anyway, decent enough but it just plain dumb.

Super Mario 2 1998: C-
Virtually the same, except it uses Mario sprites, which are kind made themselves (the small Mario, that is), and it looks poorly drawn. Like Sonic 3D Blast 5, the title screen is not as good as in Sonic Jam 6, as it just looks boring (although that's how it was in the real game, but there's nothing on the screen) Other than that, it's nothing special.

Sound Average: F-
Sonic Jam 6: F-
I just can't believe what the pirates had done to the music from All-Stars, let alone the music in Super Mario Bros. I am just shocked that the music we all know and love is butchered. The music is way worse than the ones in Somari (I mean to be honest, at least Somari's kinda sounded like it, though). I mean, it may be candidate for the worst sound on a 16-bit console (or maybe of all time). I mean, imagine if Super Mario All-Stars couldn't make great 16-bit renditions of the original SMB, and was put on the Genesis instead of the SNES, you would probably not play that at all. Think of this as a "proof-of-concept" of what I said before. Anyway, it's pure garbage, it makes Action 52's music sound good.

Super Mario 2 1998: F-
Ditto here, they obviously didn't change anything here. Just expected from pirates...

NOTE: I couldn't find any soundtrack videos from YouTube, so sorry for no videos like that, as it was for Part 1. Unless someone find one, either I or someone here can put the soundtrack video here.

Gameplay Average: F-

Sonic Jam 6: F-
There is a lot to say about the gameplay, as it's probably the one that was the most poorly done (other than the controls, and sound) of the bunch. First of all, the game is very glitched up, as the collision detection is some of the worst on the Genesis. I mean, even when I just jump on a Goomba, I get hurt or die anyway, because of how annoying the detection is. Also, the physics from both version of SMB 1 (8-bit or 16-bit) is pretty much absent here. I mean, I just can't stop bouncing on the damn Koopas, as they are probably the most annoying enemy in the game (when they should be cakewalk, like in the real game). Also, you have the ability to jump on Piranha Plants...seriously, that is the most retarded thing I ever heard, I mean when does that happen in the official game? Also, when you grab items (Mushroom, Fire Flower, Star etc.), when you shoot fire, or when you don't hold the jump button all the way, you drop down like a rock, and can cause you cheap deaths. Another thing to mention...remember the ability to run past little gaps in the real game (ex: World 4 castle). In this game, it's absent, and you have to jump gap to gap. And to add on the collision detection in this game, the fire pillars in the castle levels, especially the one in World 4, you can't dodge it at all...jumping doesn't work (normal jump, run and jump etc.), and you immediately get hurt or die. So, if you don't have a mushroom, it's virtually impossible to get past it. To make things worse, the items are more scarce than the real game, which makes you have to survive levels without getting hurt. To make a hard game easier, Bowser takes only one hit (even in World 8-4, only one hit). The ending of this game is basically an atrocious ending saying, "Thank you, Sonic! Now please try again!". Why in the world would I play the game again...as it doesn't have a harder mode like All-Stars does. Face it, the gameplay is just plain pointless, and not worth it. They made an once-fairly challenged game (All-Stars), unfairly cheap and just isn't fun at all.

Super Mario 2 1998: F-
Did you expect any improvement? Hopefully not. Ditto here, except a few things. First of all, unlike Sonic Jam 6, this version actually have a 2-player mode. But, who in the world would play this game together? I want to imagine that... Also, the ending still says the player is "Sonic" instead of "Mario". I also heard that it also, had the animation where Peach kisses Mario, but the gameplay makes this entirely pointless. It's much worth it in All-Stars than in this pirated game. Just expected from pirates...

Controls Average: F-
Sonic Jam 6: F-
The controls are just horrendous, and are probably due to horrible programming. Much of the control issues are mostly the jumping in the game, while the walking and running are sub-par, at best. The jumping is so messed up, because of these reasons. You have to hold the jump button pretty much all the time, because if you do not do this, you'll fall down like a rock (as I mentioned under the gameplay), and for some reason sometimes when you jump, you still move to the right even if you don't move. Also, it's really annoying trying to get on one simple block (it takes me like more than a minute when it should just take me like one second). As for the running and walking, it's as I mentioned before, it's sub-par. First of all, it just feels slippery, and you just have to keep moving on and on until you reach a point when you are able to stop without falling off. Not much to say here, to be honest. It's just garbage.

Super Mario 2 1998: F-
Ditto here. Actually nothing to say here, no improvement here. Do I have to say it again, though?

Replay Value Average: F-

Sonic Jam 6: F-
Unlike Somari, in which you would only play it, as the game actually had potential to be good. This on the other hand, is not worth playing at all. You probably would play it for the bad factor. That's it, and that's all it's worth.

Super Mario 2 1998: F-
Just expected from pirates....

Overall Average:

Sonic Jam 6: F-
This game is just not worth your time... I mean, just stick with Somari at this point, at least it had something coming. I mean they totally messed up the game in every form. I mean, if this game wasn't based off All-Stars, maybe I wouldn't be so annoyed about this...

Super Mario 2 1998: F-
Not worth your time, at all in either version...

Next Part: Kart Fighter (uploaded, check it out)

Actually, they are pirated. They were sold mostly in Asian countries to try to sell people this garbage to make a quick buck. Why do you think they are cartridges still exist and are still being produced today? It may look like hacks but they are pirated games, as many Sonic fan websites (and so do I) classify these games as pirates.

Re: Pirated Games Part 2: Sonic Jam 6 / Super Mario 2 1998

No problem, I see many people mistake these for hacks, so you're not the only one. Anyway, I'm glad your liked my review. Look forward for Part 3.
