Heavy Rain-PS3

Heavy Rain is a PS3 game from Quantic Dreams, the company behind Indigo Prophecy/Fahrenheit.

Well, it's not really a "game". It's more of an interactive movie/drama.

Basic Plot:
There is a serial killer roaming around known as the Origami Killer. He only kills during periods of heavy rain, and all his victims are kids. die from drowning, and are found with an origami figure in one hand, mud on their faces, and an orchid on their chests.

Ethan Mars has his son taken and has 4 days to find his son before he dies.

Main Characters:
There are 4 main characters you play as in Heavy Rain:

Ethan Mars:His son Shaun is kidnapped by the Origami Killer and Ethan is hellbent on finding him after the death of his first son in an accident several years earlier

Norman Jayden:An FBI profiler brought in to help solve the case. He has a high tech set of glasses known as ARI that allows him to see clues and examine fingerprints and DNA at the scene. He is highly addicted to the drug Triptocaine though he tries to hide it.

Scott Shelby:A former police officer turned Private Eye hired by the victims of the Origami Killer to help solve the case.

Madison Paige:An insomniac reporter who is also working on the Origami Killer crimes. She hopes to solve the case and write a book on it.

Gameplay:
The game is divided into chapters, each focusing on 1 character(sometimes 2).

The majority of the time you walk around asking questions or looking for clues. Sometimes you have to fight in order to live or escape a situation.

Reading people is a must. You must gauge what the person wants to here in order to get information from them. Circling around your head will be responses/questions. Ask the right ones and the people will give you good information. Pick the wrong ones and you will agitate them and they may attack.

All action/fight/escape sequences are quick time events. A prompt will appear on screen, and you must press the appropriate button or move the right stick in the right direction quickly in order to dodge the attacks or make a successful attack of your own. Missing a couple of prompts won't necessarily make you fail so there is some room for error.

Twists:
Unlike a lot of games, the 4 main characters can die. There is no "game over". If one character dies, their role in the game is over but the story keeps going. In fact all 4 main characters can die and the story will have a specific ending. The endings change based on who lived and what evidence was found through the game.

How you perform in fights and what info you gain also has ripple effects later down the line. Some are minor like that characters face being battered because they lost a fight, or clothes being dirty from falling down a hill.

Some have major ripple effects. Fail to find a piece of evidence and you may not be able to solve the case as Jayden for example.

Overall:
This is a really good game, though it starts off VERY slowly. The first several chapters are back story for Ethan and basically a tutorial on how to use the controls. However, once you get passed that it starts to pick up and once you really start putting the clues together you won't want to put it down.

Pros
-Good story
-Character interactions can be great
-Multiple ways to handle situations that may affect the ending

Cons
-Prompts can appear and disappear too quickly at times
-Sometimes motion sensing moves don't seem to register correctly
-I experienced a little lagginess in a few areas

Bottom Line
If you have a PS3, give it a go. Also if you can locate a copy for PS2, XBOX, or PC do yourself a favor and play Indigo Prophecy/Fahrenheit as well.

Re: Heavy Rain-PS3

Great Review
- first ever game I bought on the ps3.
I liked it but some of the controls got annoying

Its nowhere near as fantastic as Fahrenheit though which is my favorite game of all time apart from broken sword.

Re: Heavy Rain-PS3

I've been playing with the PS Move lately to see if it is any better or worse.

My experience is it is both better and worse.

Better:
-Thoughts/Question and answer options don't circle around the head, you simply point and click the one you want
-It can be more immersive at times, like you have to reach forward to grab the handle then pull back to open the door.
-You no longer have to hold R2 to walk, just use the stick

Worse:
-You have to hold the move controller different ways for different actions(pointed at the TV, vertically, or horizontally) and it can get annoying
-Eye still loses track of your motion sensing inputs causing you to fail QTE's
-Some of the button combinations you are required to press and hold are awkward.

Re: Heavy Rain-PS3

Sounds like an interesting game to play. But it doesn't sound like it has too much replay value since it's a mystery type game and well the mystery sort of ends once you finish it the first time. Unless it has multiple scenarios, this is probably something I would only buy used and under $15.

It has slight replay value. Mainly if you let someone die and don't see all of the chapters, miss clues, or if you want to see all the endings

The main problem is the killer is always the same. However, on the second time you play you can try to make sure the killer gets away with it if you want.

Re: Heavy Rain-PS3

I didn't care about this for the reason joz pointed out, it's pretty much a one time deal. It's like LA Noire, good for some people but it's really just like watching a slightly interactive detective movie, once you know the plot it's pointless.

Re: Heavy Rain-PS3

Sometimes a game like this will have an interesting enough plot to play through several times even after seeing all of the endings. It doesn't work as well for detective stories though, it's like rewatching an episode of Law & Order, you know who the killer is, you know who the red herrings are, but it can still be fun to watch after a couple of years.
