Doom 3 Playthrough

Figured this game was worth documenting.

First off, this is my first time playing the game... sorta. Played a little bit of it when I first bought it two years ago, but not since for whatever reason. Forgot I had it until I saw them re-release it in stores as a "BFG Edition" that looked kind of interesting, but all it was when I looked it up was all 3 games, updated graphics, and the duct tape mod. Meh, I payed 7 bucks for it in good condition on Xbox original, and I have Doom 1 & 2 on XBLA. Pass on that, although good on them to release it like that.

I don't know why it took me two years to get to this just now, but I'm glad I am playing it finally. I never really did get past the first area or two last time I played it, and even with that it was all new to me pretty much.

I've been doing my best to make a good atmosphere while playing this game, dark room, volume cranked, all that good stuff. The game has done it's job, it's certainly got a tremendous atmosphere in itself. That's a plus, it takes a lot to scare me in a game, and this hasn't so much scared me as it has creeped me out a bit. Not to mention it's probably made me jump a dozen times. One time in particular was quite bad. I check every creek and crevice in this game for ammo all the time, since I like to horde it. I came up to one area where it was just a narrow divet with some ammo, and armour, so I go in there, and it's dark, suddenly a small door opens in front of me really quick and an imp jumps right out at my face! That was quite the scare! I enjoy it when games can actually do that to me.

The game does a very good job of creating atmosphere like I said, the cold empty warehouse like sound constantly is enough in itself, and the darkness just adds to it. Now here is something I'm sure everyone is waiting for me to mention, right? The Flashlight. Now, I get how it's logically flawed, hence the "Duct tape mod" that's oh so famous. Honestly, I don't find too much problem with it, I see what they were going for anyways, flashlight or weapon, not both. On the one hand, you want to have your flashlight out to see the monsters, on the other hand, you can't defend yourself with the flashlight if you do see the monsters. I'm actually going to say it's a fun concept that adds to the game. Would I rather have a flashlight on my gun? Probably, but I'm fine without it thus far.

In regards to handicapping the game without some duct tape mod, I really don't see it necessary thus far, not that I could simply on xbox. The only time I really find myself having to switch between a lot is in a pitch black area with a default zombie in it, I came across a few of these, but whatever. As for the imps in the dark, well they just give themselves away with their fireballs. Bam! Dead! I like fighting them in the dark, it's scarier, and more of a challenge.

One more thing I have to comment on this game, the challenge. Thank god I chose Normal difficulty, because if I chose easy, it would be too... well... easy. Normal is too easy right now frankly, I'm hoping this is just a difficulty ramp, but I find myself hovering about 90 health all the time, and passing on many health kits due to full health. While it may be a new 3d rendition, to it's basic gameplay, it's still doom with a few tweaks. All the same strategies work for the most part. You can dodge fireballs pretty easily, and just move a lot, or take cover for the zombies with guns.

It may sound like I have a negative take on this game, but far from it. It seemed kind of 'just ok' my first session with it yesterday, but it's been getting better and better today. Difficulty has ramped up a bit, one part threw 3 imps at me which provided a good challenge compared to the usual one imp. The introductory of the pinkies was crazy. They threw you in a locked confined space while this giant beast of a monster tries to break into the room you are in, that part was fantastic, and I didn't know what to expect, while it may be core doom gameplay, the enemies act different, and I hadn't seen this one yet in doom 3. I had my machine gun out, and when it finally broke in, I just unloaded on it. I really did feel trapped in that room, and that was a nice touch.

The imps have been improved vastly. I love how quick they can be in this game, and how they can drop to all fours to throw you off. Like I have said, fighting these in the dark, is especially awesome.

I'm noticing the usual transition from Space station to Alienic that the Doom games usually offer. One room in particular was crazy. One room is suddenly infested with some sort of life-form just attached all over, and there is one of those demonic symbols on the ground (pentagram?). Once entering this room it gets dark with a red tint, and you hear a bunch of evil cackling. Very spooky, suddenly several imps start layering into the room after you. Very cool moment. Still stayed above 80 health I believe though.

I like how in this version, you actually occasionally come across other survivors, and are ultimately so far trying to meet up with a group of them so far (until something goes wrong I'm assuming). The story leaves you guessing and it's very nice. The PDA system is cool too to read documents on people hating the UAC or getting suspicious of what's going on, it gives you some insight, and is just interesting to read sometimes.

The final moment I encountered on my second session today before I made myself call it quits was a new enemy introduction that I don't believe was in previous games (also, not saying this is a remake if anyone is confused on that from earlier). I don't even know what to call them. You come into a room where there's a butchered man stuck to the rood just hoarsely moaning when he sees you. A cutscene shows a few of these two-headed speedy demons coming into the room. Of course when you get back to gameplay, there is more than just 3 of these things, there is like 8. They had me backed into a corner and got a few bites on me, but I still killed them all. That's where I left off though, so more to come from here on in. Let's hope I can finish this game. Attention span, be good for once.

Re: Doom 3 Playthrough

Keep in mind that this game released eight years ago. So all of the games you played that have released after will have an impact on your review. I still think this is a great game that dead space took a lot of ideas from.

Re: Doom 3 Playthrough

I don't step much out of the 1990-2005 era of games. New games don't do it for me. Closest I can possibly relate this to is Left 4 Dead and Amnesia, and that's a stretch.

Dead Space took most of its ideas from the Paul W.S Anderson flick, "EVENT HORIZON". Not to say it didn't maybe borrow a few elements from D3, but for the most part, EH = DS.

It's a direct lift of everything in Event Horizon, lol. To each their own, though. It relies more on cheap horror flick scares (walking down a corridor, AH! a monster jumps out of the vent) than actually building up a frightening atmosphere like Resident Evil 2 or Silent Hill 2.

Of course, all in my humble opinion.
