Earthbound Zero

Earthbound Zero is an adventure RPG. You start out as a kid whose house is being pestered by a poltergeist. You are then sent off on a journey all over the world leading to many new and exciting places. The story is very good and can draw anyone in. Throughout the game, you fight many weird and wacky enemies like the Hippie or the Rope.

You are able to name the four characters that can be on the party. Unlike most RPGs, you see your all your party on the map, instead of just your leader. You are also moving around on a large area with no overview map. You travel from place to place along paths in between.

There are two main fighting styles that can be used in the game; PSI or physical attacks. PSI fighting is using your character's mental prowers to damage your opponent. While the damage dealt is higher than physical fighting, you have a limited amount of PP that can be recharged using items, or resting at an inn. One character has an offensive style PSI list though.

The graphics are pretty nice for the NES, with spacial sizing to make it as realistic as an NES game can. The enemies sprite in the battle screen looks fantastic compared to the goombas of Mario Bros.

The music is pleasing to the ears, but it starts to wear since most outdoor areas have the same music. Inns always have the same music, as do the shops. But, it's not enough to drive people away.

The replay value varies. If you go to the last area and save there, there's no way out, however, if you save before going there, you'll be able to explore more. It all depends on what you do. There are also three save slots so you can play the game at least three times before having to delete files.

Overall, the game is great, there are very few downsides. If you like RPGs, or adventure games, it's right up your alley. Even if you don't like the genre of this game, it's worth a shot.

Play Earthbound Zero online.
