Mighty Final Fight

Mighty Final Fight, a beat 'em up game on the NES, and the NES has no shortage of beat 'em up games, though I think this one is one of the best.

If you would like to play this one for yourself, it is right here, on the site.
Retro Uprising - Arcade - Mighty Final Fight

Let's start with this:
Made by Capcom for the NES in 1993, this game no doubt slipped by fairly unnoticed, seeing as most developers had moved on to the more powerful SNES.

Capcom had decided that there was going to be a Final Fight game on the NES, and it is the most complete Final Fight to be released on a Nintendo console. There was no censorship or removal of enemies, and it featured all three characters, unlike the SNES version which only featured two.

Now comes the problem, the NES was an 8bit console, and Final Fight was not an 8bit game. So to make it work, something had to be changed. So they simplified the graphics, to a super deformed style akin to that of River City Ransom.

With the graphics changed, it seemed the game had to do something else, so the graphics would seem more natural, so it was changed to be a parody of the other Final Fight games.

Story:
The evil Mad Gear Gang has kidnapped mayor Mike Haggar's daughter, Jessica. So he is out to get her back. Cody is along for the ride, because Jessica is his girlfriend. And Guy? He is more or less forced along because his best friend Cody is going along, and who would oppose the mayor, especially when he is a muscular pro-wrestler.

It's just that simple. Of course while the Mad Gear Gang had political motivation for kidnapping Jessica in Final Fight, this time it is because their leader became infatuated with her, and is going to force her to marry him.

Gameplay: 4
Move to the right, enemies appear, beat them down, repeat.
In most games this degree of repetition is frustrating, here the mechanics are so well executed it is pleasant.

Each character plays different. Cody is perfectly balanced, Guy is fast, but does very little damage, and Mike Haggar is a tank, he hits hard, but is slow as can be.

One button for striking, one for jumping, and yet all the moves are intact.
When you strike the enemy multiple times, you do your combo, which ends in a finishing move that does more damage. When you press the strike button and the jump button, you do a move that consumes some of your vitality, these moves are powerful. Then, when your level reaches 4 {more on that later}, you earn a special attack that doesn't consume vitality. This is done by rapidly tapping either left or right, and the strike button. This move is the biggest variance between characters, Cody does a hadouken type move, Guy does a double kick, and Haggar does some crazy sliding body press.

To execute a throw, you walk into an enemy, this makes your character grab them. From there you can do one of several things: A. You beat them down with the strike button, B. You press the strike button and a direction to throw them, C. You jump, then press the strike button to do a different throw.

Now then, here is the more on the leveling up, as I promised earlier:

Your character gets EXP as he beats people up, and then they level up. Leveling up does several things, it increases your maximum vitality, restores your vitality, increases the damage you do, and once you reach level 4, you learn a new move.
The stronger a character is, the less EXP it takes to level up, so for Guy, it takes the least amount to level up, and the most for Haggar.

Both Cody and Guy start at level 1, but Haggar starts at level 3, but that doesn't make Haggar the best choice. You see, it takes more EXP to level from 3 to 4, then it does to get from 1 to 2, and Haggar is stronger meaning it takes more EXP to get him from 3 to 4, then it would to get one of the other two from 3 to 4.

The EXP system is actually pretty nice, seeing as the enemies get stronger as the game progresses, so it should stand to reason that you do too.

There were also two other notable changes to the gameplay:
There is no multiplayer, the whole thing is single player. {This is something the SNES versions share with it}

There are only three weapon types, one for each character. Cody gets a knife, Guy gets shuriken, and Haggar gets a giant mallet.
Graphics: 4
It's the NES, what can you do?
The graphics are pretty good in my opinion, but there are a lot of better looking games on the NES, that and there is a rather large amount of flicker.

I like the super deformed characters, they add a certain degree of comedy to the violence of beating the crap out of random street punks.

Sound: 4
Maybe it's just me, but I like the music. It may be repetitive, but I just like 8bit music. I have no explanation as to why I like the music in this one, I just do, and since this is my review, based on my opinion, I am going to rate the sound highly because I like it.

I have decided not to post videos in my reviews anymore, so if you want to hear it, find a video on your own, or better yet, just play the game.

Replay Value: 3
It isn't worth playing through all that many times. Sure the mechanics are nice, and the characters are all different, but it is the same levels, with the same bosses. There is nothing new to see, as this game is linear. You could try to beat it without using continues, or just try playing through it with one character all the way through, but at game over, I tend to switch characters, as I am doing something wrong if I died five times to get to game over.

It is fun to pick up randomly after a while of not playing it, then play for a few minutes. But yeah, it isn't worth playing all the way through a whole lot of times, even if the mechanics are great.

Challenge: 4
Sometimes it gets brutally hard, some of the bosses are cheap enough to frustrate most players. But it isn't all too difficult, except when enemies decide to block non-stop. That pisses me off.

Other than that, the difficulty is fairly balanced, and the difficulty slowly increases {as does your level} and it doesn't feel like the game randomly jumps up in difficulty. It just eases you in, so the difficulty doesn't seem to be increasing, while it is anyway.

Overall: 3.8/5

A good game that is worth checking out if you are a fan of beat 'em up games, or just want a game you can play for a few minutes at a time, a game that doesn't require any real time commitment.

I actually think it is on the same level, or even better. Like I said, it is online here so you could see for yourself.

But it is at least better than the SNES versions, as it has all three characters.

I guess I could post a video to show you the gameplay:

The intro and the first level:
( Click to show/hide )

The later levels are better, especially after you've leveled up to four, so you can do the special moves that don't kill your health.
