Controller support for old DOS games?

I bought Descent on the steam summer sale. Honestly forgot about the game, but it's the first computer game we ever had. Basically Doom in a plane. Fun little game. Got kicked pretty good on level 1, but the control schemes don't help. Obviously the wonders of dual control sticks and such didn't come to be back then, but the game (running through dosbox) detects my ps3 controller, but won't detect the control sticks properly or l2/r2.

I've been trying to program it to keyboard since there's no keyboard + mouse option either, just one or the other. Something along the line of using WASD and Num4568 with space to shoot, > to alt shoot, V to bomb, ^ to flare and Num+, NumEnter to raise lower. Not the best, but doable and probably usable if we can't figure anything out.

I've had the same problem with Final Doom in the past having weird control configs. Both run on Dosbox through steam.

Old Dos games? Does that mean there's new Dos games too?

Re: Controller support for old DOS games?

Lol. Technically, the ones made near the tail end of the dos era could be defined as new. I'm just looking for how to work around dosbox, also being that I can't control dosbox, steam just launches the game via dosbox.

Re: Controller support for old DOS games?

I know for doom there is a file you can go change manually outside the game to rebind the controls.

You have to go looking for the files in the steam folder and find the config file if I recall.
