Civilization question....

I've played Civs in the past so I'm not completely new to the series. I have a nagging question to ask though. I've been to Civfanatics.com or w/e it's called and I didn't see what I was looking for.

My question is about city borders. I know when you open the city screen the part you can place people on (specialists ect) is what effects the city directly. But what about the rest of the squares inside the cultural borders? Unless I'm wrong you can get resources from stuff outside the main cross shaped part. For example, if you have coal 3-4 spaces from the city you can build a mine and get it. But what about just normal stuff like farms ect? Can I get gold/food/hammers(shields w/e) from squares 3+ spaces away from city?

I used to build cities very spaced out to maximize the area it gets but if I can't use those squares I'm just wasting time. I was afraid to build too close because I didn't wanna choke off my cities.
I haven't played any Civ besides this in awhile so I forget if they use this same system. I'm using Warlords atm.
Any info about this is very much appreciated.

Re: Civilization question....

I played Civ 2 last year. My memory of it is not perfect but I think the answer to your question is yes. When you go to the city screen you can move your labors around anywhere within your borders. Where you put them affects your city resources. If you put them on a haystack then you get food. If you put them on a gold mine then you get money. If you irrigate the haystack or dig a mine on the gold square then they will be more effective. Also I think building roads to the resources from the city improves performance.

Maybe it's not the same system between the two versions. In Civ4 Warlords when you go to the city screen you have about 16 squares to build on, but as the city grows your cultural borders go out beyond that cross shaped section. The max amount of workable squares on the city screen doesn't go past @16 squares but the cultural borders expands hugely. My question is about the squares beyond the city screen. I swear when I mine/farm/ect in the beyond I get the resource(iron/coal/wheat/ect). But I don't notice any effect from basic worker improvements. I wish I had the manual but I don't

Yeah I know about all the other stuff, irrigate/road the resource ect. I'm just looking for more advanced info.[br]Posted on: December 27, 2007, 10:24:33 PM_________________________________________________B umping this thread rather than make a new one. There's more activity nowdays so maybe some of you newer people have more info about Civ. If it's hard to understand my questions I can take a screenshot of my game to try and make it clearer.

Re: Civilization question....

if i am not mistaken your answer is no you dont get any extra shields from outside your border you can get the resorce and share it with all your citys no matter how far as long as they are connected with a road or harbor but you only get shields for what is inside your boarder...

lets say you need horses and they are 6 moves away from your city you can move a worker to the horses then farm them and then build a road to connect your city and now you have horses but you get no bonus for having them inside your boarders

on a side not eveytime i play this game i like to force myself on a island so i dont get attacked for atleast half the game

Re: Civilization question....

I'm just kinda confused about the team color cultural border thing. As the citys culture goes up the borders expand. Once the city gets huge the border is very large. I guess I just wanna know what the point of it is. I assume it's just influence and allows you to access distant resources. Either way I do well when I play it so I must be doing it right.

Oasis, auto workers isn't bad to do. Just make sure you have options set(if you want them). Stuff like "Workers won't destroy old improvements and workers won't chop down trees" that way you can control that kind of thing.
And I agree with you about the island thing, it helps alot since some computer AIs like to be aggresive early and it can stunt your growth badly if you get an early war you're not ready for.

MJ23, Yeah I'm waiting to get a new version of civ, I got Wii games to buy and other expenses first. Right now I have Civ4 Warlords, I need the newest expansion still. Once the new game comes out(Spore) I probably won't play much else for awhile.

Re: Civilization question....

Cultural win is probably the easiest way to win. Just build all the buildings that give culture bonuses, raise the culture % and don't die. Oh and keep people happy all the time.
