Burnout: Revenge

{Narrator}
'You're tuned to CRASH FM.

Welcome back to the World of Burnout. This time, everyone's out for REVENGE.
It's taken event organizers over a year to find the ultimate locations to fight and CRASH.
Competitors will be charging hard through those newly scouted routes.
You're gonna have to stay sharp, 'cause this time they feature alternates, short cuts, and BIG AIR opportunities.
We'll be going coast - to coast in North America, heading East from Angel Valley, then swinging by the technical backroads of Lone Peak, then the industrial landscapes of Motor City.
Make way for the super fast freeway at Sunshine Keys.

It's a Revenge World Tour, remember, so we get to rip it up right through the heart of Europe.
The dangerous curves of White Mountain, and make way for the cobbled streets of Eternal City.
Buckle up, people.

And of course, we get to go long haul, where the right side of the road is the WRONG side of the road.
Through the neon - filled night time eastern Bay, then tear it up through the urban hills of the awesome Central Route.
Without a doubt skills will be pushed to the max on the Revenge World Tour.
Now, for the first time in Burnout competiton, same - way traffic is there to be nailed - we call it CHECKING TRAFFIC.

It's not just the rules and events, all the rides are differnent, too. Gentlemen, start your engines.
New competitors have entered the Burnout circuit. Local talent will mix it up with the hottest burners from last year.
Check out the hot new GP ACTION, where the very best of the hometown racers duke it out with those from out of state.

Brand new to the racing action this year is the desructive CRASH BREAKER event; if you get taken out, DETONATE YOUR VEHICLE for explosive revenge.
Fresh for this year is the new ELIMINATOR format: don't get caught in last place when the timer gets to zero.

ROAD RAGE, the crowd favorite, is back and even better than before. We'll be pitting competitors up against rage rivals, with some surprises thrown in for good measure - you better be prepared.

One of a kind, custom designed Crash Courses for the ultimate in desruction. Drivers are going to have to BLOW IT UP HUGE to win these new events.
Survey the landscape, master the launch control, conquer the wind and power up your CRASH BREAKERS.
If you're lucky you'll take down the bonus target car in the devastation.
You gotta love it.

The newest competition on the World Circuit is a thrash through the traffic - filled streets: CHECK the traffic and get your revenge on RUSH HOUR.
And remember, the clock is ticking. Enough talk, time to DRIVE.

Keep it locked to CRASH FM.'

You are given the Revenge Rank of 'Harmless' at the beginning of the game, and as you work your way through the various destructive events your Revenge Rank increases.
Stars, which are awarded according to performance, dictate when you will reach the next Revenge Rank.
For example, to achieve the first rank above 'Harmless' {Unsafe}, 20 stars must be won, and the number of stars required increases with each Burnout Rank.

Events generally have target scores you must achieve in order to win a bronze, silver, or gold medal, depending on how many points you score in a given event.
Winning events unlocks new events and levels of the game, and new vehicles become available to you.
There are also Trophies awarded for achieving various random goals within events as well.
For example, if you check {crash into and send flying} 100 cars in the first event, you win a Special Trophy.

TRAFFIC ATTACK: here, your car is mostly impervious to damage, and you get points for hitting same - direction traffic, sending them skidding into other cars and crashing.

Bonus points are awarded for combination hits {where one car hits another, which in turn hits another car.}
Hitting cars into oncoming traffic on the other side of the road scores bonus points.
While hitting same - direction traffic is permitted, oncoming traffic, large trucks, buses, and cross traffic must be avoided or you will crash.

BURNING LAP: this is a time lap in which the same principles in traffic attack apply.
Here you notice checking cars earns BOOST.

RACE: again, the basic priciples apply here, but this time you're trying to use the cars you send flying to hit your opponents with.
Wiping them out earns points and BOOST, both of which help you to win the race.

Your BOOST can be increased by: wiping out your opponents, hitting your opponents from behind, grinding them against a wall, driving into oncoming traffic, and by getting BIG AIR by running over ramps.
Your primary concern should be winning the race, but your opponents are very aggressive and try to force you to wipe out, send cars flying your way, and generally try to get you and each other any way they can, even by pouncing on cars from above after a jump.

Getting taken down by an opponent makes them your 'New Rival', and huge bonus points are awarded if you catch up to them and take them down. IF you get taken down by an opponent it isn't necessarily the end; you can steer the smoldering carcass of your car into the path of your rivals on the road.

Sometimes you also are given the option of detonating your car to try to get revenge.
Crashing and getting taken down loses BOOST.
There are also special target locations in each race to try to take down your opponents into which award extra points if achieved.

RACE GP's: tournaments of three or more races.

