Pirated Games Part 1: Somari / Sonic 3D Blast 5

Eric Corp Gamer's RU Exclusive Review 15
Pirated Games Part 1: Somari / Sonic 3D Blast 5

During the 1990s (and even today, I believe), many pirated games were created mostly in Asian countries, and many of them are infamous for being pretty bad. In my reviews of pirated games, I'll be reviewing most, if not, all pirated games on the NES, SNES, Genesis, and the Game Boy. In this first part, We'll be looking at Somari and Sonic 3D Blast 5 for the Nintendo Entertainment System.

REVIEW

Graphics Average:
C-

Somari: C
For a pirated game, it doesn't look half bad. The title screen of this game looks pretty impressive, as it looks very accurate to Sonic 1's title screen except the scrolling isn't there, but so what? The main sprite which is Mario with Tails' shoes, looks decent enough, but his animation is kinda awkward. The backgrounds are good transitions from the Genesis to the NES, though the colors used are kinda poorly chosen. I'll admit this game look decent, and it really shows.

Sonic 3D Blast 5: D+
Despite the backgrounds and the enemy sprites are the same, the title screen and the sprites have been changed. The title screen is nowhere as amazing as Somari's, as it just look like they rushed the title screen because of... laziness, as it just plain inaccurate to Sonic 1's title screen. Why couldn't they just change the Somari thing to Sonic's instead of making its own title screen? The main sprite which is Sonic himself, looks terrible looking and it also looks rushed, as the animation is still kinda weird looking. Other than that, it looks the same.

Gameplay Average: F
Somari: F
While the Sonic graphics transitioned fairly to the NES, sadly not the gameplay. It's basically a poor man's Sonic 1... wait, it's not even that. First of all, the game is just too slow... I mean the Sonic 1 SMS did well with the speed to fit with the 8-bit system, but why not this (Sonic 1 SMS is officially made, while Somari is not). Even if the game is fast, there is so many problems with this game, like what's with the layout of the zones? It's nowhere like the layout seen in Sonic 1, it's like Action 52 mixed with Sonic 1, and the people didn't bother testing the layout out. To make things worse, the collision detection in this game is plain horrendous, as sometimes when I jump on enemies, I either get hurt or die, and when I spin-dash near an enemy, I bounce in the air, and is vulnerable to getting hit by something like the crab-meat that shoot those fireballs. To make things EVEN worse, when you fall in a place full of spikes which is impossible to get back up, the temporary invincibility is too excessive, and you keep getting the rings which continues on and on and on... where's a double-spike bug when you need one? There's more to say, but it'll get on your nerves. To make things EVEN MORE worse, there is no ending to award the success of beating the game, and all you get is a black screen. To make a long story short, the gameplay is just plain abomination, it actually makes Action 52 (to me, that is) look decent.

Sonic 3D Blast: F
There's nothing to say here, as it basically have the same exact gameplay that Somari has. Yep, nothing has improved... just expected from pirates.

Sound Average: F-

Somari: F-
The music in this game are horrible renditions of the original Genesis version. It's so bad, it might actually make Action 52 sound good. I think the "Somari Team" is trying a bit too much to make it sound like the original. I mean, try to even survive the whole game with the sound on, while playing this game. Also, they couldn't even perfect the jumping sound, why not? Even the Sonic 1 SMS perfected it (I know, that was official), why not this? It's really hard to explain. Just listen to it, and determine it yourself.

Sonic 3D Blast: F-
Obviously, the same music we get from Somari. What do you expect here?

Controls Average: F
Somari: F
I don't know what they were thinking. The walking and running is retarded, as he just slips all over the place. To make things worse, the jumping is just stiff. You always either overshoot or undershoot a jump because of the jumping controls. Let's put it this way, this game has some of the worst controls on the NES.

Sonic 3D Blast 5: F
Ha, ha, ha, ha! Expecting any improvements? In your dreams...

Replay Value Average: D

Somari: D
Despite its flaws, I'll admit it did have some potential of being a great idea, but pirates just can't figure it out. People will only play this for either the bad factor or just when they are bored, and have nothing to do.

Sonic 3D Blast 5: D-
It's the same as Somari, obviously. Only not as impressive, considering they didn't do any improvements from Somari, whatsoever.

Overall Average:

Somari: D

While this is a terrible pirated game, it does sound like a good idea someone from the hacking community could try to work on, to improve it to be the definitive Sonic game on the NES, but I doubt that will happen, as this is all you would have.

Sonic 3D Blast 5: F
While the same, I mean, they couldn't even improve it one bit... Why not? Just stick with Somari, if you wish to play this game...
NEXT PART: Sonic Jam 6 / Super Mario 2 1998 (uploaded on here, check it out)

I really liked the way you discribe the game, "it's like a drunk person created the layout of the zones, and didn't even test it out to see if it's possible to get past the act, " .

All in all, it's a nice review.

Thanks, jozman3000. I'll try to use more of that on my later parts of my Pirated Games review.
