Command & Conquer/Red Alert Series

I felt this was enough for me to make a thread, and hopefully I can discuss with some others, because it's fun to discuss the games I'm into. This may serve as more of a blog on it for me, but please feel free to comment, if nothing else to let me know it's interesting.

I recently bought the Command & Conquer 17-game bundle off origin. It's a nice trip of nostalgia, but also really fun.

I find it increasingly difficult to invest into games these days, unless I'm finding them superb and worth my time. This is working thus far. Holds up today I feel. I have more history with Red Alert 1, and it's expansion, but there's some scattered history of renting Command & Conquer on the N64, as well as owning it on the Sega Saturn for a time, which was a pretty spot on port as I recall, minus the Game codes opposed to saves.

Played Red Alert 3 on 360 a number of years back, but I don't remember being a fan. Get absolutely destroyed every time, and controller UI is increasingly difficult to make work with RTS' as they advance.

So far, just playing through the first C&C anywho, GDI missions (I got deep into NOD on Saturn as I recall). Really good ease into the formula I feel. I was getting absolutely destroyed on Mission 7 though, so I need to learn to utilize everything at my disposal more. I used to make massive armies of soldiers in Red alert opposed to tanks because it seemed more worth the money, yet clearly, it isn't working here. I also had a habit of making almost impenetrable walls out of turrets instead of sandbags in red alert, and playing a defend game. Those aren't at my disposal yet at least, and I want to get through the missions faster, so it's a flip of mindsets that are ingrained in me.

In terms of Red Alert, I love the over the top story and mechanics. I'm more acquainted with that game. I think we still have a very destroyed soviet disc and somewhat functional aftermath disc somewhere, but no need. Regarding story though, just all I remember was time machine, kill hitler, different future. Bam! Love it. Going to try and power through C&C first anyways.

I'll be honest. I don't know if I'll advance into the sequels of these games as it sounds like they get worse as you go with the EA takeover. Watched a very in depth documentary of the series last night. It's a good 5-part watch if you have time:

Re: Command & Conquer/Red Alert Series

I used to watch my dad play one of the early games on the computer when I was a boy. Too bad about the EA buyout.

Yeah, looks like one of the best examples of EA absolutely just wrecking something that didn't need to be. Shrewd businessmen they are :-/

I beat mission 7 in the Czech Republic. Employed a bit of cheap tactics I found online. Housing 2 engineers in an apc, just rush into the base until the APC blows up, tell the engineers to take over the main base and something else if they both survive. Well they did, so I took over the main base making it so the enemy couldn't construct anymore buildings, and then I took over their refinery cutting off their cash source (by selling the buildings when I capture them, I also gain funds). I built up my army again, then did another run with the APC-Engineer taking over their Hand of nod (barracks) cutting off their supply of soldiers. Everything ran smoothly from there.

My god this game is hard though. Mission 8, in slovakia is maybe easy? I don't know, it's the classic protection mission I hate in games. Defend a village and apparently a specific scientist, which you'd have know way of knowing which one he is. Okay, fair enough, my base is set up beside it, and I just gotta cover my base and the village entrance off to the top left. Easy enough. The game handed me enough tanks and soldiers to start in this one. I got far enough to again employ my tactic with the APC and the engineers, not finding a main base this time, I just took over the refinery. Whilst doing this I did a gigantic attack on their base hoping to thin the numbers and distract them from the APC. It worked. I began to build up my army to defend against their retaliation and then bam "Mission failed" out of nowhere.

I'll admit I've been using saves as somewhat of a save state sort of deal, or more so checkpoints. Hey man, I'm having fun and it's not always appealing to repeat entire missions that take up to an hour at this point. Anyways, unfortunately, I saved just before some villagers died out of the blue, so I'm S.O.L. there. I'll try again later. It looks like the villagers are killing themselves though, because as I found out, enough walking on Tiberium in this will poison and kill people. At least as far as the games mechanics go, as well as the story has stated it's poisoning the people of Slovakia here. This is not something that I'm used to from Red Alert, but okay seriously? If the villagers are dumb enough to kill themselves then man oh man this is a serious problem. The other possibility is some sort of airstrike. The enemy has enough helicopters flying around, yet they seem rather dormant. One was just chilling next to a bunch of my tanks and soldiers (obviously being defended by me), but there was no attacking it, and it wasn't doing anything. Any soldiers it may have dropped off, would have had bullets rained down on them. So I don't know. I'll have to check google on this mission. If the villagers are killing themselves, it's probably not a flaw worth trying to get around.

Edit: What I found online:

Quote:
This is definitely the hardest mission in the game up to this point. The civilians in the lower-left part of the map must survive - if too many of them get killed, you'll fail. The primary threats will be Chinooks dumping troops above the town and to the right of it, and even worse, the civilians tend to wander into the Tiberium and fry themselves.
This was a left or right choice mission I could have picked, and I chose poorly.

Looks like I'll have to build closer to the village slightly, and sandbag off the Tiberium field from the villagers, get a second harvester, and do a long grueling mission.
