Toon Shooter: Rise of the Fleet

I would like to like to point out the very best Flash shooter I've ever played. It's Co-op Toon Shooter: Rise of the Fleet. Knowing side-scrolling shooters (both Contra and Gradius styles) it comes to no surprise. In fact the creator of Co-op Toon Shooter, a man from Moof Games, has beaten U.N. Squadron on the notoriously difficult Gamer mode. I too have beaten Gamer mode and I must attest it's the most difficult feat I've had in my life.

U.N. Squadron is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of inspiration. Here's just six out of hundreds of references I've found in Co-op Toon Shooter: Rise of the fleet.

1) Otis, the first flying character, is heavily based on the air-to-ground fighter in Carrier Air Wing.

2) Level 3 is a mash-up of two levels in U.N. Squadron with a couple of twists.

3) Ben is the Bill Rizer of this game; he's got spread shot!

4) The "Pride" is another reference to U.N. Squadron, but it behaves differently when you fight it.

5) Neil has a permanent "Shield."

6) While you're at it, shout "DOUBLE!" That's Engelburt in a nutshell.

Lastly, to mark the difficulty of the game, I present to you a famous line...

"It takes a madman to take on this mission... Lucky they found me!" -U.N. Squadron
