The Honest Retro Uprising Gamer - #5 - Back to the future

(Sorry for my absence but I was in London for a whole month. That's what you call vacation.)

Back to the future? Nintendo? A video game based on a movie!? Is it good? Does it follow the story? Is it lemon-scented?

Well... It does follow story elements, like the beginning, the conflicts, the climax, the falling action, and the resolution. The gameplay however is almost bad, it's just bland.

As it does follow the story of Marty McFly going on an adventure to save his parents relationship, making a game into a movie is always what you expect it to become, a bad game. This one of the reason why I disike video games based on movies. This is the first reason, the second reason is that the producers want the game to be really attached to the format and story of the movie itself. Coming to the conclusion of this paragraph. The reason why I dislike movie based games is that they tend to show spoilers. If you haven't watched the movie yet but you purchased the game of it, you might find yourself already knowing the story when you finish it. So there's no point of watching the movie anymore. This can also come from toy commercials too. In a Hot wheels commercial about Cars 2, they tell us a spoiler about the movie. Heck, they even showed footage of it!

So back to "Back to the Future." In the first few zones you're running up in a street where people tend to try a nd harm you. Even these workers who are carrying a glass window. It doesn't even look like a window is there. It's just a invisible block of space with no outline, But when you crash into it, the outline is there. (See image to the left if you want to know what I'm typing about.) The two action buttons come to use in these 4 zones, the A button jumps. Although for some reason you can't jump over a bench. And the B button will let you throw a bowling ball to teach your enemies the pain they cause you. You can only get a bowling ball when you grab the item. There's also other powerups like a skateboard that will let go faster so you can beat the time limit. Yes, your certainly not supposed to waste your time on the street levels as there is a time limit. In fact there two time limits. The actual countdown and a picture of Marty with his parents. The picture with Marty' parents starts to fade so in order to stop it, you have to collect clocks... seriously!?

So after the street zone, you get to go into the Ice cream & Sundae parlor where you get to throw Sundaes at bullies... really? After using the B button to throw sundaes at bullies for 50 TIMES! You get to go back to the street zone... again?
Then you get to go inside the school zone where Marty' mother falls in love with his own son so now you have to dodge hearts with a book... what? So after all her hearts are lost you go through the street zone again and then you get to the Prom Night Zone where you have to grab notes of lyrics with your guitar... what the heck!? So finally, your parents hook up to the amazing, choppy 8-bit song and kiss which starts the process of Marty' birth. So finally after going through another long street zone you finally get to the Lightning Clock zone or rather preferred, the Final Zone. (What's with all the Sonic instances, Zones, really?) So finally we see something other than the bland, unique things that wasn't in the movie. We get to drive the DeLorean DMC-12. Or just the DeLorean. So you must drive 88 Miles Prower (Incredibly lame intended pun), to time travel into the next game. You must avoid lightning in order to go faster. Wait, I thought they used the lightning to go faster. Anyways, there are two outcomes/resolutions/endings to this game. The happy ending where the text tells you that you've won or have you... And the other ending is the bad ending where the text tells you that you're stuck there forever! I thought 1955 wasn't so bad. I mean, there are bullies but there are Sundae parlors.

So this game received a lot of negative reception, big whoop! Just play Aladdin 2 for the NES and you'll see the real meaning of negative reception. Out of all the problems of this game, I actually kind of like. I mean, it's not the worst game. If you know what to do exactly it can actually be fun. But it's not worth playing everytime. It's only worth playing when you are really bored or you are doing a review about it. Overall the game is a so-so. Many problems but still a fun game if you know what to do.

I'll give this game a B-.

Watch out for the next review and have a fun day!

Hi XL, I like your review and I think you kept your cool with this bad boy rather well {AVGN lost it with this one}.

Just one tiny bit of constructive criticism = please provide spaces every 4 -5 lines as a break for the eyes, as large blocks of uninterrupted text can be difficult for old Gamers like myself to read {I had to pop it up HUGE with Ctrl + beforehand} - other than that, it's a fun read and I look forward to your next review!

Thanks for the advice on spacing, I really appreciate that. Also, thanks for the positive reception. I work hard on typing the review rather than playing the game itself.
