10 Reasons to Try out Romancing SaGa 3

Romancing SaGa 3 - Super Nintendo

Brace yourselves. Comparisons of this game to FFVI are coming.

1. The environments are big. How big? Really big. Your character is just about the size of the top most door on this image, and this tower is a relatively small (and optional, for most characters) section of the game. Beautiful art work is also present and makes the game a 16 bit wonder to behold.

2. Variety! There are eight different main characters to play as, each with different opportunities to take on different tasks. There's a lot of ways to go about each side quest and, intentional or not, you're likely to receive a few different results if you play through the game more than once.

3. Characters are generally versatile, and can be grown to fit your needs. Each character can learn one type of magic (water, fire, sun, earth, etc) and can level up proficiency for different weapons. Besides that, characters also learn techniques for the various weapon types, which can generate large differences even between two very similar characters. Did I mention that there are 30 of them?

4. The Combat system is as intricate as you want it to be; you can either have standard formations of your party (like in Final Fantasy, but with no row system) or complex formations such as one that gives your middle member better shooting accuracy and exterior members upgraded defense. Some formations even involve your party working autonomously and with chances of doing special moves together.

5. The game is open world enough to the point where it's a mix between a Square RPG and a Bethesda RPG. You can tackle various things in any order you feel like, but some enemies will grow as you do to ensure that there's at least some challenge. You also don't have to commit to quests you don't want to do and you can shoot straight for the main priorities if you like.

6. Apart from some of the early stages of the game, there is very little to directly guide a player through the journey, and many things have to be discovered for yourself. For this reason, I think this game will very much appeal to people who dislike having a story spoon fed to them, and will prove more engaging than the typical "Go do this because the main characters say it's a good idea" premise that precedes some of Square's other RPGs.

7. A really, really badass soundtrack.

8. Boss fights that get dynamic on a level like this:

9. Fluent animation and grand sprite work create wondrous cut scenes and effects.

10. The game is dark. Very dark, compared to what else you might see from Squaresoft. If you ever wanted a jRPG outside Shin Megami Tensei where the monsters are monsters and actually find ways to disturb you by means of the plot, here it is.

Now go play it.

Are you saying this was a trap and we shouldn't really be playing this game?

Re: 10 Reasons to Try out Romancing SaGa 3

Okay so it isn't any where like Fire Emblem .Even though the Fire Emblem series is the most talked about strategy game of all time.I might get into it but shouldn't I start out from the 1st one before moving forward to the sequel? Is it set out in a different world then the 1st 2?

You do not need to play the first two games. This one takes place about a hundred years later and is not deeply connected other than a few reoccurring themes.

I don't quite recall saying that it was like Fire Emblem, but if I did, it was probably because of the vast amount of characters and the possibility that you can lose some of them permanently through death.
