Contra: Hard Corps

Eric Corp Gamer's RU Exclusive Review 29
Contra: Hard Corps

Well, since the prequel to this game Hard Corps: Uprising was released a day ago, I might as well review Contra: Hard Corps, which was released for the Sega Genesis in 1994, as one of the only two games in the franchise to be made on a Sega platform (the other being the horrible Contra: Legacy of War), but the only Sega exclusive. Does it live up to its Contra name or does it not? Well, you know the answer for that.

REVIEW

Story:
"Set five years after the events of , an elite team of commandos called the "Unified Military Special Mobile Task Force K-X", also known as the "Contra Hard Corps", has been assembled to combat the rapid spread of crime and illegal activities following the war. When an unknown hacker infiltrates the city's security system and reprograms a group of unmanned robots to cause havoc, the Hard Corps are deployed to handle the situation. As the game progresses, the player will uncover a plot involving Colonel Bahamut, a former war hero, who seeks to overthrow the Government by developing new types of weapon using a stolen alien cell."

-Wikipedia article on Contra: Hard Corps

Graphics: B+
The graphics are quite commendable on the system respecting limitations. All four characters look pleasantly done and are animated very well with each having their own animations. An equal treatment applies to the enemy sprites also with no choppy movement or bland coloring whatsoever. The backgrounds while the least appealing of the graphics as the colors are kinda dull albeit a little repetitive at times, it still displays nicely nonetheless. While this doesn't live up to the graphics in Contra III, but who expects it to be? It doesn't have to live up to look awesome by Genesis standards, and that's okay in my book.

Gameplay: A
The gameplay is basically...well Contra, still containing that fast-paced action which what made the series fun to begin with. Like it always have been, you take control of a character and shoot all the enemies and bosses in your way to the end of each level, but this one seems to have a huge reliance on boss battles, as you will encounter at least two or more of these guys in each stage; a rather interesting idea on my part. Also, Contra: Hard Corps is much more story-driven than the earlier games as we actually get scenes (text) of our commander explaining the mission and people talking to each other, which is a nice touch. Also unlike the previous games, you have the ability to choose between four characters: Ray is the typical Contra soldier, Sheena is the first playable female character in the series, Fang is a cybernetic humanoid wolf, and lastly, Browny is a small-sized combat robot. Each of these protagonists have their own specialties and special weapons to offer, which adds much more variety to each of them. Speaking of that, they revamped the weapon system used in Contra III but instead of only holding two guns, and contains a lot of weapons to choose from, while Hard Corps can hold and only has four guns, but are different for each protagonist. Finally, I do like the fact they kept the SHOT system from the previous game (SHOT I makes you shoot while moving, as SHOT II makes you stand while shooting), which makes it much easier to shoot certain enemies and bosses. While the game is enjoyable and innovative as it has been, BOY OH BOY...I find this the most difficult in the entire series, tied with Contra 4. Despite that fact, I still find this really fun to play. To conclude here, it still has that Contra fun here, but only a few will get far in the game. Nonetheless, you'll love it!

Controls: A+
Well it's Contra...of course. The controls are tight as it has always been since the original, even with the Genesis controller. Because the controls are similar to Contra III, fans and/or players of the aforementioned game will find it easy to pick up and play. No flaw in the controls here, niche all around.

Sound: A
The music here is some of the best on the Genesis. It has that type of soundtrack that makes you pumped up to the extreme as you continue onwards onto the game. To make it short, it sounds amazing. Rock on, dude!

Replay Value: A-
It depends on the person you are. If you're a fan of Contra, want an actual challenge, or like to play difficult games in general (like me), this is totally recommended. If not any of those, move away from this game.

Overall: A
Contra: Hard Corps is a really amazing game on the Sega Genesis and one of the best in the series, no doubt. Despite the overwhelming difficulty may throw people off, it's one of those games you'll be attempting to beat it until you do, or play it multiple times after completion. Go dust off your Genesis and find your old copy (if you have it) or buy the game for at least $30 or play it on this site. Nintendo should really stop delaying the inevitable and release this on Virtual Console right now! I mean they did this with the earlier games in the series, why not this one? However, I do wonder how is the prequel Hard Corps: Uprising? Either way, this is worth your time and money.

P.S. Did you know that the Japanese version of Contra: Hard Corps actually featured a 3-health life bar, but it was removed in the overseas release. It may seem like a stab in the back, but personally, I think it fits more with the Contra formula with just one hit instead of a life bar, but only people who can't handle it will be praying to play the Japanese version.

Re: Contra: Hard Corps

Wow, I still have this game for my Sega Genesis (Along with a bunch of other games) I actually played it two months ago, and It's one of my favorite Sega games. It's a lot of fun, but its hard. There's a lot of enemies coming from all directions,I'm sure glad the ammo is unlimited otherwise I don't think I'd ever make it past the first level. (Wow, first boss was a total whimp:P)

I loved Contra: Hard Corps, it was my third Contra game after Contra and Super C.

Nice review.

I feel like playing this game again. I never finished it. I never really even made it too far, but I think I'll give it a good shot this time. Good thing I still have my Sega