CRASH: a tribute to Burnout roots, but with a 'Crash TV' flavor.
In this event, basic principles and controls do not apply; instead of pressing the usual gas button to make the car move, you must use a power meter {very similar to those found in bowling or golf games} which dictates how fast your car will go, and if you get it 'just right', you get a speed boost to start your run; if you get it wrong you could stall or blow up your car.

Once you get your car moving you try to hit a ramp to gain distance in order to destroy as many vehicles as possible, and the special 'target' vehicle if you can for extra points.
While airborne you can fine tune your trajectory, and once crashed and settled you can use CRASH BREAKER to detonate your car in order to cause even further destruction, and this often helps in getting the 'target' vehicle.

Different vehicles have different weights and your choice of vehicle is important: lighter vehicles are fast but tend to get blown around by the wind. Larger vehicles aren't affected by wind so much but their range is limited due to their weight.
It's hard to get a fire truck to fly very far, for example.

Once the timer runs out and all vehicles have finished crashing, the estimated dollar value is displayed above each crashed vehicle, and this counts towards your score as well {like in the original games}.
I always find myself laughing during the CRASH events because the soundtrack for this part of the game has an audience cheering and applauding while you explode and a massive pileup of cars forms on the road.
As more cars hit the pileup, the audience cheers, claps, and whistles again.

ROAD RAGE: this event is about eliminating your competition by taking a target number of them down within a certain time limit.
You have to take down a target number of opponents in order to be awarded extra time, and then you receive a new target number of take downs to gain each successive time limit.

The physics of this game are what I would call 'whimsical', and for example, in RACE, TRAFFIC ATTACK, and BURNING LAP events when you check cars, they go sliding ahead of you as if on black ice or as if they were on a shuffleboard.
Cars and trucks fly through the air only mildly restrained by gravity.
Your car has the opposite feeling, as though the tires and road were made of complimentary sides of velcro.
Cornering is almost always perfect, and you rarely if ever break traction and slide except on the very tightest corners at very high speed {using BOOST}.

Coupling of your car to the environment is good but it seems somehow superimposed.
Other than that I should say if real world physics were incorporated into this game the gameplay simply would not work; real world physics don't allow you to shoot cars into each other like balls on a billiard table - and that's all.

The sound effects are also somewhat 'whimsical', and remind me of the sound effects they use on TV 'news' reports; big, rushing sounds are used when the scores are being tallied at the end of events, and during gameplay you'd swear you were watching a movie with elements like wildcat screams being mixed into the car crashes and such - straight out of Hollywood and just as flashy and showy - which fits this game perfectly.
As usual, the music for the game is typical radio fare.

Cars in this game aren't referred to by their proper names but are easily identifiable, and since this game is so far removed from reality by its nature I think it fits quite well to refer to cars as 'Custom R185 DX', 'Modified M - type ST', 'Factory R160 ST' and similar names.
Also I should mention that like the early Burnout games, cars are unlocked according to your performance and score as opposed to being bought with money won while racing, as in other games.
The selection of cars is very good and some are downright amazing.

GRAPHICS: - 5 for graphics but I have some comments about its appearance.
The cars {yours and your opponents} look as though they are made of plastic as their sheen almost exceeds the detail on the cars.
This is only an observation, and these graphics are typical for the Burnout games: very crisp and sharp but SO SHINY.

The environment is well rendered and somewhat authentic to given location with lots of detail but somehow also has a 'model' - like appearance, like the miniatures found in model train sets.
This is also typical of the Burnout games.

The camera is extremely fish - eyed and sometimes this can be confusing when trying to decide when to start turning, but it also adds to the overall sense of speed in the game of which there is LOTS.
While racing the environment becomes very blurry as you race past it and this makes your speed seem much greater than it actually is - a very well done and fun effect, perfectly suited to this game.

SOUND: - 4. Great sound effects in this game but I find that they are a bit Hollywood.
The sound of the cars' engines sound authentic but there is no sense in arguing realism due to this game's lack of realism in other regards - it's just for fun and everything about it seems to be, too.

REPLAY VALUE:
- 4, because while it's a fun game it's so 'over the top' that its flashiness gets old.
Put it on the shelf for a while, but come back to it later.

CHALLENGE: - 5. This is no easy game, and while at first you make progress quickly and unlock many new levels, soon the difficulty becomes a lot greater.
This is another game that I have yet to beat and I think that most people would find it quite challenging.

TILT: - I'm feeling 4 because while it has great and unusual gameplay, its unreality and the fish eye camera make it one to take lots of, but in smaller doses.
Still, it's a really fun game that I recommend owning.

Re: Burnout: Revenge

You sure seem to like racing games, specifically street racing games. A solid review too, though I'm not going to play this game despite how favorable this review is.

I know, that's why I'm not getting this one, so I can get the other.
