LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game (3DS Review)

LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game is similar to the other LEGO video games yet this one is a bit more special. For one thing, this review is for the 3DS and this version is better than the other console versions. The 3DS really helps this game and makes it stronger than LEGO Pirates for the other consoles by enhancing the graphics and adding much needed depth to the game. But let's save this talk for the actual review, shall we?

LEGO Pirates' gameplay is similar to other LEGO game and there isn't much new. Your lifespan includes 4 hearts that can be replenished if you can find any other hearts from destroying objects or from enemies. The humor and refreshing levels make LEGO Pirates even more enjoyable.

A unique feature that the other LEGO Pirates games have is the Dueling fights. When you fight bosses or mini-bosses, sword will appear over there heads. By pressing Y, a duel starts. In this duel you have to press B repeatedly and then hit Y, A, or X, in the proper order that appears on the screen to land a hit on your opponent. While this is fun and refreshing at first, it takes long and gets boring after a couple of duels.

The controls are easy and different roles and powers for different characters make the game more interesting and add a little strategic puzzles to the game. The main story follows the storyline of all four Pirates' movies with four levels from each one. Overall, the gameplay is very smooth and enjoyable and the controls are very easy to utilize.

Graphics: (4/5)

LEGO Pirates deserves a high grade in graphics. The 3D really adds a lot to the game that the other consoles don't. The characters designs looks great and just like the characters in the movie. There are probably a hundred characters or so to choose from. The lego and blocky images are common to the LEGO series but Pirates has improved images as the depth and graphics from the movie are translated great to the 3DS. Small things to notice are that many things from the movies are translated the game like personality. For example, Jack Sparrow walks like he does in the movies. Overall, the 3DS makes the graphics better than it's other console rivals utilizing the 3D.

Sound: (5/5)
The sound in LEGO Pirates is outstanding. Several songs from the movies are translated directly into the game and are used at appropriate times.

The sounds of pushing a lever or turning a key and opening chests can be clearly heard. Although the characters cannot talk, the humor from the game makes up for that in cutscenes. The sound of swords clashing and guns being fired are spot on. The sound for LEGO Pirates is wonderful. I always keep my volume at maximum when playing this game as it is easily one of the more enjoyable parts of the game.

Replay Value: (4/5)
At first, you might not think this game should get a 4/5. But you have to consider the Free Play mode. After beating each level in the story mode, you get to play the levels in Free Play. In Story mode, you won't be able to get everything. Free Play gives the incentives to get all 10 Glass Ships, 1 Extra, and 4 Gold Medallions in each level. Also, getting enough money to buy all the characters and extras made me give this a higher grade than you may think. Plus, the game is fun enough that I would want to play again.

Challenge: (4/5)
Completing the story mode and beating the game isn't very much of a challenge, but to get 100% of everything, the game becomes much more challenging. Several characters have powers unique to their group and you have to progress in the game to get these characters to use in Free Play. The levels expand much more when you play in Free Play since you can access several more areas to collect everything in each game. Also, the characters and extras you need to buy cost a lot of money so you have to do a lot of levels to get everything in the game.

Tilt: (5/5)
A really great 3DS game that might get unnoticed by most gamers. I think if you have some extra money and a 3DS spend it on this game for this system and not one of the other consoles.

LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game is a great experience for any gamer to play especially if you get it for the 3DS. After beating the Story Mode that might seem a little short, basically play the game over again with several new areas to access in Free Play. The graphics look great, the sound is amazing, and the game adds challenge with Free Play and getting 100%. A great 3DS game that I recommend gamers of all ages and especially if you enjoy the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.
